Thai PM to be charged with neglect of duty

BANGKOK, February 18, 2014 (AFP) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will be charged with neglect of duty over a rice farm subsidy scheme and could be removed from office if found guilty, an anti-graft panel announced Tuesday.

Yingluck had ignored warnings that the flagship rice policy was fostering corruption and causing financial losses, the National Anti-Corruption Commission said in a statement.

She will be summoned to hear the charges on February 27.

The scheme, which guarantees farmers above-market rates for rice, has become a lightning rod for anger among anti-government protesters. They say it has encouraged corruption, drained the public coffers and left the country with a mountain of unsold stock.

News of the charges came just hours after violent clashes broke out between riot police and anti-government demonstrators in the capital Bangkok that left at least two people dead, including a policeman, and dozens wounded.

Yingluck's opponents say she is a puppet for her elder brother Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire tycoon-turned-premier who was ousted by the military in a coup in 2006 and later fled overseas to avoid jail for a corruption conviction.

Thaksin's critics accuse his family of using taxpayers' money to buy the support of rural voters through populist policies.

Democracy at it's finest. Congrats to the NACC. Unfortunately, you've got a long way to go.

Keep that private jet to Dubai warm, Poo. If you're anything like your coward brother, you'll be flying off before you go to court.

Now that she will be charged, what are the chances she will have to resign?

I believe that if she is charged she is required to step down from official responsibilities

Shes only being charged for negligence? That seems like a awfully minor charge.

'Anti-graft agency resolves to charge caretaker PM for neglect of duty in rice pledging scheme case, summons her to hear charges on Feb 27 /MCOT'

hey, is it a corruption charge, or is just 'neglect of duty' ? well, not so familiar with these Thai legal expression . . .

Now that she will be charged, what are the chances she will have to resign?

'tis par for the course in Thailand.

What are the chances there would never have been any charges at all but for the election? She's doing well if they have cut back from the corruption charge initially suggested. Remember Suthep is out on Murder charges.

Too many people here with conflicting interests. Let's lock everyone up!

It's neither.

real media who are not supporting and angling for a coup are stating the following.

"She is not charged, the phrase means she is being informed of allegations being made against her"

So, no charges and nothing imminent judicial coup wise.

Pity all you clever people who support suthep have no thai friends and don't know anything about the confilct other than Bluesky and Nation propaganda.

I'm waiting for Chalerm to step in with his 90 7 day plan to protect her, and find an answer... maybe he'll announce his plan after 8pm tonight, after he's plastered.

Negligence......by the Prime Minister.....of Thailand.......minor?

Faithful to the end... I grant you that.

She is being summonsed to hear charges against her. Anti-graft agency has resolved to charge her. So she's not being charged? Sure? How do you get to your conclusion?

Now that she will be charged, what are the chances she will have to resign?

Slim to none.

Unfortunately Thai courts take a long time, probable come before the courts in about 6 years, just in time for the Japanese Olympic games where she can do the same vanishing trick as her scum bag of a brother.

NACC to press charges against PM for rice-pledging scheme
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday found grounds to press charges and initiate impeachment proceedings against caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for alleged negligence and dereliction of duty in the controversial rice-pledging scheme, which has cost the country dearly.

The agency summoned Yingluck to acknowledge the charges on February 27.

The decision was made after the agency's investigation found evidence; both through witnesses and documents, that she had been warned by many organisations of possible massive damage and corruption in the scheme.

Even the NACC warned in a written document that the scheme could cause massive corruption in every stage of the process.

Moreover Yingluck was informed of the corruption that was occurring in the project during debates in the Parliament. Wicha, chairman of sub-committee on rice pledging audit, said the scheme had caused losses of about Bt200 billion.

The Auditor General Office also issued a warning, asking her to review and halt the programme, which it said, had many irregularities and corruption.

A large number of rice farmers who entered the programme have not yet received payment and are now in serious financial difficulty.

Despite these factors, Yingluck insisted on continuing with the programme and this, Wicha said, clearly demonstrated her negligence to duty resulting in severe damage to the country.

No joke..along the lines of the men in black, fortune teller in burma a few years back, the shin corp employee in Chiang Mai. Pipkins, with his new account since feb 15th, will think of a good way to justify or deny the hitmen the snake in dubai is notorious for though..

Will the next Shinawatra please step up to the podium for their turn at running the country...rolleyes.gif

That might well be Somchai Wongsawat, seen today on TV depositing money in a GSB branch accompanied by the venerable Prompong Nopparit and Charupong Ruangsuwan and other PTP luminaries.

Strange to see them depositing their ill-gottens in a government bank, normally these sort of people are taking money out to store in safes in their own homes.

Now that she will be charged, what are the chances she will have to resign?

I know which is more likely to be found guilty, and I don't think it will be Suthep!

no more !!

now we put all the shinawatra in prison.

everybody !!

But.....but.....but.....it was the protesters fault!.......I guess,if found guilty, she'll be sent to an inactive post.
