Quite urgent Ownership Transfer/Green Book question ..

Me:

When I went the agency route buying a 2nd-hand 2011 CBR 150 last year, the fee was 3000baht.

When I went directly to DLT, for transfer of 2nd-hand 2011CBR 250 last week, the fee was 300baht.

Speedtripler : "3k to let someone else fill in your form or 300 to fill it in yourself ?"

Yup. Cheat me once...ouch! ; cheat me twice...unlikely.

Turkleton blogged:

That's what I said, in my case Chonburi, even if I stay in Pattaya and we have an own DLT too.

But it is NOT possible, to keep the plates from another province.

You have to change both, name and plate!

And this means three visits!

Fact...................

Well, I live in Pattaya and have greenbooks in my name for 5 vehicles:

1. The car has Buriram plates

2. The Nouvo has Bangkok plate

3. The Raider has Chiang Mai plate

4. The 150 CBR has Surat Thani plate

5. The CBR 250 has Pattaya plate.

No problems.

And THAT is a FACT, Jack

1. The car has Buriram plates

You bought it and changed names in Buriram ?

Bought new from dealer. They mailed blue-book & plates @~3months

2. The Nouvo has Bangkok plate

You bought it and changed names in Bangkok ?

Yes.

3. The Raider has Chiang Mai plate

You bought it and changed names in Chaing Mai ?

Yes.

4. The 150 CBR has Surat Thani plate

You bought it and changed names in Surat Thani ?

Yes.

5. The CBR 250 has Pattaya plate.

You bought it and changed names in Pattaya ?

Yes.

Turkleton is saying for example if you had bought that Raider with a Chaing Mai plate in Pattaya

you would either have had to go to Chaing Mai to change the name ( keep Chaing Mai plate )

or go to the Chonburi DLT ( not the one near to Regents School the one 60 KM from Pattaya ) at least twice

maybe 3 times to change the name ( they insist you get a Chonburi Plate too )

What Turk blogged: But it is NOT possible, to keep the plates from another province.

It IS possible. I've never been to Chonburi DLT.

I recently sold a Wave with BKK plate to a friend in Pattaya.

We used one of the agency stands across from DLT (Reagents).

They (agents) mailed him the green-book ~10 days later.

Cost him B3100.

Same BKK plate though!

I sold a Nouvo with Chiang Mai plates to a Pattaya guy.

He used his agent on Sukumvit near McDonalds.

Cost him ~B3100, but he got Pattaya plates.

If you used an "agent" then I suppose anything is possible if they have the right connections.

I'm guessing all the local agents have about the same 'connections.'

They do it by mail or courier, methinks.

Clear as mud, right?

Not possible if you do it yourself.

Its clear to me that if you buy a bike/car with plates from another province and want to do the name change yourself

without involving an "agent" that it can be a a time consuming and frustrating task.

I know because I've done it 3 times..yes I should have learned my lesson after the first one.

Clearly, transfer in originating province it is doable in my experience.

Alternately, maybe by mail to the originating provence DLT?

Not possible to do it sans agent & in Pattaya (@Regents)?

With these caveats, you are, IMO, correct.

However, maybe it is possible to handle it through the mail/courier to Chonburi as the agents seem to do, if one knows how.

Do these 'agents' have some special permit, or are they merely savvy?

Likely fluency in Thai would be crucial.

Maybe readers with Thai friend or spouse could ask him/her to call Chonburi DLT and ask.

Thought provoking thread, for sure !

it is actually possible sometimes ,you can chnage the name in the green book and leave the plate and registration wherever it was previously registered or you can get it registered in your own province for convenience

the lady in chonburi DLT was very nice and she told me i could either keep the pattaya plate or get a new one for bkk

maybe i was lucky and caught her in a good mood ............ive dealt with some miserable staff in dlts as well over the years

Its always possible to change the name but leave the plate in original province if you do the name change in that province.

As you had a Chonburi plate and where at the Chonburi DLT of course you could have changed the name and kept the plate

but if you had wanted a BKK plate you would of had to go to the main DLT in Bangkok and

step 1 inform them that you want to " move " the bike to a new province.

step 2 change name in green book.

step 3 pick up the new number plates.

These 3 steps very often will mean 3 visits to the DLT they want to see the bike and inspect the Chassis / Engine numbers

The "agents" have contacts at the DLT and can get the rules bent and / or smooth over the whole process thats why you pay them.

Here is a very good write up on the procedure by MaxwellsDemon

Absolutely correct. (except that you get the plates at step 2 and pick up book at 3 - in Chonburi, but might be different at other DLT's)

That's exactly that, what I've written before.

There are some DLT's, where two visits are enough, but unfortunately not Chonburi and Bangkok, even for "agents".

It seems, that most people have only half read the posts (at best).

The "agents" have contacts at the DLT and can get the rules bent and.....

The biggest advantage, as an "agent" is: They don't have to show the bike/car at the DLT!

The frame number on masking tape is sufficient for the whole procedure.

But they have to pay a "fee" for that privilege though whistling.gif

Turk,

On transferring out of town GB to Pattaya,

for a falang on his own would this be possible:

Take bike to main Chonburi DLT with paperwork and get it physically inspected, pay, etc.

Then make a return to CB trip later and pick up both new plate & GB at once?

If possible, any idea what this would cost and what pitfalls might accrue?

Oh... if GB was in my name already, but from different Provence, would Cert of Residence still be needed?

Thanks....xblink.png.pagespeed.ic.AQgCnSOpp_.png ....facepalm.gif

It's not very difficult if you paperwork is complete.

But you will need somebody, who can read/write Thai.

The needed documents at the DLT are "Thai-only"

And not to forget, almost all employees at the DLT Chonburi don't speak English!

visit 1: No bike needed, only paperwork.

visit 2: You have to show the bike and you can pick up the new plates and tax sticker.

visit 3: pick up the GB

No, not possible, even for "agents".

Yes, independent if the bike was in your name before or not.
