PHUKET: -- A hotel maid died at a Phuket resort yesterday afternoon when her neck was broken by a service lift being activated while she was leaning inside, trying to retrieve a clothes iron.

Karon Police arrived at the Phuket Peach Blossom Resort in Karon to find the body of Jaruwan Prasit, 21, inside the lift shaft, lying on top of the service elevator.

“It took Ruamjai Foundation rescue workers almost two hours to recover the body,” Karon Police Deputy Superintendent Pachai Matthayan told the Phuket Gazette.

Hotel staff told police Ms Jaruwan was retrieving bed linen from the lift when the accident occurred.

“When the service lift arrived, she started unloading bedsheets, pillowcases and other stuff. She was almost finished unloading, she only had to get the iron,” one maid told the Gazette.

“While she was trying to reach the iron, the lift accidentally started going down and she was pulled down with it,” the staffer said.

“We are so sorry that we could not help her at all,” she added.

Anurak Chuaysri, Executive Assistant Manager at the resort, told the Gazette the tragedy has taken its toll on their staff.

“This has deeply saddened everyone here. The service lift has been shut down and we have contacted our elevator maintenance crew to inspect the lift and make it safe.

“We don’t want any more incidents like this, or our staff being put at risk,” Mr Anurak said.

"The service lift has been shut down and we have contacted our elevator maintenance crew to inspect the lift and make it safe." Then everything is ok ?

Why did they not make it safe before ? Someone should be hanged for this.

Very true. Last I remember has to be12 years back this sort of occurrence happening in Canada. Had to be until they decided to come up with rules, regulations and routine maintenance schedules and

Sure enough, that was really only the under-developed parts of Toronto, where the mechanics maybe just weren't doing what they were supposed to. Or maybe somebody circumvents a safety device for one reason or another to add to an endless list, but in a way more sophisticated den of iniquity than Thailand's.thumbsup.gifw00t.gif

Always a great shame when anyone loses their life but you're being a little over-dramatic, not to say imaginative, there, don't you think? Perhaps you could point out just one "acidic and venomous" remark that has been posted prior to your post.

Is this really according to Thai procedures? What should happen is that the police should cordon off the area around the "incident" and perform an independent evaluation what really happened, before the hotel staff together with the maintenance company get the chance to remove any "evidence".

With the present procedure no one will be held responsible, and no one will learn how to avoid such incidents in the future.

As usual the idiots just ignore the dangerous problems in the hope nothing bad will happen. Then when it does they say they will sort it out - I will bet this time next year it still hasn't been made any safer less dangerous than it is now....

Yes, you are correct. I was a bit over-dramatic and for that I beg pardon of the readers of this forum. The comment concerning "acidic and venomous" remarks was a bit premature. It was intended as a reference for postings not yet made, for which I also beg pardon.

Thank you for the kind reminder. :)
