Motorcycle gangsters throw bottle bombs, fire gunshots near Lumphini protest site

BANGKOK: -- Teenage motorcycle gangs threw three bottle bombs, fire several gunshots at the security guards near the rally site of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) at Lumphini park before dawn Wednesday but caused no injury.

Two bottle bombs exploded beneath a police traffic booth on Wireless intersection beneath the Thai-Belgian flyover and on Rama IV road.

Several gunshots were fired shortly after the explosions near a bunker of soldiers giving protection to protesters at the park.

After the gunshot and explosion died down, soldiers at the bumker and other places nearby came out to inspect the scene of explosions with the PDRC security guards.

One unexploded bottle bomb was found on the middle of the Rama IV road.

Old car tires were used to guard the unexploded bottle bomb and traffic on Rama IV was ordered closed for safety reason. The Gate 2 of the Lumphini subway station was also closed for safety reason.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) police were called in to detonate the bottle bomb.

According to EOD police, the bottle bomb which landed 10 meters from the bunker of soldiers was tied with electric tape and its fuse was lit. However the fuse went out before it hit the ground and did not explode.

But two bombs went off behind the traffic police booth on Wireless intersection, and another opposite the booth on Rama IV road.

Lumphini police said a teenage gang of 6-7 motorcycles came near the security check-points of the PDRC guards at the Thai-Belgian bridge at about 2.00 a.m. Wednesday. They insisted to cross the bridge but was prohibited by the guards.

They returned again, now hurling bottle and firecracker bombs at the guards and gunshots were also fired.

Police said they could not check video footage from CCTV cameras near the scene because their cables were cut off.

Heavy traffic jams was reported on Rama IV road for a few hours while EOD police were checking and detonating the bottle bomb, and inspect other unexploded bombs at the area before opening the road to traffic at 8 a.m.

Someone is supplying , some one cut the CCTV cables ,someone needs to be brought back to earth and what's the bet that all high ranking police and military know or have heard a whisper who that someone is.

Can't the army keep a closer track of all its grenades?

Is it too soon to start pointing the finger at those pesky Belgians?

A lot of them are Chinese made grenades that are not used by the Thai military. They only use American grenades but these are also available in Cambodia. Many are old military stock that escaped decommissioning in Thailand or Cambodia and may have deteriorated. A lot also mercifully have the pins taped up without any attempt to pull them. I suspect that the throwers are often too frightened to pull the pins due to the justifiable fear of inadvertently becoming suicide bombers. Unexploded 40mm grenades fired from M79 grenade launchers may not have been loaded correctly to detonate them. I hope that the level of successful firings doesn't improve because there are sure as hell going to be a lot more grenades fired and possibly RPGs mortars, car bombs etc, as Big T gets more and more grumpy over in Dubai.

How does the Nation know they were teens? How does anyone know who did this? If a teen did this then the teen was paid to do it.

First you query the details, 'how do they know'.

Then you make a statement 'If a teen did this then the teen was paid to do it.' So how do you know that if teens did it it automatically categorically means they were paid? How do you know?

Believe it's called eye witnesses.

Score I think it's a more a question of me knowing a lot of Thai teens. They don't really have a concept of any sort of political awareness. However; if you toss a few baht at them they become willing to do most anything. It's better and pays more than having a regular job. Why would a teen do this for free Score?

Has anyone checked that these non exploding grenades are not in fact just rocks?

Its the government controlled police who is pro red shirts who does the checking.. i doubt it would say grenade if tossed at yellows if it was not. I would not even be supprised if a grenade was thrown but the police said fire cracker. But other way around.. not likely.. unless of course red targets.

Now if the Army posts still out there can not stop these attempts during the SOE. Then why is Chalerm stating the bunkers will have to be removed as soon as the ISA is invoked. This sounds like a invitation to really start the violence flowing. Since Chalerms only agenda has been to go after PDRC actions its an open invitation for the UDD hardliners to carry out their threats.

really maybe only teenagers, now are school holidays, teens are bored, no trill now,
the stupid bloody schoolfights – school A against school B - has stopped due school holidays, some drugs and here we go.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
I fear on another occasion maybe some attacked people shot back then.
It is incredible that in a big city like Bangkok here everybody simply can fire a weapon unseen.
Did the police here do not have walky talkys or policeradio?
There are not so many directions where 6-7 motorcycles can go from Lumpini bridge.
Sleeping all policemen?

Perhaps you are correct. I could not say for sure because for the most part of the last few months the PDRC has been peaceful. They are not out making physical threats and for some odd?? reason the UDD or RED protest sites never seem to get grenades thrown into them or random shots fired at them with drive by shootings. And please dont assume the shots at jatuporns home was done by the PDRC when it is well known he is disliked by so many.

It is obvious that the unexploded ordinance, was never meant to explode. Just threats.
