Indonesia-bound Thai tanker believed hijacked

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31, 2014 (AFP) - A Thai tanker is thought to have been hijacked on its way from Singapore to Indonesia, the International Maritime Bureau said Saturday, following a number of pirate attacks in Southeast Asian waters.

The diesel oil tanker MT Orapin 4, with 14 crew aboard, lost contact with its owner after departing the city-state on Tuesday, IMB's Kuala Lumpur-based Piracy Reporting Centre said.

It was heading to Pontianak on Indonesia's Kalimantan.

"It's a possible hijacking," the centre's head Noel Choong told AFP, adding that pirates recently had attacked a number of vessels in the area, usually to siphon off cargo.

The centre urged other vessels to keep a look-out for the missing tanker.

In April, heavily-armed pirates boarded another Thailand-owned tanker off the eastern coast of Malaysia, injuring the captain and stealing diesel fuel from its cargo.

In the same month, pirates also boarded a Singapore-managed tanker in the nearby Strait of

Malacca, an important shipping lane, kidnapping three Indonesian crew and stealing some of the diesel fuel.

January to March saw 23 actual or attempted attacks in Southeast Asian waters, mainly off Indonesia, according to IMB.

I see nothing wrong with it (if you don't detect sarcasm or cynicism, which is only how you read it). It WOULD be good to see the navy in real action.

Find the tanker and you may find MH 370.wink.png

You'd think the navy boys would be dying to see a bit of action before they retire.

I wonder if that sub is seaworthy yet?

Can you not, for God's sake, stop these malicious statements. If any of us, as a guest, is not happy here, we are all free to go1

It seemed like a harmless joke to me. What's up with the hysteria?

How does one go about stealing diesel oil....and why?

  • Popular Post

How, It is very simple.....Not rocket science........... Open an inspection hatch, (yes they have them)....put one end of a long hose into the fuel oil and put the other end into a tank/barrels on a small vessel alongside............Make sure the up-take hose is a lot higher then the out let hose and the flow will be very high and fast, dependent on height in and height out.

I really can not stand that term "guest".....how often do you call immigrants/visitors "guests" in your own country?

Just sounds so pompous!

What? What is malicious about pointing out the fact that the Thai armed forces main recent experience is domestic?

Is that not a plain truth.

By the way, I voted with my feet a few months back after 18 years. Next you will take that extremely mature view that if you dont live in Thailand you can't comment.

Well having seen more of rural Thailand in my first 6 months in working and( ongoing for nearly a decade), I think I am more informed than most retirees or tourist or bangkok bound expats.

I've forgotten more than most will ever see. Throw in a stint as a consular rep up country leading me to deal with governors and police, and local govt quite closely, I think I reserve me right to comment thank you very much.

Meow ladies lets stop the Cat Fight i saw the funny side

better close the site then since it will be very silent here ...

I thought that the Malacca Straight was well patrolled these days ?

It is....by Pirates

what can we do to add conflict to Thailand's troubles?

Let's hijack one of their ships.

and this headline:

Australia reduces engagement with Thai military

Coincidence? For some reason I think not.

Could send in the Thai Navy...if you could pry them away from hunting for defaming news articles...

Alien is much better and accurate

This sounds more like a robbery, common occurrence in that part of the world. No connection with the highjacking/ransom piracy associated with the Somali basin and Gulf of Aden.

They got pie eating rats that hijack ships? Amazing what will they think of next? And how do you jack a ship? Just curious. Yo ho ho and soi Cowboy.cheesy.gif

yeah, can someone explain the post above, I mean how to they take it ?

Put a plastic pipe in the tank and suck till you have a mouth full of diesel. Then hold the extremely lower and it will keep flowing. Never had a motorbike?
