American questioned over parcels of baby parts, then released

BANGKOK: -- Police Sunday interrogated an American who attempted to send parcels of baby parts to his friend in the United States.

Metropolitan Police Division 5 Deputy Commander Pol Col Chumpol Pumpuang said the man was released after he said he bought the parts from a night market in Thonburi.

DHL officials detected the baby parts when they x-rayed the parcel Saturday. Chumpol said police suspected the parts were stolen from a medical school.

is it not a crime?

It may not be a crime, here, but if that parcel gets into the US, it will be. I hope customs was alerted on the US end.

The body parts of several babies have been found in a parcel destined for the United States, Thai police said Sunday.

A baby's head, several feet and "sheets of skin" -- including one taken from an adult and bearing a large tattoo -- were discovered Saturday after staff at a Bangkok parcel company scanned the package.

"They were not from one body but were in small pieces," Police Major General Chawalit Prasopsin told AFP on Sunday.

"They have been sent for forensic examination to confirm if they were from babies who died after delivery or in the womb," Chawalit said.

The parts were found preserved in containers filled with formaldehyde solution, leading Chawalit to speculate they could be for "a collection or for educational purposes".

Police said they are investigating but did not reveal further details of where the packaged was addressed to in the US.

Local media reported it was destined for an address in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2012 Thai police discovered six human foetuses which had been roasted and covered in gold leaf as part of an apparent black magic ritual.

The grisly discovery was made in the luggage of a British citizen of Taiwanese origin. They were due to be sent to Taiwan.

In Thai black magic rituals, also observed among some Chinese communities, preserved foetuses are believed to bring good fortune to the owner and are often kept in shrines within homes or businesses.

Thanks for that answer... LB.... So apparently, more than just "baby" parts....

All I can say is... GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!

I sure hope someone wasn't trying to do the Frankenstein thing all over again in modern times... blink.png

Disgusting and symbolic of the fact that people have no bottom level to which they will go to get money.

Rest assured if the police bothered to investigate this, the parts would not have been obtained with the permission of the parent/s.

There is no law in USA prohibiting imports of such stuff?

I think a qualified guess would be: American of Chinese descent!!

Exactly the situation at my wifes family home. The family came to Thailand to escape the Chinese Civil War and at the center of the house is a shrine with a small miscarried male foetus. It belonged to one of wifeys grandmothers and is referred to by all the family as 'magic uncle'.

He is often asked to bring the family good luck.

Clearly didn't work. She married you!! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Thailand Post is recommended for body parts. They never X-ray them and are much cheaper than DHL.

Don't the Catholics keep bits of dead saints as holy relics? Don't they have rituals to transform wine and bread into someone's blood and body and then consume it with great ceremony?

Oooooh, gross!!!

Night market in Thonburi, eh? Gotta use that one next time they find smack in my suitcase.

We aren't any better in Europe. Tax evasion punishable with up to 10 years jail. Murder and rape only gets to 4-6 months for first time offenders...

Go figure

This could be perfectly legal or criminal. There's a large legal market for body parts for medical research in the US. I'm surprised you Euros don't know anything about it, but that's why your countries lag in medicinal innovation. http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/the-billion-dollar-body-parts-industry-medical-research-alongside-greed-and-corruption-2/

Seems to me that the person concerned with trying to ship the baby parts to the U.S.A. is indeed in need of some serious help from a mental health expert. Likewise the recipient(s) of said body parts.

The assumption that the body parts were stolen should have been enough of a reason to hold the buyer of the parts until the truth of his story can be or was verified.

The market in question should be inspected with the buyer at hand to identify the stallholder who sold him the ''merchandise,'' if said merchandise was stolen more questions need answering as to the source of these body parts and inded just how old these body parts were or are.

Yet again we see the professional incompetence of the Thai police farce force in its best light

I guess one might glean from this that a good alibi, should one be needed to offer Thai police, MIGHT BE to mention the night market at Thonburi. Seemed to work for him!

Seems like it is a better business idea (legal) than selling old CD's from the garbage...

The news comes a little too late for the couple who butchered the Japanese teacher. However, the discovery of hastily put aside body parts in LOS may drastically decline after this.
