PHUKET: -- Provincial Police are currently refitting and upgrading three patrol cars to police known crime hotspots in Phuket in order to enhance tourists’ safety at night during the high season.

“Following the appointment of the new Phuket Provincial Commander, Maj Gen Ong-art Phiwruangnont [story here], we have been instructed to redouble our efforts to improve safety for tourists,” Phuket Provincial Police chief investigator Wanchai Palawan told the Phuket Gazette.

“One of his initiatives regarding this was assigning us to patrol certain areas more vigorously. These areas are Patong, Karon, Rawai, Chalong, Kathu and Phuket Town.

“To this end we are upgrading three vehicles in our existing fleet, and each will carry five officers to patrol these areas from midnight to 6am. The officers will be armed and each vehicle will also carry a high-powered rifle for extreme cases.”

It not new tools to do the job that is needed it the will to do the job they are paid for which is not going to change anytime soon. These vehicles will be just used to sleep in on night duty.

post-137512-0-39385100-1381553163.jpgWelcome to Phuket. Enjoy your holiday!

great notify indeed, wait till they break up a brawl walk in the car and out with your new toy..

What sort of situation do they anticipate would need a high powered rifle to quell. The risk of colateral damage will be huge.

Five guys in one vehicle..........(????), wouldn't five spread out on bikes cover more area?

But then how to store the high powered rifle............

Do they really need a Land Rover Discovery ?

Should be a tank for Phuket...

Enjoy your holidays in Phuketcheesy.gif

Makes me feel so so much safer knowing the BIBs are carrying high powered rifles in town.....NOT!!

Land Rover Discoverys are like tanks, if they have to get somewhere fast they they are in trouble. Better to use a Honda Click...!!

What will the Phuket Tourist assistance vehicles look like in 2014/15?

Why shouldn't they use a Discovery? That Series 2 pictured that has been refitted and upgraded is at least nine years old, probably an economic choice.

wild west ,need Land rovers ,for job like this ,are they new ,? looks like someone made a little

No more than a 50 cal machine gun, but boys and their toys.....

Yeah right. A nine year old disco or a brand new Japanese SUV. Know which one I think is more reliable. And the price of spare parts? Import tax applies to those as well for the Disco, not so for the Japanese car assembled here

. But if they had the Discos already, then might as well use them. The fault lies in the original purchase, whenever that was.

The know-it-all critics now have fresh meat to feed on. The police can't win where they are concerned. Complain when nothing is done, complain when something is done. The only thing that seems not to change, is the negative and boring tune they sing.

They need it to shoot the Landrover when it refuses to start.

Have you ever actually been in a Land Rover discovery?

Go on then smartie pants - let's here all your positive comments and stories about Phuket's finest.

The officers will be armed and each vehicle will also carry a high-powered rifle for extreme cases. This is not the Lebanon, when was it last necessary to use high powered firearms against tourists? Thankfully firearm offences with Tourists are very low, more checks should be placed for knives on two men driving motorbikes at night, the Police have made some road checks. Sadly a knife caused the murder of an Australian tourist Michelle Smith in one of the most upmarket areas of Phuket.

I had to laugh at that. I used to own a Discovery here in Phuket a few years ago and I well know it's problems. Starting, over heating, and a very thirsty appetite. Drives like it on rails, very solid/safe ride.

Armed patrol cars and high powered rifles? Why? Have the taxi mafia and jet ski operators started shooting ...and wearing body armor? You mean the crackdowns weren't working?

wearing a new suit does not make the person wearing it any better , the corruption and bias will still be there .

It's sort of a vision problem. Some just can't see the difference between something actually being done, and window-dressing & grandstanding. It's why snake oil sells so well: always suckers hanging on every word and lining up to buy. Those who know the scam and talk about it openly are "naysayers", "doubters" & "haters". It'll always be that way.

Escaped crocodiles?

Have you tried beating it with a tree branch while telling it exactly how you feel about it?
