Interior Minister launches World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims activities

BANGKOK, 16 November 2014 (NNT) – The Minister of Interior launched the activities for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims today, aiming to reduce the rate of fatalities in road accidents.

The Minister of Interior Gen. Anupong Paochinda, Acting Executive Director of the Road Safety Directing Center (RSDC), presided over the opening ceremony of the 2014 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims event today in front of the United Nations building in Bangkok.

According to the RSDC executive director, each year Thailand experiences about 44,000 fatalities from road accidents. The government has been trying to reduce this number down to 10 fatalities per 100,000 people.

The government has issued five campaigning measures to reduce road accidents, namely the management, the road safety campaign, the vehicle safety campaign, the safe driver campaign, and the accident response plan.

These measures aim to make drivers more aware of the damage and pain caused in road accidents that will help create a driving culture which emphasizes safety, said the RSDC executive director.

For this event, the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has given a message on the aim of creating the awareness of road safety in youth and children, as well as showing condolences to the victims that have experienced road accident and losses in their families.

White orchids were laid on the ground and white balloons were set afloat as a remembrance ceremony to the victims of road accidents in this event.

All very sweet, with the White Orchids and White Baloons.

But Educate people in how to drive,

Don't let children drive Motorbikes..

And tell the Police to,crackdown on speedsters and offenders..

How's that for starters....

The world will run out of fossil fuels before!!coffee1.gif

Enforce laws for people who drink drive, talking and texting while driving, speeding, driving dangerously through arrogance or stupidity, all passengers not wearing a seatbelt, having 16 passengers in the back of a flat bed pickup.

To do all of this you would have to make this entire country actually give a flying eff and that is exactly what they are not good at. As usual no action to prevent the cause of the problem, let them just all be completely surprised and shocked at how this could have all happened.

"The government has issued five campaigning measures to reduce road accidents, namely the management, the road safety campaign, the vehicle safety campaign, the safe driver campaign, and the accident response plan."

But nothing about having the RTP do their job properly and uphold road rules!

Heads in the sand!!

Yes we drove back from Bangkok to Ayutthaya today, it appeared that most drivers were driving in an act or remembrance, its just a shame they weren't remembering how to drive

RIP to those who have lost their lives to this unnecessary carnage

"each year Thailand experiences about 44,000 fatalities from road accidents.".........According to the RSDC executive director, Anupong

"Each year, he said an estimated of 14,000 were killed"...........Also from Anupong in the latter article.

The top figure sounds more accurate.....44,000......it's a huge number by any countries standard.......a shame on Thailand!.....and most of these fatalities would probably have been so simple to avoid

Just to put into context. 44,000?, that's about the same as 120 or so jumbo jet crashes a year with no survivors.

Why I am as doubtful as most posters about any success at present I do have a small ggripe.

That is, here in and around Pattaya darkside, how many farangs ride with no crash helmets, and often no shirts. We can't preach to them if we are setting a bad example. I politely told one guy at the lights while we were waiting, that a cop might do him for having no shirt as well as no helmet. He told me to p... off> Oh well.

I suppose you have to show off your tattoo's.

Did I miss something or is the "World Day of Remembrance" only here in Thailand??? As bad as the Americans with their World Seriesrolleyes.gif

The American World Series has no relationship to the WDofR, except in the minds of those who can add two and two and get five.

Another excuse to have a show for the Authorities, when they really need to sort out the criminal neglect shown to the victims in the form of insufficient / non existant laws and law enforcement.

I am sure the families of those mown down by a drunk, a pleb high on Yaba, or a Hi-So who knows he can litterally get away with murder will be celebrating - not

The WHO numbers are at 26.000 for 2013.
