Running Out Of Patience! Need Builders!

Recommended Posts

Several months ago, our builder did a runner leaving us with a lot to do to finish up the place. We are having a devils time finding anyone to do work. In my experience you check the phone book, ring around, find some leads, get a few quotes and off you go. Now this seems NOT the way here. What is the way? Please help if you know how to get the workers.

Ah, straight West if the "Sam Phran" transliteration is accurate to Thai. FLood repair work straight North of you is likely pulling all the talent, using the word loosely. Sorry, can't help. Anybody else out that way help this man out?

I know a Guy who works in and around Bangkok, I have used him many times and have not had a problem with his work.

His name is " Mun " he doesn't speak much English, maybe give him a try, sorry I cannot help more.

I'll put Telephone number in a PM to you, don't know whether you are allowed to post here.

I'm pretty certain you can post the number but can you please send it to me also? I have some smaller redesign jobs that need tending to.

In my case I have several mid sized jobs but won't do them all at once and doing more is based on cost and quality of previous jobs done...

Well, if you want to call them and discuss it you can, then up to them and you.

I recommend them cos they built a house for me and did an outstanding job.....but another guy I know had difficulty with them, not even getting started, but I think the job may have been to small perhaps, especially if they were busy elsewhere and had to pull workers away to do small stuff.

You need to speak Thai with them, although her english is not to bad, it is not great.

Good luck, I have yet to meet anyone, myself included, that has not had a Thai builder do a runner on them. Sometimes it is early in the process , sometimes later on. Even with a signed contract you are screwed since any lawyer is going to want a minimum of 10,000 THB to even talk to you and then getting any money out of builder is like getting blood out of the proverbial stone

As far as getting anyone it is not like in the western world where you can go to the phone book and find them. As my TG tells me, everything here is done mouth to mouth (word of mouth)

To add to your problems is the fact that any new builder will be reluctant to get involved in any semi completed project since they don't know what they will be getting into so are afraid to give an estimate. I had an electrician tell me that he went to one job to finish it up, only to find that all the wires in the electrical receptacles only extend about a foot and were not interconnected. Another words, the first electrician took the money for wiring the house but only placed wires where they could be seen by the owner

That is unbelievable....but totally believable.....

I could tell some stories..

So could I tell some, funny ones too but going through the labour force available gets you to know who is good and who not.

Thank you all for your help. I did a flyer up and ran it round to all the local hardware stores (I have been frequenting them so no Farang shock) and it turned up a few for quotes at least. We will see how these all pan out, well the 2 that say they can do the jobs. Thanks again

if its any consolation, you'll get the same 'runner' stories in the West too - blindly picking a contractor out of the phone book is a serious crap-shoot as well. A good 'black book' of good contractors, subs & suppliers is one of the values of hiring true professionals.

Good luck as it is extremely difficult finding any experienced workers at present as they all seem to be fixing there own upcountry properties or others. Our contractor in Bangkok (50 years experience) has never had such issues finding workers before. As the government money now seems to be starting to flow suspect things will not be improving anytime soon.

I got a very reasonable builder (one of the last nice guys?) and his small team finished off a greater proportion of the work (at least I have a bathroom now!). Just now small 'tidy' stuff to do. Thanks all for the help.
