Deadly find in pond

3-20-2014-11-51-58-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A dozen of mortar shells were retrieved from a sand pond in Phanat Nikhom district of Chonburi today.

The finding of the M 60 and M 81 motar shells came after the police were alerted by a village headman.

The headman, Prachum Chumchan, told Phanat Nikhom police that his relative Prasert Chumnan netted a mortar shell while he was fishing at a pond in Village Group 4 of Tambon Sra Siliem in Phanat Nikhom.

Police arrived to inspect the pond and then conducted a search at the bottom.

Ten more mortar shells concealed in neatly concealed greased box were recovered from the pond. They expected to find more shells.

All the mortar shells are live.

Investigation showed that the motor shells were dumped into the pond two months ago by unknown people.

Move over Sherlock. Case closed

Costas and dinom have within minutes found the culprits.

Amazing!

They are probably far more accurate in their predictions than whoever the Police are told to implicate, I mean arrest.

only one man has been saying that they are building up their arsenal so it is pretty obvious who these belong to, wonder if kotee will organize a visit to the headman for revealing this stash as he obviously isnt a red supporter. Only a definite terrorist element would be stashing thes types of weapons as they are designed for mass killing from long range and not hand to hand combat that the reds are to cowardly to do.

In most police investigations they look for people with a history, opportunity and motive. Costas and dinom may be ahead of the locals on this.

And with no evidence, folks online are making all kinds of accusations about who is responsible for storing or dumping the shells in the water.

It's obvously the CIA. Time for a new suspect.

I just want to know how they determined the ammo was put there 2 months ago (by unknown persons).

Have you ever been to the small places in Thailand ?

The locals know very well when strangers are in their area, even though they don't know who they are they will know someone was there and comment on it among themselves, and remember when it was.

Even if those who put these weapons were not seen (late at night possibly) they would have left marks, in this case vehicle marks, that would be noticed and noted.

I know this for a fact as I tend to get around in fairly remote places and people there notice me and remember me should I go back, as I often do.

Yeah, and that man isn't necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed.

I would be more worried about those who talk less, or those who listen to him and get going.

Could also belong to the seller, not end user.

No shortage of nutters in this country.

Unless I missed something, they found only shells so far. Without the mortar itself....one could set them up as a makeshift bomb (but there are easier, less conspicuous ways to do that), or even craft a makeshift mortar (which is quite risky to use).

Stop assuming the rounds were going to be fired from a mortar tube, these shells are useless without the fuzes..

Stop thinking these are simple terrorists weapons as well, to use a mortar accurately and effectively you need to know how to use them, these are specialised support weapons, in all British Infantry Battalions, very different from the old hand carried 52mm mortar, and take a considerable amount of training to use as well.. These mortars need to fire a few rounds first to bed the base plate in.. then you need to be an MFC (Mortar Fire Controller) to start the calculations, and then you need a Forward Observer to relay the impacts so that the MFC can make the adjustments onto the target.. not the weapon of simple terrorists by any measures!!

Start thinking along the lines of IED's and you might be close to their possible and potential uses ..

I could be wrong about the MFC, in that he's the forward element, and it's the Number 1 and the Number 2 on the firing line that make the adjustments. These adjustments are done on the charges as well as the sights, adding/removing the charges to increase/decrease the range. without the MFC's watching the fall of shot, they're not really that accurate, you need to know what you're doing with this type of weapon.

I know the 40mm M79 and I also know that the age of a greased box can be easily measured by looking at the level of solubility of the grease, in water, it loses solvents and also becomes partially hydrolysed. That will tell you how long it has been down there. So there are no surprises that they worked that out. what I am really interested in is how Chumnan Prasert who alerted the headman actually managed to bring one up in a fishing net if the box was found sealed, greased and buried in sand. This will make for interesting stories

He netted a loose one and police divers found the rest.

For some reason, I don't think that's how they determined the time frame as 2 months ago. Could be but I tend to go along with the investigative technique mentioned earlier, goes something like this:

Headman to police: Guy found this in the pond over there (pointing at mortar).

Police: Wonder how long it's been down there?

Headman: Dunno, but a friend of my mate said he saw some guys he didn't know, hanging around there about 2 months ago.

Police: Yep, that's gotta be the ones who dunnit.

That's the problem with the Suthep lovers, if the raining season starts to early or to late they will always blame the man in Dubai .
