Rent car BKK, drop off CM?

Recommended Posts

I can do this in my country, but have no idea if this is possible in Thailand or not.

I'd like to rent a car in BKK, drive it to CM, and drop off or leave it there. In other words, I don't want to have to return it back down to BKK. Are there rental companies that allow for this? If so, can you recommend?

(Even better is if the company can deliver to me in BKK, and/or pick it up from me in CM)

Thanks.

Not sure about a drop-off in CM, but I used Hertz in the past with a pick-up in BKK and a drop-off in Phuket. Check with them or any international car rental company (Avis, Budget, etc.)

I've done it with Avis. I rent the car in the US to avoid "farang price" possibilities. I also have my credit card (Visa) laws of the US to protect me if I'm scammed with surcharges that weren't listed. I print the web pages for the offer.

Even when in Thailand, I would log onto a US site and rent and pay for the car!!!! :)

If you actually talk to someone, it's negotiable. If they don't have enough cars in CM then they have to pay some people to move them there. If they have too many in CM, then they will charge you a surcharge.

See if you can find someone who already wants another car in CM, and you may just pay the normal rate with no surcharge.

My idea you can do it.

BUT.

Take my advise if you don't want inconvenience for yourself.

This happened to me at June.

Someone crashed my cars and my insurance company gave me a voucher to pick one car for 3 days, during my car under repairing.

I got a Honda Brio from BUDGET RentaCar, Good small car. I was surprised, when my college who escorted me to SB airport to pick up car made around 50 pictures around the car and inside too.

When I returned back the car I recognized well why she did it.

Before they were very helpful with 1 million smiles but the back way they were full inpatient, unfriendly and grabby. They showed the all crashes in the car and told I made it. So I called my college come to there with pictures. Then crash by crash they check the car, like this:

- But this crash you made !

- No, it's an old, see the picture !

And this around fifty times. They weren't fed up, they wanted to earn some money.

And came the peak of procedure.

The guy told:

- I see this crash in first spoiler was here before here but now it is DEEPER, so you crashed the car on same place !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And explained he remembers the crash's deepness !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I told: your Mom (of course in my language) and please show me your supervisor, This was useful. My man started to smile, and asked I liked this car or not, etc.... I smiled too, and told I liked this car, but show me your supervisor.

So I didn't pay any fine, but you can imagine guys what is happening to me if my college wouldn't make a lot of picture.

SO, WHEN you pick up car, don't let yourself hurry, sign every damage to the annex of contract, and make pictures, keep pictures and when they start to f_ucj with you, ask to speak to supervisor.

regards

ps: and FORGET BUDGET rentacar

I have absolutely no idea why “ Loles “ the previous poster denigrates Budget like that because I successfully rented a car through them one way and there was absolutely no drama whatsoever. I was very pleased with the service in every regard starting in Pattaya which they even delivered to my condo and they even collected it at the condo at my destination thumbsup.gif Yes, they thoroughly inspected the vehicle at the other end but gave me the green light very quickly. You do have to pay an extra charge for doing this but it is considerably less than taking the vehicle back to the original location. I thoroughly recommend Budget

For what that hire will cost you, coupled with driving stress in and around Bkk and further affield, I would hire a car with driver.

No worries hassle or anything else, no arguments or excessive threats or charges. Clean easy and can be just as cheap and so much more convemient as you dont even have to park it.

I rent my cars from a local company in Chiang Mai 10 percent off price, pay a 5,000baht deposit that is the insurance deductible, check around the car and put all the scratches on the paper work. Come back and drop off very fast check around give back the deposit hand shake and a wai on my way.

Yes you can rent a car in Bangkok and drop off in Chiang Mai for a fee 3,000 to 5,000baht drop off fee, about the same price in the states. Put me on as a driver, pay for the gas, and 1,000baht for me and I will drive back to Bangkok for you.

A similar thing happened to me with National at Frankfurt Airport.

I have done one-way car hires with Budget. The policy was - take the car for at least three days and you can drop it at any Budget office in Thailand with no added drop charge. I have found their service to be professional, rates competitive, and the cars are always newish and in good nick.

Easycar (think easyjet) was pulled up over this in the UK. I think it was an undercover film crew picked up the vehicle drove it away filmed it sitting for the day with no one near it and then returned it to the depot, only to be informed of all the damage that had been done during the hire period, like the ding on the roof. At the time they were only using the Mercedes A class.

I've done this a number of times. I use the FastCarUK website, which will give you competitive quotes from a number of rental agencies, including Hertz and Budget. If you rent for over 3 days, there is no drop off charge. You can have the car delivered to you at your hotel, and can contact the rental agency in Chiang Mai to have it picked up at your hotel there. I have never had any problems using them. Be prepared to fax them a copy of your drivers license and the credit card you will be using to pay for the rental. Other than that, just insure you fill the gas tank on the car prior to returning it, to avoid a surcharge.

I rented with Hertz (through a third party) picked it up at the airport in Bangkok and returned to the airport in CM. Just drive through the drop off areas in front of the terminal and there is someone there waiting, don't even have to park and haul your bags.

No additional fees for one-way hire (10 days). Found Hertz to be very professional.

We just rented a Honda City from Budget to go one way from Udon Thani to BKK. We used a coupon that was a bit of a pain to deal with but it really saved us a lot of money. We had the car for 7 days and cost us about 4500 baht total. Yes, they did go over all the dings before we left the parking lot and noted each one. In BKK, a Budget employee came to our hotel and picked up the car for no extra charge. Very good deal and we will probably do the same thing again.

I have been hiring cars in Thailand for about 7 years now with absolutely NO problems. I have used & recommend Fastcar hire brokerage, a UK company operating world wide.

Log onto Fastcar with your requirement details & you will get an immediate quote from several rental companies. you then choose the company you like price of best. I've always been welcomed when booking through Fastcat. On a couple of occasions when I've had special requests I've received better service from dealing through Fastcar than dealing direct with the car rental company.

As previous reply, you get free oneway if renting for 3 or more days.

No, I don't have any affiliation with Fastcar, just hope others enjoy the service I have in the past.

Cheers..... Mal.

If you actually talk to someone, it's negotiable. If they don't have enough cars in CM then they have to pay some people to move them there. If they have too many in CM, then they will charge you a surcharge.

See if you can find someone who already wants another car in CM, and you may just pay the normal rate with no surcharge.

Avis wouldn't be able to charge you a "farang" price, don't be ridiculous, they are an American company and have nothing to hide or any possibility to scam renters.

BUT by booking on the Avis America website, you are making a big mistake and are in fact, paying more than you should be. A whole lot more in fact.

The Thai website, which is in English and Thai offers the same cars at half the prices quoted on the "American", which is actually the international site. Hertz is the same, however for Budget, I believe only an international site is offered, so even if you log on to the Budget Thailand website, their prices are higher than what Hertz and Avis charge.

The only advantage of booking on the international websites of all these car rental companies is that you will be able to book at short notice, i.e. same day bookings are accepted. On the Thai websites, you have to book at least 2 days in advance. This means that booking anytime before 00.00 2 days before your anticipated rental start date is allowed so a rental booked for 00.01 pickup at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 16Nov is OK if you make the booking no later than 23.59 on 14Nov. Anything sooner and you'll have to call the call centers, which usually offer the same rates.

For one way rentals, a 3000 Baht surcharge for 1-3 day rentals, 1500 for 4-6 day rentals and free for rentals of 7 days or more is applied by most major international and Thai car rental companies including Thai rent-a-car. You may drop-off at any location in Thailand. Booking a one way rental is thus a lot cheaper than in the States, where it could be either relatively cheap or ridiculously expensive, depending on your drop-off location. This despite the US fleet of rental cars at any given location being much bigger than the fleet of any rental car company in Thailand.

Some websites allow you to specify your drop-off location when you book; if not, then let the rental location know when you pick up your car. If you forget to do this, no problems, just call the call center and let them know of the adjustment (i.e. drop off of rental car in a different location). Although the OP asked about picking up in BKK and dropping off in Chiang Mai, if you need to pick up in Bangkok, you can drop off at any other Bangkok location without letting the company know in advance. Just go directly to that location and no drop fee will be applied, even for short rentals. However, this seems to apply only to Bangkok, for which major companies usually have 3 locations, which are Suvarnabhumi, Don Muang and city.

Actually, Avis Thailand is not owned by the main Avis company. It is a Licensee country. It is a separate company that pays a fee to Avis to use it's logo's, reputation, booking system etc. You may be surprised to know that until about 2 years ago, Avis Inc. and Avis Europe were completely separate companies. Avis Europe EMEA had the license to operate in the world outside North and South America, until about 2025. The US Avis only had operations in North America and South America. In 2011 Avis Inc bought Avis EMEA,which itself had earlier bought the Budget brand.

I used to work for Avis Europe and got free rentals when on holiday. The booking info I used meant I was not supposed to be charged for any damage to cars, yet I was charged for a replacement windscreen on a Fortuner at BKK. I took this up when I got back to work as I worked in the head office and was able to get a refund, but this didn't mean that Avis Thailand didn't charge me it when they shouldn't have. I left Avis earlier this year and when I went back to Thailand in August and rented a car, I used Hertz and had no issues. Even when we got a bit lost and returned the car about 45 minutes late Hertz didn't charge for an extra days rental when they were entitled to do so. I know that Avis would have charged me.

I know that Avis Europe has specifically tightened up on damage charging and late return charges since being taken over, so although I worked for Avis for a number of years I am now a Hertz renter, as it's now my own money I'm spending.

Yes, that's correct. Every car rental agency has slightly different policies on one way rentals. As mentioned earlier, with Avis 1-3 day rentals incur a 3000 Baht drop fee, for 4-6 day rentals it's reduced to 1500 Baht and for rentals of 7 days or more there is no drop fee.

Thai rent-a-car charges 2000 Baht even for 1 day rentals; they probably don't charge anything for longer rentals.

Other companies such as Hertz are similar.
