CHIANG MAI: -- Chiang Mai police are now getting tough with people displaying of banners and posters inciting violence, instigating unrest and criticizing institutions on pedestrian overpasses, flyovers and at interchanges in this northern tourist city with instruction to remove all of them immediately.

The tough action was issued by Pol Lt-Gen Suthep Dechraksa, commissioner of the Fifth Region Provincial Police Command to all police commanders in the upper northern region advising all police to remove these illegal posters and banners which were displayed quietly on pedestrian overpasses, flyovers, and at interchanges.

He instructed the police to also take legal action against those responsible for the displaying of these posters and banners.

He also said that any person or business operator wanting to display poster and banners at public places should seek permission from relevant government agencies before hand.

Yesterday Chiang Mai police commander Pol Maj-Gen Krich Kittilue ordered Mae Ping police to remove a Reds banner displayed at Don Chan interchange in Muang district and to find the persons responsible for legal action.

The banner carried the message of the so-called Sor Por Por Lanna group.

It is, after all, Chain Mai -the Prime Minister's home town.

You would think that an organization like Thai PBS would encourage their writers to use a spelling checker even if they can't afford to pass copy by an editor first.

The caretaker pm's home town is not Chian Mai it is Chiang Mai. But leaving little things out like caretaker in the title seems common with some posters.

Freedom of speech where are you?

Well I rather doubt that "Incitement to violence" is covered under the term "Freedom Of Speech" if you know of a country where you are permitted to incite violence, please, by all means, go and live there.

Freedom of speech where are you?

In which country is inciting violence and instigating unrest protected under the freedom of speech!

How about those "inciting violence and instigating unrest" by blocking streets, cause trafficjams, hold hate speeches, even cut power and watersupplies and so on...?? Compare that to the few Banners just disturb the eyes of some.. are peanuts...

Excellent job!! It is not only instigating violence it more or less incites sedition. Now can we also remove all those illegal red flags to signal their secret meetings, where they plot their bomb and grenade attacks on innocent people? The North has been harrassed by these people. Any other sound or voice will be silenced by these brown shirts, ah sorry slip of the tongue, red shirts. Eventhough 40% up North voted for the Democrats, they can t even have a political meeting here since 8 years due to threats by the red brigades. No one dares to speak up for fear of repercussions. So where is THAT freedom of speech gone?

Not on pedestrian overpasses, flyovers, and at interchanges it seems. The same would most likely apply in other countries I would quess.

When are the cops going to do anything about suthep and his thugs and with all the arrest warrents on them????????????????????????

I am afraid all those warrants will not stand up in court, or even will be handled seriously by the office of the public prosecutor.

And most of the policemen know very well those warrant can not be taken seriously.

That said, I guess thuggery is more the line for the UDD,

As shown on a regular basis in th past, and present.

Did I say they were OK or acceptable? One crime not being punished is not a reason to not prosecute the next - it is not an excuse to say , "We'll they did it and got away with it - so we should be able to also!". Ideally every crime should be prosecuted - one not should never make it a non-crime there on! Poor argument!

Strangely enough , Bangkok is not a country - it is part of this one (in case that escaped you) therefore, as they seem to be attempting to prosecute for said crimes, this country DOES NOT accept :" inciting violence and instigating unrest protected under the freedom of speech".

Yes, prosecuting hate speech should be non-partisan - and yes those in PDRC that do likewise should also feel the weight of the law (such that it is here) - as said countless times, failure to prosecute a crime does not stop it being a crime in the future.
