July 1, 201213 yr Hi there I have seen a 2nd hand Highlander for sale that I like. The problem is I am not too knowledgable when it comes to cars and I was hoping if any of you out there could tell me if I am paying a fair price or not? Its a black 3.0 Litre Automatic Turbo Diesel D Max Highlander. 20,000 Kilometers on the clock and registered from Febuary 2011. I forget the 'edition' (by that I mean Platinum, Silver etc) but I can say its the one with the red Isuzu logo and the grey sporty stripe down the front of the bonnet/hood. Interior is black and red leather. Extras include the sport kid, bug visa on the front of the hood, window visa's, tinted windows, nice black aloy wheels and a DVD player/Bluetooth/Sat Nav etc. The dealer wants 855,000 for it. I tried to get him down as much as I could but he wouldnt go a penny under 850,000 lol. And im paying cash! Any advice would be appreciated as I have no idea the worth of this truck. All I can say is that I was looking at the "new" top of the range Highlander which has all the same features and works out to around 1,000,000 by the time you have put the sports kit etc on. Im thinking for 150,000 more I could have a new one. But then again I have to get in line and I am hearing some bad stories about lead times on new trucks right now. Again, any advice on the price massivley appreciated! Thanks heaps TKO
July 2, 201213 yr I was with my dealership at an event this last weekend. It depends what model and colour you want. About 2 months for some and 3 months for say pearl white V Cross. Let me know what you want and colour and I'll ask tomorrow when I'm there. They have been vert honest with me.
July 2, 201213 yr One million for new vs 850k for 1.5 years old with 20k on the clock, sounds about right to me, all other factors being equal.
July 2, 201213 yr If you can wait go and buy a new and you have a full warranty and a brand new truck off course. Thai used cars are notoriously know for that the odometers have been tampered with so ask the dealer if a full service history can be obtained from Isuzu. I did that when I bought a 3 year old Honda City and we took the car to a Honda dealer and they printed out the service history which convinced me that the odometer reading was correct and I bought the car after a Thai friend that knows a bit about cars checked it for damages and general condition of the car. Be very very careful when buying a second hand car in Thailand bring as minimum a person that knows cars and what to look for. Some cars have even been welded up after a massive accident and the chassis become askew and it will never be the same again. I have a new Ranger on order and don't know when I will get it, but my trusted City 06 will do until then. I say again: Buy new if you can wait, call or visit the dealers often and you might get lucky as some orders are cansled in last moment and a guy with cash money will get it.
July 2, 201213 yr I agree somewhat with the previous poster but I think the risk of a bad buy is reduced when buying from a large reputable dealer and when buying a newer vehicle - note, I said reduced not eliminated, before somebody takes me to task! As long as there is a sizeable chunk of warantee left on the used vehicle purchase the associated risk should be minimal.
July 2, 201213 yr One million for new vs 850k for 1.5 years old with 20k on the clock, sounds about right to me, .... Sounds insane to me, but this is Thailand of course. I looked at used vehicles and they all seemed completely over the top price-wise. I even saw one used vehicle that was being advertised at the same price as a new one! You have to bear in mind that not only might the used vehicle have been badly driven, overloaded, abused, badly maintained, flooded, damaged and repaired etc. etc. etc. but also the new one will come with extras like free insurance and will have the extra warranty. You may also be able to negotiate a discount on the list price for a new one, making the price difference between new and used even smaller. To me it's a no-brainer; in Thailand go new every time unless perhaps it's your grandmother who is selling you her used car.

The caveat to my post of course is that the Thai market is what it is, so when I suggest that the price is about right, it's within that context.
July 2, 201213 yr The caveat to my post of course is that the Thai market is what it is, so when I suggest that the price is about right, it's within that context. I agree with that, used car prices here is extremely high, but then again good for the seller (you & me) when the time comes to sell the car and buy a new one.
July 2, 201213 yr Funny you are asking about something very close to what I just bought last month 2010 Isuzu Dmax Super Platinum Highlander 4 door, 3.0 VGS turbo, Automatic tan leather interior, full options on the NAV etc...Rear View camera etc 30k on the odometer all services up to date, no insurance claims came with taxes & full insurance paid till mid next year Dealer was asking 780k I got it for 750k cash He took care of all transfer work & costs. Blue book in my name Only one previous German owner who obviously never used it as a truck as the bed is flawless as is the truck itself So given all of that I personally would guess your price is close considering yours is a 2011 & slightly less miles on the odo Hard to wrap our heads around prices here as we all usually come from a western country with much better/lower prices. But I did research a lot & compared prices everywhere...Bangkok etc. Lastly I did buy in Chiang Mai Hope this helps & good luck PS: These are really nice riding/driving trucks. I have always had a truck in the US & this one ranks well IMHO
July 2, 201213 yr Sounds more like the price for a LS than a highlander IMO. So no, would not buy it for that price but prefer to buy it new.
July 2, 201213 yr Author Thanks everyone for your feedback.... Thats realy helped me out and I appreciate it. Im still leaning towards the 2nd hand Isuzu but now i have a new worry: the fact that many dealers out here sell cars that have had major issues previously and dont declare them. Thinking about it, the dealer is quite small (around 30 cars) and the truck only comes with a 3 month warranty. Its a good point.... How do I know the truck was not totaly damaged during the floods? Well, I dont I guess but the point is if a buy new I know for certain it has no previous issues. Hmm. Not sure what to do....

I'm not sure your last phrase is true, as I recall it was only Honda who made a point of destroying their flood damaged inventory publically, the others, well, I'll leave it up to you to guess but I'd be willing to bet there's a few "new" but previously wet vehicles in the hands of unsuspecting owners.

Actually that your interested in truck will still be under factory warranty as is mine. I just took mine in for a early 40k Kilometer service & it was free except materials...oil...filters etc. Isuzu has a 100k Kilometer or 3 years warranty which ever comes first. The warranty transfers to new owners if it is not expired As to how you know if the truck had any major repairs the insurance claims are available for you to check...afaik Yes you can buy new & that is what I had planned to do. But we had sold our car previously & all trucks I checked were a min of 5 month wait. I did not fancy renting at 15k THB per month for that long. Good Luck

July 2, 201213 yr My new top model 3L, Auto, pearl white Highlander was 922K, I got it in less than a month and I love it. I did have to spend another 15K for film, but I got the film I wanted, not what someone else wanted. Most everything about the 2012 is nicer than my 2009, which was the top of the line as well. It is more comfortable, the nav system is great, the backup cameral is much better, it has somewhat more power, it’s quieter and has a bigger fuel tank. Also, the 2012 gets 21% better fuel economy than the 2009, so with the bigger tank and better economy, I can go 900km on a tank rather than just 600. Oh, and the alloys don’t get scared up because they don’t stick out further than the tire sidewall, are you married? I don’t know how much you drive, but just the better fuel economy will save me about THB30K a year, not a lot, but not insignificant. Add that to a 100K bumper to bumper warranty, the fact that it will still look late-model in five years and I think it’s an easy decision.

I got the V-Cross ... and had Lamina L75 film fitted. Fuel economy is very good, keep to 80kms and you will get 18-19kpl ... you will still get 13-14kpl at 100kph. It's a pity that it doesn't have a higher top gear
July 3, 201213 yr Pay a bit extra for a new one. If he bought a new one and it is his first vehicle bought in Thailand wouldn't he be able to get the rebate.
July 3, 201213 yr Pay a bit extra for a new one. If he bought a new one and it is his first vehicle bought in Thailand wouldn't he be able to get the rebate. Dont think so... That rebate is for 1st time car owners ( as in 1st car ever owned ) , car cannot be transferred/sold for 5 years & the car has to be an efficient car limited to 1.5 liter ..I think or something like that anyway

It's a pity that it doesn't have a higher top gear I have to say that even the 2010 Hilander 3.0 vgs turbo I have has really surprised me with its fuel economy On a recent 483k trip I noted I averaged 96 kph on 30 liters so roughly 16kpl? Much better than my V8 Dodge guzzler in the USA
July 3, 201213 yr Pay a bit extra for a new one. If he bought a new one and it is his first vehicle bought in Thailand wouldn't he be able to get the rebate. Truck isn't on the rebate list, if l remember correctly. Funny !!! Well TIT I guess the guy working in the local government said he just got back 84,000 rebate on his Ford Hi-Rider truck. The wife's nephew said his getting back 80,000 or so rebate on the Vigo prerunner he bought.

July 3, 201213 yr Doesn't the rebates only apply to Thai nationals? Yes, it does. First time buyers, Thai nationals.

Considering that a new one with all the extras that you mentioned costs 922k, i know this is true as a mate has just bought one 2 weeks ago ( waited 3 months for delivery) 850k for the one you mentioned is a little too high in price, more like 800k would be fair.
July 3, 201213 yr Author Thanks again everyone, this thread has realy helped me to decide. I have made my mind up and tomorow I will order the V Cross 3.0 for 927,000 THB. I reckon by the time I have added the extras such as carryboy and sports kit it will run to around 1,000,000. So, around 150K more than the 2nd hand one I am looking at but brand new, latest model and the saftey of mind that there are no prior issues with it. As another poster said, its a no brainer. Just a total bummer that I have to wait 3 months. :( Thanks again to you all much appreciated TLS
July 4, 201213 yr So roufly 15% more for a brand new truck compared to the used one you were looking to buy, yes its a no brainer I think you made the right choice but you gonna have 3 long month ahead of you
July 4, 201213 yr Congrats! They recently had a Isuzu showing at the Chiang Mai airport Mall They looked great inside & out! 3 months is not too bad & I would have considered 3 months do-able. But when my wife spoke to rep in their office they said here in CM would be closer to 5-6 months as they had over 500 orders & that was before the show.
