Bomb attack on PDRC guards at Pratunam wounds six

2-22-2014-9-43-34-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The anti-government protest rally at Rajaprasong intersection came under bomb attack when a hand grenade was thrown at a security checkpoint of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) guards last night wounding six people.

The checkpoint tent of the PDRC is at Pratunam intersection and is where guards will check all people before allowing them enter the Rajaprasong rally site to ensure they carry no weapon.

The bomb attack was reported at about 9.15 p.m. when thousands of anti-government protesters were rallying to listen to PDRC leaders criticizing the work of the caretaker prime minister and rice-pledging scheme.

A loud explosion was heard near the security checkpoint. Six people, who included guards and passers-by were injured. Three vehicles stopping for green signal lights were also damaged.

Immediately after the explosion soldiers who guarded near the area to give protection to the people rushed to the scene along with volunteer nurses.

All six injured guards, protesters and passers-by were rushed to Chulalongkorn, Ramathibodi, and Phayathai hospitals.

Traffic at Pratunam flyover was closed immediately by guards and soldiers for safety reason.

Pol Maj Krailert Buakaew, deputy commander of the first division of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, who arrived to inspect the scene along with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) police said the grenade was believed to be thrown from the Pratunam flyover at the security checkpoint of the guards.

EOD police found a safety pin of the RGD 5 type hand grenade at the scene. The grenade is the same used by perpetrators to attack protesters at Bantadthong intersection which killed one protester, and at the Victory Monument which killed a vendor.

A PDRC co-leader Chumpol Chulasai blasted the perpetrators saying they were hooligans hired by the caretaker government.

He said security at both Rajaprasong and Pratunam would be stepped up. He said the PDRC would consider closing traffic on the Pratunam flyover from 7.00 p.m.-6.00 a.m. to prevent further attack by perpetrators using the flyover.

He also said that the bomb attack was the first time of the Rajaprasong protest site when the PDRC began to lay siege to the commercial area since January 13.

Coincidentally, just as Chalerm is applying strong-arm tactics to the Civil Court to change their ruling, the bomb attacks against the protesters increases. Six weeks ago, when these grenades started to be hurled at the protesters, Chalerm used that as the reason to impose the emergency decree, Once he had it, he instead went after the protesters themselves, while the grenade attacks simply intensified. This time, the argument he will pose will undoubtedly be the same. But the Civil Court is not stupid. They know how he wants to administer the decree. They know he wants to crack down not on the attacks against the protesters, but the protesters themselves. And the Civil Court - through their explicit and detailed nine point ruling, affirmed what the Constitutional Court themselves recently affirmed - that the protests are constitutional. The Civil Court's view is unlikely to change. Chalerm's fall-back plan circulated yesterday, is that he would simply invoke a new emergency decree, thereby retroactively nullifying the Civil Court's ruling. And that is the full extend that Chalerm regards the law.

I would love to see him simply try to introduce a new decree, because that would clearly demonstrate contempt of court and he could be arrested and detained pending a trial.

One wonders if the DSI Chief Tarit would oppose bail on such an occasion, in the same way that he has done whenever an opposition protester has been detained...?!

Another bombing/grenade from a flyover . . . shades of 2010 again . . . can't see that it would be that difficult for the Police to have a small presence in all these areas to deter these things from happening . . . they have 200,000+ here in Bangkok apparently so a few strategically placed better wouldn't go amiss.

Protest GUARDs ONLY in Amazing Thailand whistling.gif

Yes indeed, and of course, anywhere else in the world they wouldn't be needed, because they could rely upon the police to do their duty...!!

It would be naive to expect the police to protect you if you do not hesitate to fight them to the point of death.

Lets hope no one was seriously injured.

Why? do you know anybody there?......What did you expect would happen now after the bridge debacle, be fair, who ever did this hasn't used up all his grenades yet, can't let them go to waste.

But what you obviously appear to be suggesting is that they enjoyed the protection of the police in the first place, which they clearly didn't.

And if there is still any confusion in your mind as to who started all the killing, then I'm afraid you are beyond help. Even the police themselves were reported as being "disillusioned" after being sent in to the fray last week by Mad Dog Chalerm.

Nobody wants any of this to continue. All it takes is for the man in Dubai to realise that it's over, get all of his cronies to withdraw, and give Thailand a chance to get back on its feet.

But you know as well as I do that he is not going to allow that to happen; he would rather see the country burnt to ashes that give up his desire for Presidency. I envisage an abrupt ending for the guy in the not-too-distant future...!!

Oh come on George the protesters hate the police, and please don't you mean Mad dog suthep.

And what you envisage is maybe just some trick your brain is playing to keep you going.

.

The protesters are not alone.

In poll after poll, the majority of Thais don't trust the Thai police.

It's clear protesters have not received protection from their attackers for literally years and long before the recent battle with them.

And if one looks at attacks on police, one of the most severe was perpetrated by the red shirts in July 2007 when hundreds of Thai police were injured during the red shirt riot then.

Of course you could have read the OP where you would find that some of the first people on the scene were the army who were "GUARDING NEARBY".

"RGD 5 type hand grenade"

Seems a lot of Russian grenades being used lately. Arriving from Laos/Cambodia?

Read in previous news about the "possibility" of Cambodians (and by default, their weapons) being involved to make problems for the anti-government movement. There is no hard evidence, just the devices....

-*I typed this myself*-

Because there are no investigations of attempted murders of protesters, the police are under orders not to classify these as incidents and so we get no other details than this.

You have to be a red shirt target before the story is blown up with all sorts of details investigations and comments from the police. Such is the dreadful double standards that exist currently within Thailand.

Maybe Surapong will mention all this situation during his round the world all expenses paid luxury trip to bullshit the world's super powers.

But then again.

Things will be much more clear when we're under the friendly governance of the People's Council. There will be much more freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and privacy under this non-democratic system. I know we have no idea how long the People's Council will govern, or if or when there will ever be elections again, but I saw Suthep on BlueSky last night and he said things would be better. He didn't say how, but he did say the Shins wouldn't be there, and isn't that more important than all those messy details? Will there be a Constitutional Court? Will there be a Constitution? Will there be a parliament? The People's Council will know what's best for all within the kingdom, and we can just sit back, relax, and enjoy.

Suthep is a virtuous man, another Cincinnatus for sure, and will hand the reigns of power back to the People right away....(smiley/laughing face not inserted here).

By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 22 -- Five victims from Pratunam bombing last night have been released from hospital while the remaining one was still under observation by doctors, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)'s Erawan Medical Centre.

Erawan Medical Centre reported that six people - five men and one woman- were wounded by an explosion at Pratunam intersection which occured at around 8.30pm last night.

Five of them have been treated and were allowed to go home except for one man who was wounded in his back and sent to Chulalongkorn Hospital.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team inspected the scene and identified that the bomb was a Russian RGD-5 hand grenade. The explosion caused a 12 cm wide and 3 cm deep hole on the road.

The EOD team has also found the trigger, bearing the code 152-88Y3PRM-2 which was the same lot of RGD-5 hand grenade used in an attack at Siam Commercial Bank in Kannayao area on Thursday night.

The bombing at Pratunam area was not far from the rally site of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) at Ratchaprasong intersection, and PDRC volunteer guards this morning closed the Pratunam flyover bridge, resulting in a heavy traffic jam. (MCOT online news)
