Interior Minister launches World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims activities

BANGKOK, 16 November 2014 (NNT) – The Minister of Interior launched the activities for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims today, aiming to reduce the rate of fatalities in road accidents.

The Minister of Interior Gen. Anupong Paochinda, Acting Executive Director of the Road Safety Directing Center (RSDC), presided over the opening ceremony of the 2014 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims event today in front of the United Nations building in Bangkok.

According to the RSDC executive director, each year Thailand experiences about 44,000 fatalities from road accidents. The government has been trying to reduce this number down to 10 fatalities per 100,000 people.

The government has issued five campaigning measures to reduce road accidents, namely the management, the road safety campaign, the vehicle safety campaign, the safe driver campaign, and the accident response plan.

These measures aim to make drivers more aware of the damage and pain caused in road accidents that will help create a driving culture which emphasizes safety, said the RSDC executive director.

For this event, the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has given a message on the aim of creating the awareness of road safety in youth and children, as well as showing condolences to the victims that have experienced road accident and losses in their families.

White orchids were laid on the ground and white balloons were set afloat as a remembrance ceremony to the victims of road accidents in this event.

All very sweet, with the White Orchids and White Baloons.

But Educate people in how to drive,

Don't let children drive Motorbikes..

And tell the Police to,crackdown on speedsters and offenders..

How's that for starters....

Enforce laws for people who drink drive, talking and texting while driving, speeding, driving dangerously through arrogance or stupidity, all passengers not wearing a seatbelt, having 16 passengers in the back of a flat bed pickup.

To do all of this you would have to make this entire country actually give a flying eff and that is exactly what they are not good at. As usual no action to prevent the cause of the problem, let them just all be completely surprised and shocked at how this could have all happened.

What can possibly go wrong??whistling.gifpost-218648-0-52114100-1416123309_thumb.post-218648-0-02019100-1416123377_thumb.post-218648-0-09039400-1416123418_thumb.

With the rich and power-influential-ful off the charts, I guess,....

Good luck with that!

As per above comments - this is not hard. Mostly, have laws and enforce them. In other words respect the rule of law, something though that may be harder in late 2014 Thailand when the example from the top is so poor.

"The government has issued five campaigning measures to reduce road accidents, namely the management, the road safety campaign, the vehicle safety campaign, the safe driver campaign, and the accident response plan."

But nothing about having the RTP do their job properly and uphold road rules!

Heads in the sand!!

Yes we drove back from Bangkok to Ayutthaya today, it appeared that most drivers were driving in an act or remembrance, its just a shame they weren't remembering how to drive

RIP to those who have lost their lives to this unnecessary carnage

Did I miss something or is the "World Day of Remembrance" only here in Thailand??? As bad as the Americans with their World Seriesrolleyes.gif

Yes they remember the dead and will do nothing to prevent future accidents. All for show but no substance an zero prevention

I'll remember four people today, but only one of them deserves 'remembrance.'

1. Pol Lt Col Pannapon Nammuang: he was the police officer who intentionally tried to cover up a vehicular homicide by falsely arresting...

2. Suwes Hom-ubon: the scapegoat family driver of the Yoovidhaya family for killing...

3. Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian Klanprasert: the police officer who was struck and dragged 200 meters to death by...

4. Vorayudh Yoovidhaya: Redbull heir who was high on cocaine when he struck and dragged Wichian Klanprasert, later fleeing the scene, then fleeing to Singapore for a stint, but never showing up to his arraignments.

As usual, all talk, but no action.

How about enforcing the traffic laws.

How about actually arresting and prosecuting the likes of the Red Bull hiso.

How about recinding everyone's driver license and make everyone requalify by actually passing a written exam and road test.

If they were serious about doing something, they could. But talk is better, no one gets offended or loses face. Mai pen rai.

Brave words, but the whole of society would have to change! So just words.

"each year Thailand experiences about 44,000 fatalities from road accidents.".........According to the RSDC executive director, Anupong

"Each year, he said an estimated of 14,000 were killed"...........Also from Anupong in the latter article.

The top figure sounds more accurate.....44,000......it's a huge number by any countries standard.......a shame on Thailand!.....and most of these fatalities would probably have been so simple to avoid

Just to put into context. 44,000?, that's about the same as 120 or so jumbo jet crashes a year with no survivors.

Why I am as doubtful as most posters about any success at present I do have a small ggripe.

That is, here in and around Pattaya darkside, how many farangs ride with no crash helmets, and often no shirts. We can't preach to them if we are setting a bad example. I politely told one guy at the lights while we were waiting, that a cop might do him for having no shirt as well as no helmet. He told me to p... off> Oh well.

I suppose you have to show off your tattoo's.

The American World Series has no relationship to the WDofR, except in the minds of those who can add two and two and get five.

Does "road traffic victim" in Thailand include hit and run cop killing around Sukhumvit by an allegedly high and drunk sports car driver according to extensive Thai news reports at the time?

Another excuse to have a show for the Authorities, when they really need to sort out the criminal neglect shown to the victims in the form of insufficient / non existant laws and law enforcement.

I am sure the families of those mown down by a drunk, a pleb high on Yaba, or a Hi-So who knows he can litterally get away with murder will be celebrating - not

is it songkran already? for their empty promisses

The WHO numbers are at 26.000 for 2013.
