Police in Baan Chang, Rayong, get ready for AEC by improving English communication skill

RAYONG, 4 July 2013 (NNT) -- Local police in Rayong Province are taking an English course in hopes to communicate better with tourists when the ASEAN Economic Community comes in 2015.

Deputy Superintendent of the Baan Chang District Police Station, Police Lieutenant Colonel Songkran Sanhakon, has arranged an English training course for traffic police of the station.

Speaking after the opening of the course, Pol-Lt Songkran said the course would enable the participants to use the skill in providing better service to tourists especially in the protection of their life and property. The program has Mr. David Robert, an American English teacher, as its instructor.

The program promotes the use of English, which is a popular and ASEAN-recognized language. Officers will use the new communication skill to provide tourists with such information as local attractions, and also other assistance relating to security protection in the area.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Songkran said that the program would raise the authorities’ capability, especially in terms of English communication.

English speaking tourists have been coming for years. It may be the ASEAN recognised language because people from other ASEAN nations have been keen to learn it for years as it is the international language. I guess this whole concept has simply caught Thailand by surprise and snuck up on them. Maybe they thought Thai was going to be the ASEAN language. Thailand should have started a few back to go into ASEAN on level footing.

I hope Mr David Robert has a work permit for teaching at the correct premises. Would be extremely embarrassing if Bangkok immigration came down and done him.

But well done Rayong police :D

And make the Thai language mandatory for all Airliners, ships at sea and port, all international airlines staff in all countries. That will make it easy.

The first thing Mr. Robert (note: not Mr. David) should teach them is not to shout "YOU" at anyone, ever. I know they think the equivalent in Thai is not rude, but after 36 years of experience in Thailand, it still rankles me.
