How long does the Department of Land Transportation Accept a Residence Certificate?

I received a residence certificate today from Bangkok Division 1 Immigration. I will use it to get a International driving license from the Land Transportation office at Soi Sukhumvit 62/1 in Bangkok. My trip abroad is on May 21st and I would like to wait a while if possible before getting the license which is only valid for 1 year. Would I be safe waiting until the 1st of May in using the Residence certificate to obtain the license, or should I go before then. I looked at the Land Transportation website but couldn't find my answer. If anyone knows for sure I would appreciate you letting me know, especially if it deals with the office at Soi Sukhumvit 62/1 office. Thank you in advance.

Usually 30 days. When I got my driving licence at the Pattaya driving Licence centre in January someone was turned away cos their residence cert was about 5 weeks old.

Its easy enough to get a residence cert at immigration a couple of days before you need it

For registering ownership of cars seems different. My car was registered about 2 months after I got the cert of residence as the car dealer took their own sweet time to go get it registered

Here at Division One Immigration in Bangkok they told me I could expect the Residence Certificate in about 3 week by mail and it came in 10 days so it arrived much earlier than they said it would. This pushed my time up quite a bit as to when I planned on getting the International License. No big deal I guess I will just plan to go after the holidays the end of this coming week, or the first of the next week. Thanks for your reply.

Never realised there could be such a delay getting the cert. In Jomtien it is a breeze, you get it in about 45 minutes after entering the building

Good luck with your application for the IDL

Must be a change

When I got mine a couple of years ago, had to come back the next day to get it, 300 THB if my memory serves me correctly

I think it used to depend on how busy they were and what time of day you went - if in the afternoon always used to be next day. However last time was as Scotssing mentioned and yes 300baht.

I had to get the Affirmation of Residence from the British Embassy. I can only get a Certificate of Residency from Immigration IF I have done a 90 day report.

Thus: For those who are in and out regularly and have not needed to do a 90 day report at immigration the only options are: Affirmation of Residence from their Consulate.

I may be mistaken and rules may vary - I thought that the Affirmation of Residency was valid for 90 days.

I guess it depends where you are. When I got mine I had Non Immigrant O and the retirement extension but had only been here a few weeks so no 90 day report. I wanted to get my licence and buy a car asap. At Jomtien they were very obliging and very quick. I went in the afternoon and expected to come back the next day but they said come back in an hour and in fact it was ready before that. I have heard much more adverse reports of other Immigration offices but really cannot criticise the fellows at Jomtien

You are expected to pay a small fee and whilst theoretically it may be free I think you are whistling in the wind if you expect it to be so

I know you can get one at your Embassy or the Immigration office that you will do your 90 reports to. I have also heard of people getting them from their local police offices but I can't verify that. Most Immigration offices will require that you have done at least one 90 day report with them before they will issue it, I know that is true at the Division 1 office in Bangkok. Your best bet would probably be to ask someone who has needed one before, that you know that lives in your area. Or either call your local Police station or Immigration office or have someone call them on your behalf. You will find that different parts of the Country seem to require different things after you are here awhile. I have attached the form you need below. I also needed to give Immigration when I got mine last month a copy of my Passport front page, Visa or Extension of Stay(Which ever one is applicable), Last Entry Stamp, last Arrival Card (In my case Departure Card), last 90 Day Report and 200 baht. I also took some recent utility bills and rental receipts with me but I was not asked for them. The US Embassy charges around $50 US dollars as do the other country Embassies, that is why I use my Immigration office instead of them.

Good Luck.
