BANGKOK — On the anniversary of the military crackdown on Redshirt protesters in 2010, Thai junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha has asked media agencies to help tell the "true" story of the violence that claimed more than 90 lives.

"Media, help me. Don't throw away the evidence. I saw you taking many photographs," Gen. Prayuth said in a videotaped speech that will be aired on national television tonight. He was referring to the clashes between Redshirt demonstrators and soldiers, which started five years ago today.

"Hundreds of you reporters walked behind soldiers, you dodged the bullets with them," said Gen. Prayuth, who is considered an architect of the 2010 crackdown. "Why don’t you help me by speaking out? Okay?"

He means he wants the media to tell the "sanitized" version of events according to him. Never mind what the actual truth is.

We know what happened. Some of us saw it with our own eyes. inciting violence, burning, throwing hand grenades, and wanting"absolute victory" with no compromise. Bangkok was very patient with the thugs

The photo looks like he is Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, from the tv show Star Trek. "Captains log star date 2558, hostile anniversery meetings controlled, proof of violence needed, zulu warp speed ahead"

Why should the media help a person who sensors their work, threatens them with incarceration, threatens to shut them down, threatens to punch them in the face and threatens to execute them. I ask again why should they help him.

Yes tell the truth. The death of those 90 unarmed, peace loving soldiers slaughtered as they played guitars and sang, 'Blowing in the Wind,' is a national tragedy.

He also looks like Dr Evil, from the movie Austin Powers the Spy who Shagged Me. Also why is no one happy in his return to happiness speech?

Journalists in my opinion are never shy in reporting a good atrocity, committed by who, they care not.

The fact that here we are 5 years later may suggest that there is no story that complies with the junta's version of events.

The General may once more Huff & Puff, but those pesky journalists may for once actually be telling the truth.

Put your army uniform back on and stop acting like a tit... you don't and never will understand the political arean

I like the sarcasm but many won't understand it.

Don't forget the 90 deaths were on both sides.

That is a really strange picture.

So much for reconciliation!

Unfortunately in this version there is no Mr. Spock to guide the captain with his logical thinking and prevent him from putting his foot where his mouth is way too often smile.png

That is a really strange picture.

It is very surreal. Looks like he has to pee or he's holding back a fart.

Oh please tell me, JV, what is the actual truth?

That the reds and the blacks were shooting at the army?

That the reds were burning everything on their path?

That the reds had BKK ransomed for weeks?

I also don't agree with the army shooting back, but that had to stop somehow.

Now, as the PM wisely said, let the courts find out the truth and deliver justice to the wrongdoers.

But don't try to hide behind your little finger.....it doesn't work.

You conveniently are forgetting that in the undemocratic Thailand of today, the legislative, the executive and judiciary branches are in the hands of one man!!

With the help of Art 44, Mr P is the court!!

So now he is going to judge his own part in this tragic event. Sure it will be a fair trial.................

Just to make sure nothing can go wrong, he now orders media to give the version of the events, that puts the army (and the crackdown architect Mr P) in a better light!!

Rewriting history is the privilege of the man with the gun!!

So many of you haven't got a clue what happened... It was ugly almost beyond belief. You just spew out that same old crap about democracy and a police state, with never a mention of morons threatening to explode a propane tanker truck in the squalor of Din Daeng Flats...

No one is rewriting history here. Many of us were there. So you should be happy for us sharing the experience. Because, in the end that what is the truth... is not what you believe.

Nice to think the press could "speak out" about many things.

Maybe one day .........................?

But, most of us know the real story behind most things.

Exposing red shirt violence is surely not going to help reconcile divided Thai people. To remember the tragic day is one thing, but to relive it through photos or video is not going to help with reconcilation efforts.

Yeah it was... It was damn the city and its people. We'll destroy it and them to have our man back.

With all the stiffs sitting behind the the PM, and his wife, they sure can have a crazy Songkran party tonight. It will be rocking and no stoppin' till the sun comes up in the mornin'! rolleyes.gif

Holding back a fart is more likely as he is about to speak.

Why does he all of a sudden need the media to start providing evidence ?

Evidence for whom and for what reason? Sounds like a desperate plea, the army are free from any form of investigation as they have amnesties, so what's coming up that he seems a bit scared of?

He means he wants the media to tell the "sanitized" version of events according to him. Never mind what the actual truth is.

no there are videos which are very hard, I have seen them. But they never went mainstream because we want to make a group hug and love each other again.

That change is interesting and he could order TV to send them them if he want, but he does not.....also interesting.

Why should the media help a person who sensors their work, threatens them with incarceration, threatens to shut them down, threatens to punch them in the face and threatens to execute them. I ask again why should they help him.

Haven't you answered your own question?

Maybe, just maybe, it had something to do with, that the majority of Thai voters had enough of, over and over again, seeing their votes being voided by the judiciary and/or the army.

Violence is never a solution, but at some point most people reach their breaking point !!

Why should the media help a person who sensors their work, threatens them with incarceration, threatens to shut them down, threatens to punch them in the face and threatens to execute them. I ask again why should they help him.

Well sometimes he does toss them a banana. Their mistake was in assuming he wanted nothing in return.

So many of you haven't got a clue what happened... It was ugly almost beyond belief. You just spew out that same old crap about democracy and a police state, with never a mention of morons threatening to explode a propane tanker truck in the squalor of Din Daeng Flats...

April 12 2009, Din Daeng, Nan Lerng, red shirts torched 30 city busses, killed 2 residents and injured many, drove an LPG tanker with opened gas valve on the intersection and tried to blow it up. The reds were angry because their charasmatic leader Arisman, aka Big Mac, was arrested for storming the Asean Summit in Pattaya a day earlier. They also attacked the Prime Ministers car that day (where in the world would that be possible?).

Amazing that those critizing the coup(s) or defend the red shirts never mention these kind of events. This is not an isolated example of red terrorism, but one of many.

This country needs a cooling down period. Serious crimes need to be solved and the most important thing, in my opinion, is that Thaksin needs to serve his time and attend the still 9 other open court cases against him.

That would be the only way forward. No more impunity.
