Holiday In Sri Lanka

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Been thinking about taking family on a 4-7 day holidays to Sri Lanka. Since we are Buddhist I think It would be a great trip to see all the fascinating temples and other sites Sri Lanka has to offer. However, safety is always an issue especially traveling with women and elderly in family. Has anyone been there recently to give valid advice?

So here are my questions to all of you:

1) any trusted tour operators recommended? ****MOST IMPORTANT***

2) approx cost per each adult?

3) is the country safe to travel?

4) any particular site(s) you enjoyed most or hate?

Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

I think this might be better over in the SE Asia sub forum. I'll move this topic over there.

Hi,

I don't know how much it would help. Anyway, I had been to Sri Lanka twice. Did not stay long in Colombo. My friend engaged me a driver to drive me to Nuwara Eliya, located at an altitude of 2000m above. Nice weather and nice scenery of the tea plantation. I was brought to some "touristy" places of interest along the way, including the spice garden, which IMO interesting, but expensive.

I won't recommend my driver (sorry to disappoint), as he was driving a old car with stiff hard suspension and smelly car cushion.

Unfortunately, I did not get to visit any Buddhist temple.

Hotel stay in Colombo was considered rather expensive for me.

Sri Lanka rupees is really volatile. Try to change what you need. If not, keep some USD in hand.

Most of the people speaks English. I do not have any nasty encounter, but it's always good to be cautious, regardless of where you are.

Hi,

Please find below my suggestions to your questions.

1) any trusted tour operators recommended? ****MOST IMPORTANT***

These are a few of the 'top' tour operators - could be expensive, but very reliable.

I suggest you contact them direct and ask for a quotation.

I went many years ago, and will never go again. Too many con men for my liking.

Third world country. Just can't get away from it. It's all about survival i guess.

Thanks though.

appreciate your advise; especially the non-reccomendation of the driver. :)

Thailand is just as "3rd world" and the con men aren't anywhere near as bad.

I regretted everyday I was there that I hadn't gone to Thailand instead.

Please do limit your travels to only the 1st world countries. Your most valuable life would be 100% safe, happy, contended and without any regrets.

You must have missed the bit where I said I wished I had gone to THAILAND instead.

As for so called first world countries, I'm in Thailand to get away from them!

No, I did not miss that!

"Thailand is just as "3rd world" and the con men aren't anywhere near as bad"

Even TH is not up to your high standards! and you say - As for so called first world countries, I'm in Thailand to get away from them!

Ohhh dear! This whole world is not up to your 'standard' - what ever they are!

Guess you will be miserable where ever you are on this planet, right through out your life.

Any way, now we are out of topic from the OP.
