Thai Smile plane hits gangway in Chiang Mai airport



CHIANG MAI: -- A Thai Smile Airways plane was slightly damaged when one of its wings hit the Gate 5 gangway at Chiang Mai international airport this morning.

But all the 48 passengers on board Flight WE150 from Don Mueang airport were not hurt.

They all disembarked from the plane safely to the airport.

According to Chiang Mai airport official, the plane skidded as it was taxing on the taxiway to connect with the airport’s Gate 5 terminal.

The left wing of the plane hit the gangway but caused no injury to passengers inside.

The incident happened at about 9.30 am.

An investigation team will be set up to find the exact cause of the incident.

Shouldn't there be some airport crew members here guiding the plane into position? As normal safety first is not a motto anywhere in Thailand.

How on earth does an airliner approaching a gateway, moving about 2 miles an hour skid????

More attention needs to be paid to whoever writes these things to better clarify or stop writing absolute BS. Say what really happened ....... someone did make an error........ either the guy with the flags , guiding the plane in or the pilot or most probably both...... but NO ! ! ! lets don't loose face...... the plane barely moving.... skidded.... what a bunch of crapola....

It was only 'slightly damaged' so no matter, only a small dent, can be bashed out later

Skidded?

I am fairly certain there was no rain at the airport this morning, and at the speeds a plane taxis there is no conceivable way it could just skid.

It must have been a pretty serious lack of concentration, perhaps the pilot was playing on his mobile phone at the time !

It was icy, of course.

Three things (1) The Jetway or Loading Bridge not parked on the correct spot. (2) Ground Handlers with Cranium up their Tailpipe. (3) Flight Crew did not verify Loading Bridge being on correct spot.

Result, Sheet Metal Mechanics make overtime on Field Trip, and passengers miss their flight.

And how could this happen ?

Believe it or not I have skided in an airplane going about 2 knots. It was in Burnswick Naval Air Station and we were on ice. Had to shut the plane down and get a tow. Dont think they have that much ice in Chiang Mei.

I was thinking the same..... the explaination is not valid! It looked like those responsible in guiding the pilot into the bay failed to take the plane in the particular path marked on the ground fpr the particular model and hence miscalculated and hence hit the gate. Anything other than this is only speculation. Investigation team....only there to collect money from the Insurance. This is not the quick mini coach parking into a bay. This is a plane and can only move as directed from the ground by the Airport personnel. hhahahahahahaha.....

Could be that the Thai word in play is translated into English as 'skid'. Perhaps 'veered' would be better.

Chiang Mai has VDGS system, up until now I would have assumed that meant it could not clear docking until boarding bridges were in the correct position. I Guess not....and I guess hitting just above the engine meant the pilot would have passed the bridge at eye level......and pretty close too.

A roll of duct tape and a lick of paint and it will be up up and away again no problem for a Thai aircraft just a 5 minute delay, for a minor scratch like this.

If they actually skidded, the Captain was taxiing too fast, or possibly the ramp was wet or slick with spilled oil or JP fuel. But the likely cause is an inexperienced captain not paying attention, either to the ground crew which should have been directing him, or to his surroundings. 'Bashed out' by the Thai Bashing Brigade on TV forum ? I'm sure they'll have a great time, actually they're already having a great time.

While creeping into the parking slot, the planes mus-zac probably was playing that old song [adopted by this airline of course] "when you're smiling, when you're smiling, the whole world ___________with you. ..... and if you had read this story line, the fill in the blank would probably be "Laffs der azz off " with you....
