Farang Tantrum about 20 Baht Overcharge...

Last night we were at a food court.

In front of us a farang gentleman ordered some noodle soup. He spoke no Thai and the woman spoke no English. The order was done by the gentleman nodding and pointing at the menu and asking in English for the ‘large bowl’. The Thai food woman was looking at him with a puzzled face and asking him questions in Thai

The Man handed over his card, had the amount debited and received his card and receipt back.

He studied his receipt with a frown, then holding it high up in the air, he started berating the shocked woman about how she had overcharged him! Not just any overcharge mind you, the criminal overcharge of 20 baht! The noodles he wanted were 35 baht and she was charging him 55 baht!

The guy was using his finger, pointing at the woman, his face going red, getting louder and louder. Other food stalls and customers were looking over at the scene he was creating.

It was clear to me the guy wanted the 35 Baht noodles and he had been charged for (and would have received) the 55 baht noodles, so no rip off, just a miscommunication.

After about one minute, enough was enough, I couldn’t listen to him anymore. I was hungry and just wanted some noodles. I took 100 Baht from my pocket. With a dismissive wave I said:

“This is for your noodles, now F#*# off!”.

I am a big guy and not many people argue with me. He was momentarily stunned and thought about saying something to me, but instead he scuttled away with the 00 baht.

20 Baht! I still can’t believe it.

"I still can’t believe it."

Neither can I...

TGIF ...

By the way OP ... can you stand in line behind me next time ... I could use a loan.

True Story ... maybe.

Exaggerated Story ... more likely.

Entertaining to read ... thumbsup.gif

We need more guys like the OP ... he's fun to read.

OH ... beats the Bar Girl did me wrong threads.

.

He probably needed the money for his baht bus ride home.

Songthaew ... all this baht bus malarkey ... wrong descriptor.

... but point taken.

I have my doubts that a noodle vendor would except a debit card, Great story though.

He paid for noodles with 'a card'? Difficult to believe. I can't even use my card in BigC if the sum is under ฿1000.- .

No they all do as do the street stalls and buses and..............................................whistling.gif

Guess you've never really eaten in a food court.

You first go to a booth which gives you a "kinda" debit card for 100 baht, 200 baht ....whatever you give them. Then when you buy food at one of the vendors you give them the debit card (which, by the way, is only good in the food court) and they deduct the price of the meal.

If there is a credit still left on the card then you go back to the booth and collect your balance

Great story!!!

The OP never mentioned a credit / debit card.

The transaction was not made with a credit / debit card .

The majority of food courts in shopping malls do not accept cash.

So you buy credit at a booth and they give you a food court card with the said credit on.

Glad to see you are starting to fit in Dek Noi. Good Post.

What a Dil, 55 for a large bowl in a food court seems about right, standard bowl normally 35

Three thousand two hundred and fourteen posts, and never been to a foodcourt in Thailand where you buy a prepaid card to purchase food.

I'm guessing you don't get out too much? whistling.gif

I've seen this type before. What a disgrace. Well done OP.

Something like this?

Regional variances of course.

.

To argue over 20 baht is quite bad but to argue and not speak the language is taking the pish.

Actually the bigger towns do have what folks call the Baht Bus

Of course Songthaew/Lor Deng is always available in all towns

Mr. cooked must be feeling pretty silly making that statement. Or maybe he still doesn't get it.

Gentlemen, what we have here is a 'Misapprehension-Cluster'!!

In Foodcourts you purchase a debit/coupon card and then purchase your food from your desired vendor with the card.

I would have punched him in the face and take his card.

Nice, I'd like to see that ?

Cheap food and entertainment.....what more could a man ask for !

I would have joined him and yelled at the lady and then proceeded to throw noodles everywhere.
