Samui, Phangan still without power

SURAT THANI: -- Thousands of homes and businesses on Samui and Phangan islands in Surat Thani province were still without electricity for the second day on Wednesday after an underwater power cable ruptured on Tuesday. Tourists were rushing to leave the islands.

Normally the holiday season Samui island, one of Thailand's major tourist destinations, would have about 20,000 tourists. That number had shrunk to about one thousand, reports said.

Power was still sporadically available on parts of the islands, but hotels and resorts were having to rely on their own generators, or candles. The wireless telecommunication network had also been knocked out.

The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) in Koh Samui district explained that the outage was caused by a rupture to the submarine power cable connecting a substation on Samui island with the mainland.

The reserve power supply was only able to distribute electricity to one fifth of the islands' area at a time, on a two hour rotation, the PEA said.

Wanni Thaipanich, chairwoman of the association of tourism promotion for Koh Phangan, said smaller hotels were suffering as guests cancelled out and moved to larger establishments with their own power generators.

Provincial governor Chatpong Chatphuti said that engineers were being flown in to address the problem and it was expected that the power would be on again by 11pm of Wednesday. Mobile generators had also been dispatched to major hospitals on the islands.

PTT had been asked to urgently transport fuel to both islands as there was now a fuel shortage and people were hoarding supplies. Many hotels were running out of fuel for their generators.

Samui and Phangan have a combined daily power consumption of about 90 megawatts.

same for me I have been on Samui and Pangan during the "Fai Dab" 20.000 and now 1.000 left? BS!

I'm working for a renewable energy company selling, building and/or operating environmental friendly and carbon neutral Gasification power Plants. Yes, these plants are rather small, only a few Megawatt at the time are economical. But the idea is to have a lot of spread over all Thailand. With this, nobody would need the big coal/gas/oil fired plants anymore which damage our environment and health. Oh, and by the way, no more stupid power cuts anymore...

Sounds like the business owners are trying to push a case for 'compensation' due to lost revenue from all the departed.

What, exactly, is being 'gasified'? Can they run on 'gasified' rice or something else common (inexpensive) in Thailand?

If the underwater cable ruptured on Tuesday as they say, I very much wonder how poster Gatorade knew already the evening before when the power cuts would start? Somebody's telling porkies here!

The fact that all major resorts on Samui have their own gennies says a lot about the banana infastructure. Samui is the cash-cow of Surat province, and the tax take is enormous. And electricity supply these days is as bad as 20 yrs ago. Who is in charge of this sh1t?

Adequate fuel supply to Samui assured

SAMUI: -- PTT has dispatched 10 oil trucks to Koh Samui, to address the acute demand for fuel on the tourist island.

Samui’s power system went out on Tuesday, prompting each of big business operators to stock up 3,000-6,000 litres of diesel for their power generators.

The company said that the the 10 trucks have already loaded about 150,000 litres to the five stations on the island and another shipment is due early morning tomorrow.

PTT said that the company is closely monitoring the situation and will ensure adequate fuel supply until the island’s power is back.

"remember those serious power outages, we need sufficient power for tourism".

On the other hand, it should concern people. If a problem like this can not be dealt with faster, what would happen in the event of difficulties with a nuclear plant ...

could you trust Nuclear power on the Island? esp with all the flooding !

this has been a really bad year for the tourism sector and this mishap just does not help business at all.

the question is, would the The Provincial Electricity Authority compensate the business or offer some kind of rebates or whatever to compensate for the losses.

This is not a Thai thing so no need to blame Thailand, this things do happen, as i said hope business will be compensated in one way or another

OK. So 14 hour difference. We had it from 10am-12pm today, so I guess we're due again at midnight. I'll stay up for this!... lol.
