Safety of MBK iphone unlock service

Featured Replies

I just moved to Bangkok and need to unlock my American iPhone 5. I've looked at MBK, but don't know how trustworthy the kiosk unlock services are (ie copying personal information, hacking phone....). I've spoke with my service provider Dtac (doesn't unlock phones) and Apple store in Siam Paragon. Technician at apple recommended AOB in MBK to unlock my phone.

How trustworthy are the cell phone unlock places in MBK?

Can anyone suggest a reputable/honest place that can unlock an iPhone 5?

Thank you in advance for any advice/suggestions.

Try to unlock yourself . That will be safe . Contact your American carrier if they support official unlock or not ...

Thank you for your suggestions. I've already contacted my carrier back home. Always the first option. They unfortunately will not due to a two year contract the phone is still in.

I just want to know if the unlock services at MBK can be trusted.

The question of safety does indeed arise. I once had a phone unlocked at MBK and then got heaps of SMS messages that cost me lot. A call to the helpline of my carrier, DTAC, put an end to it. Suggestion: hand your mobile over without a SIM card in it for the unlocking.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

I have used services at MBK without any hassle. However, you can unlock the phone yourself, usually far cheaper than MBK. I used www.unlockunit.com and had a reply with the code within 20 minutes and it worked fine.

It's best to make a back up of your phone. Then erase ALL. Take it to the shop.

Then once you get it back, restore from a back up. Be careful though.

Make sure you never restore a back up from online do it locally

Friend of mine tried to unlock her iPhone there and it was very effectively bricked. Luckily they managed to sell her a new board to get it working again!

Again thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm going by tomorrow to AOB at MBK and see what happens.

I would be extremely careful trying to unlock an iPhone 5 or 5S. I researched many options with my previously owned iPhone 5 and settled for my carrier to do it. It took the mothers six weeks to do it instead of the advertised twenty days, but it was successfully done and I had an existing contract. I can't see why your existing carrier is refusing an unlock.

Anyway, lesson learned. I buy my phones unlocked now and choose my 4G carriers at much cheaper rates.

Sounds like your phone is 'factory locked'. It can be unlocked but generally they send it off to a specialist and ask ฿8 to 10 000.-. I was much mocked on this forum when I said I couldn't unlock my iPhone myself. In the end I bought a 'new' one (which turned out to be more than a year old) as they offered me something for my old one. I dropped the bloody thing a year later.
