Has anyone here ever seen or heard of a motorbike having an accident while getting water dumped on them from a pickup? All the ones i know of were drunks on bikes running off the road at night...

I have heard of serious accidents on motor bikes at high speeds on highways by people throwing buckets of cold water at them.

Been riding a motorbike here for years, nothing annoys me more than trying to ride down the road avoiding having a bucket of water thrown at you.

According to Chooka it does not happen

Hitting a motor bike at high speed with a bucket of water on a highway. Give that man a teddy bear, bloody good shot. In Chiangmai the bikes are crawling along at walking pace through the traffic, it is even hard to walk at a decent pace through the gridlock.

very nice for CM but most of us do not live there

years ago i was hit square in the face by a bucket of ice water while doing about 60km/h up Asoke.

i very nearly lost the bike, and was completely blind (full face helmet thank god) for a few seconds.

dead sober about 10 am

Is this really going to work? You have convoys of pickups in Chiangmai and traffic is in gridlock and it is impossible to drive around the inner city area. If you have the police stopping and booking every single vehicle because they have a bucket of water in the back then traffic will go from a snails pace to a complete stop. What about all the people on the side of the road with thier large bins of water thowing it on the road or the firehoses spraying mega amounts of water from the stages?

If they really wanted to stamp this out they should have started an adverstising campaign 6 months ago outlining the intentions and not 14 days prior to the event.

If this does work all I can see is the reduction of all the pretty little things in wet T Shirts and that will be ashame. I came to Thailand for Songkran and all the dripping wet young ladies.smile.png

all in favor for songkran being a total " no bra " holliday ?

Count me in

I never said that bike riders do not get sprayed with water.

For three days the country is one big party. This is not every week and is born out of tradition. IMHO people should adjust their behavior accordingly and take extra precautions. If this means driving a bit slower, dealing with being hit with water, and allowing extra time to get from place to place so be it. Although I dont think its a good idea to be throwing water at vehicles moving at high speeds, they should be focusing their efforts on the drunk drivers and not people who are trying to enjoy the celebration. This is supposed to be a fun time for everybody, I wish were I grew up we had something like this once a year (USA). If you dont enjoy it then go shopping on the 12th to pick up everything you need for three days and stay inside.

I agree, focus on drunks driving.

Anyway i don't use the bike anymore during song kran. After that bucket of water on me at speed i felt it was too dangerous. I just use the car now for those days. No problems here, but I do own a car not everyone does. Common sense often leaves the brain of people here, anyway i like songkran it can be fun. I don't mind getting wet its all fun and games.

what i cannot understand is why implement these ill-thought-out sweeping legislations, 2 weeks before songkran. Surely it would be better practice to announce the legislation early and prepare well in advance?

Another genuinely great idea that would certainly reduce the road toll, especially more minor injuries caused by bikes sliding off the wet slippery roads. They get very wet, especially during the dry season with the build-up of sludge on the roads. Water play should b restricted to walking-only areas or private residences. The problem will be giving it over to provincial govenors - will they have the will to enforce it? It will certainly stop some of the horrendous traffic congestion in many of the towns here. Took me over an hour to travel a few hundred meters through a water celebration once...let's see how this pans out.

It is a great idea but I doubt any of us believe that it will actually be enforced.

Cambodia managed to stop water throwing in the tourist centre of Siem Reap - I can only imagine that Cambodian enforcement is somewhat better than Thai.

It's easy to enforce ... if they really wanted to. The government can force provincial offices to do it and threaten them with a cut in government funding if they don't do it. But will they do it? Probably not, based on lax law enforcement in this country. Edited by culicine

Oh well I now have no use for my BT50 Pro pick up truck.......

So the main entertainment will be watching this being enforced.........

"adjust their methods to best fit their localities"

I see this as more detrimental and ineffective, especially here in Issan.

But it raises the teamoney take exponentially.

Songkran is the biggest holiday in Thailand and i do believe most Thais are celebrating it.

Each year i see countless people having a lot of fun,why try and take that away from them.

I see rows of pick-ups both carrying water and people and having an all out water fight,it is a lot of fun!!!!

Sure there are accidents and mishaps but in general it is not that bad.

Just check out all of the smiles on people faces, especially kids.

In Europe it is still cold and most people have spend most of the last six months indoors,if you don't like this water fest just stay home for a few days. After dark it is mostly quiet every where.

If i have to go into town i will slow down and let the children soak me,have some consideration and some fun!!

"People on pickup trucks WILL be banned from splashing water on public roads, in order to reduce the risk of accident occurring."

WILL be banned??

They actually HAVE been banned since at least 1979.

Section 20 of Thailand's Land Traffic Act B.E. 2522 (A.D. 1979) states:

A driver is responsible for not letting his passengers, animals, or loads to fall, leak, give out smell, reflect light, etc, which may cause harm or danger to the public.

The mischievous Thai public have been abusing this law for decades it seems, and now it is time for the authorities to step in and take control.

The Land Traffic Act goes on to state: Title 18 - Powers of Traffic Officers and Competent Officers

The shortage of competent officers is where traffic law enforcement unravels out of control.

This will be as effective as "Thai people are banned from speaking Thai during Songkran!"

It's not April 1st for another 3 days, is it!?!?!?!

It must be that Thai April Fool's Day is early this year!

Never going to happen.......

I guess you don't live in Thailand.

I have seen many accidents caused by idiots throwing a bucket of water at a passing motocycle.

Iced water is the latest stupid idea, and has an even worse effect.

Last year I saw some idiot farangs throughing water with ICE CUBES.

Complete and utter idiots.
