Thai Rath Apologises For Mixing Up Protest Photos

BANGKOK: -- The editorial team of Thai Rath newspapers has issued an apology over a misleading photo of the clashes between anti-government protesters and the police in Bangkok.

Published on the frontpage of 27 December 2013 issue, the photo showed an unidentified man firing his handgun. The caption that accompanied the photo said the gunman was firing the weapon in the clashes which erupted near Thai-Japanese Stadium in Dindaeng district yesterday.

One policeman and one anti-government protester died of gunshot wounds, while many more have also been injured with gunshots. The police said mysterious individuals fired these rounds from their position on a high building near the clash site.

The photo, which was purported to show one such individual, had been circulated widely in the social network, but it soon emerged that the photo was in fact about a separate violent incident on 25 November 2008, when a group of anti-government Yellowshirts was clashing with Redshirts supporters near Soi Vibhavadi 3.

In the light of this revelation, Thai Rath has published on its website a statement that the man seen in the newspaper frontpage photo was not related to the clashes at Thai-Japanese Stadium yesterday.

It also offered an apology over the mistake.

However, the matter also raised another case of political bickering, with Mr. Suthep Thaugsuban, leader of the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD), accusing the government of publishing the photo as a false proof that PCAD supporters were responsible for the gunfire which killed and injured a number of people yesterday.

Mr. Suthep specifically named Deputy Prime Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul as the source of the rumour. According to Mr. Suthep, Mr. Surapong showed the photo during one of his live press conference on national television and identified it as a gunman hired by PCAD.

Earlier today, Mr. Surapong said in a press conference that he never used that photo to allege any wrongdoing against PCAD.

"[Mr. Suthep] can watch every video clip of my press conference on every state-owned TV channel," Mr. Surapong said, "I never said such thing".

Either one is not very intelligent. All live press conference are viedoed. Sooner or later one would be caught lying.

Mr. Suthep or Mr. Surapong? Let them settle in court.

More lies huh?

One thing is true though, I am pretty sure.

The gun man in the picture is a bona fide yellow.

How can using a 5 year old archive photo that was deliberately cropped be a "mistake"? A mistake they got caught maybe?

we are human, we all do mistake

Life was so much easier for those that use deception to fool people when everything wasn't recorded and dated, wasn't it.

Amazing some can try to justify these actions. Coming from a supposed professional newspaper. All credibility has just been lost. This is not just a simple mistake. It's something untrue published that would add fuel to the fire and cause more possible loss of life by heightened emotions. Absolutely unacceptable.

Impossible that that picture was used by mistake. Incredible that one or more persons think they can get away with it.Both sides do not have the smartest people planning things.

No mix up at all. Deliberate misuse of and by the looks of it photoshopping of this photograph. The two backgrounds depicted are very different. Deliberate attempt to deceive and set up those the govt dislikes. In effect business as usual.

Yes of course, Thai Rath is well known for it's love of all things Thaksin and would be more than willing to "frame" sutheps mob on behalf of Yinglucks caretaker government. coffee1.gif (caution: sarcasm alert)

You are probably right. The 6 year old pic could have just popped up into the editors screen all by itself. Photoshop could then have been turned on by mistake and the date stamp on the 2008 pic erased by somebody's pet walking across the keyboard. Well, its certainly possible.

Another, and I would say more likely scenario, is that the thoroughly biased pro cult-of-Thaksin paper decided that posting that pic would rationalize their stance. Utterly disgraceful and the editor needs a day in court and the paper sued for all it's worth. Interesting to see if there are any financial trails from abroad that coincide with this outrageous propaganda. The billions spent on perception management by Thaksin cause some strange happenings.

"you say your sorry but ur not, your only sorry cause u got caught"

To late for an apology, the harm has been done, people believe

everything they see, propaganda, the twisting of the truth for

someones benefit.,another HONEST mistake ?

Didn't say the paper did it. They printed it for sure but you raise a good point. Who produced this fake and got the paper to print it? Hmm, tough one.

Strange that a 5 year old picture so at once can jump in an article " by mistake " .

Typical response when caught doing something inappropriate, oops sorry the 5 year old photo got mixed up with the new ones. It was purely a case of a newspaper trying to mislead the readers and create more trouble. No such thing as a professional newspaper in Thailand.

It's not a fake photo. It is a genuine armed yellowshirt protester albeit one from 2008.

Considering the violence inflicted so far by sutheps "followers" it is academic to be discussing a mix up over a photo when there are plenty of contemporary incidents to worry about.

Someone has superimposed a picture from 2008 onto a scene from 2013 claiming the two are linked to each other. The pictures are both real, their linkage is fake. The message the pictures tries to create is fake. The picture is a fake as a single unit. It's an attempt to create a cover story for the shootings that took place on that day. I'd like to know who is responsible and what they are so desperate to cover up. Don't you?

Yes let's ignore Thai Rath's obvious ploy to make the anti protestors look bad. It's not a 'mix up'. They got caught doing it and it just goes to prove what everyone has known Thai Rath to be, a pro-Thaksin newspaper.
