Is Win10 Upgrade lurking on your PC ?

Recommended Posts

Like most of the PC world some months ago I got the little icon on the taskbar near the clock offering a free upgrade to Win10.

I did not want to upgrade to Win10, free or not so got rid of the annoying little icon and delegated the KB3035583 update to stop M$ bugging me.

All was good until yesterday when I got big splash screen informing me that Win10 is ready to install. w00t.gif

The above window would not delete and I certainly did not want to "install'

Checking around it seems the files for Win10 install are in the hidden folders (Windows.~BT and Windows.~WS) but an easy way to get rid of any lurking Win10 files is to use this little program:- http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/2015/08/using-gwx-stopper-to-permanently-remove.html.

This is program does not install you just run it and it will get rid of anything to do with Win10 upgrade. It will not delete Win10 if already installed you'll have to try something else for that,

First I had it set to download, but install at my timing, but afterwards I opted to NOT use/download the free update to W10.

Has not bugged me (yet)

I will stay with 8.1 (or 8.x) for as long as possible

I'm actually happy for it. Was glad to get rid of the Windows 8 and 8.1 crap. At least now my computers work like computers again and not like oversized smartphones. I don't know how many times I sent MS messages reminding them that most of the world still uses normal PCs. Ones with normal screens that aren't touch sensitive so the whole touch/swipe crap was not just wasted but extremely annoying.

I've got Win 10 on 3 laptops and one desktop now and it has run surprisingly well so far. Haven't had a single BSOD since the upgrade (on this computer with Win 8.1 sometimes I'd get BSODs once every 1-2 weeks or more and sometimes 2-3 times a day, then miraculously they'd stop and then a few days or a week or so later start again).

I used to hold out upgrading Windows until I had no choice (or bought a new computer that was already upgraded). Too often they were so buggy it almost wasn't worth upgrading. Remember when Win 8 came out and was such a nuisance that stores were offering to replace Win 8 with Win 7 ?

I figured this time I may as well go for it and upgrade as soon as I could as anything had to be better than Win 8/8.1. So far I'm happy with it. I still listen to music with WinAmp, view pics with ACDSee and watch movies with VLC. Probably a lot of the "new" features are lost on me anyways as I simply don't use them.

Yes I had the same saying also that installation was free!! I went ahead and it completely buggered my whole system.I could not clear it, and had to get my local computer expert in to clear it and reinstall the existing windows. Total hassle be careful.

Did you work on the computer as it was installing? I know some guys who did. That will mess it up for you, even just hitting a couple of keys will.

Down loaded, installed and many problem on several machines. AMD and Intel based.

So did install from scratch by adjusting an registry key to enable form scratch

Win 10 runs better and has less problems

Office 2016 has problems because there are still no 64 bits language modules.

overall Windows is still far form stable and able to run smooth. there is now the 1st service pack that finally addresses the start menu issue (I hope) as well other performance issues.

Since I discovered that updates were not automatic, I now know how to do it manually.

The bonus is that most of the pre-existing glitches are now resolved.

Excellent.

I have an old Dell running W7 Pro, that apparently isnt compatible with W10. I will now be able to get rid of the nag to update it.

Vast improvement on any previous Windows in my book, and not a huge learning curve either.

I would think people would be quite comfortable moving to 10 from 7.

Why anyone would stay on 8.x instead of upgrading is beyond me.

Can't understand why anyone would want to stay with Windows8 when Windows10 is freely availiable.

Within a couple of years there will be no backup for Windows8 anyway.

l did wait for 6 months after 10 became availiable, for MSoft to iron out all the bugs though.

l have now Win10 & am very happy with it.

Not happy with my new mobile phone though, but thats another story! lol!

Daffy D,

That GWX utility were it says are Windows Update OS Update OS System Upgrade enabled, by disabling that does it "only" disable the Win 10 upgrade that being pushed or does it also disable normal Win 10 updates? I'm hoping it only stops request to download "upgrade to Win 10" type files versus normal updates such as security updates, driver updates also.

Normally, I would update all my computers (two each now) to Win 10...already did one back on 29 Jul which was day 1 of Win 10 release...it has worked fine for me on my two year old Lenovo laptop.

But my other laptop, a 8 year Toshiba is incompatible with Win 10 because of its ATI X1400 GPU which AMD/ATI will not be updating to be compatible with Win 10....it's probably more a GPU hardware issue than a driver update issue. Win 10 compatibility test even tells me that unfortunately that my Toshiba can't be upgraded to Win 10, but it still has the Get Win 10 icon and probably a bunch of downloaded Win 10 install files laying around on the hard drive just taking up space that will never be used as this Toshiba will go to its gave with Win 7 on it...Win 7 is still supported by Microsoft until early 2020 and I'm pretty sure I won't be using that old Toshiba come 2020.

Edit: Never mind...I found my answer after reading the Q&A section of the link you gave to the GWX utility. Answer is quoted below but was for Ver 1.2 of utility where apparently the latest version has changed to a Yes/No type indicators vs Enabled/Disabled.

Disable/Enable Operating System Upgrades in Windows Update (new in version 1.2)

  • If Windows is configured to allow Windows Update to automatically select the optional Upgrade to Windows 10 update, this button says "Disable..." and clicking it will restore Windows Update to its normal behavior.
  • If Windows is configured to behave normally (in other words, to only install important patches, rather than to upgrade the operating system), this button says "Enable..." and clicking it will allow Windows Update to select the Upgrade to Windows 10 update when it becomes available. (Note that Windows can do this even after you cancel your Windows 10 upgrade reservation.)

Win 10 seems to be catching on fast based on some full month Aug, Sep, and/or Oct stats since Win 10's 29 July release to the public. And I expect since the first major upgrade (a.k.a., service pack) to Win 10 was released a week or so ago that will make more people pull the free upgrade to Win 10 trigger.

Below are some stats from two different websites although they tend to significantly disagree on some of the percentages for certain operating systems....probably due to what websites are being monitored to collect the stats.

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp

Note: the Sep stats add up to pretty much 100%....but the Aug stats only add up to around 97% if my fingers punched in the right numbers to my calculator.

I'm sorry, but that's against all logic. Why would anybody want Windows 8, or 8.1?? I could understand Windows 7, but not the 8 version.

The biggest crap since WW 2.

I have to admit that I wasted two weeks of my life with the installation of one Windows 10 program, but that was before I found my ways to get it done.

If you do the setup and you don't like it, you can easily roll back to your previous system.

I've upgraded my two PC's, one at home and one I'm using at school, plus two school computers. Don't wanna go back now, I really love it.

But I had to find my own way to get things done. Windows now is not just offering to make a reservation, the updates are now immediately downloadable.

It's good to have a look first which programs will work. Please check before you upgrade what's working and what not.

I spent a rough time to sort things out, but finally won the war. That included sleepless nights, many headaches and almost a divorce. ( joking)

My wife was really mad at me that I spent a lot of more time with the thingies than with her. But all is fine now and movie time......thumbsup.giffacepalm.gifcoffee1.gif

NOVEMBER 5, 2015 9:59 AM Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10586

By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

UPDATE 11/9: Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10586 is now available to Windows Insiders in the Slow ring.

Hi everyone,

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10586 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build is really focused on bug fixes and general improvements. We’ve been loving this build in our internal rings as it is very fast and smooth, and makes a great daily driver.

Here are some things we have fixed:
  • The issue where any audio playing (like music from Groove, or videos from the Movies & TV app) gets reduced by 75% for a period of time after a notification pops up from Action Center is fixed.
  • Pressing the power button on your Surface Pro 3 should put your Surface Pro 3 to sleep instead of shutting it down.
  • We fixed an issue reported by Windows Insiders where a disksnapshot.exe command prompt window would flash randomly.
  • Windows should now remember your previous login type. For example, if you log in with a PIN – it will prompt you for a PIN next time instead of another type.
  • We fixed an issue where Tab previews in Microsoft Edge were appearing as black if the page was not scrolled to the top, and web note clippings were also appearing as black.
  • Small form-factor devices, like the Dell Venue 8 Pro, that boot with rotation or virtual mode screen size set larger than the physical screen size should no longer experience a bluescreen on upgrade.
  • Apps and games should download from the Store more reliably.
Known issues:
  • After upgrading from one Windows 10 Insider Preview build to another Insider Preview build, Skype messages and contacts will disappear from the Messaging + Skype app. You can get Skype messages and contacts back by navigating to “C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Messaging_

8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache” in File Explorer and deleting or renaming the “PrivateTransportId” file. After deleting or renaming that file, go to the Skype video app and sign out of Skype and sign back in.

  • The Insider Hub might be gone after upgrading to this build. You can get Insider Hub back by going to Settings > System > Apps & features and clicking “Manage optional features”, choosing “Add a feature” and selecting Insider Hub.

Please use the Windows Feedback app to report any problems that you might encounter with this build, and remember to follow me on Twitter @gabeaul for preview build and Windows Insider Program announcements.

Thanks,

g

In the Windows Update FAQ, Microsoft said that new Windows 10 users are being pushed to the back of the update queue for the November Update. If it has been under 31 days since you upgraded to Windows 10, then you may not get the November Update right away. After 31 days pass, then your PC will automatically download the update.

I just bought new Windows 10 laptop (migrated from win 7) have had it three weeks and I'm loving it, use my daughters 8.1 occasionally and just do not like it at all. Only issue I have had was after an update recently the items on my task bar had stopped responding, googled and then fixed after downloading winfix from a certain Major's site, 2 mins running that and all seems ok

Well happy with Windows 10, some nice little features on it, Edge seems a good browser also but I like Chrome and using that for moment.

My only glitch with my machines upgraded to Windows 10 has been the failure of automatic backup to work. I've tried suggested fixes but I suppose that I will bite the bullet and do a fresh install on the machines, deleting all existing files in order to fix it. I've also found some bugs in Office 2016 Excel. It might be good for users to wait for a while before upgrading from Office 365. The challenge with Office 2016 will be to locate the commands and functions that used to be obvious but are now hidden or semi-hidden.

Yes it is. You will upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

It appears that possibly some Dell computers may not be compatible for various reasons (perhaps because they don't have the memory or computing power needed). Dell has a page specifically for Win10: (http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/article/Product-Support/Self-support-Knowledgebase/Windows-Operating-Systems/windows-10-support/upgrade-to-windows-10) and you can see which computer models they've tested for Win10 compatibility here: (http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN297954)

My old Alienware M15X was on Win 7 (Ultimate) and only just recently finally got the upgrade. I'd jumped through all the hoops (including d/l'ing and installing loads of updates) to make sure it was ready but it was almost what, 3 months before the upgrade finally was available.

I thought maybe it wasn't going to happen despite the "Get Win10" app saying everything was good to go. That machine was also the only one that didn't like that "Get Win10" app thingy. It worked properly after first installing but then in the weeks after while waiting for the upgrade I would check to see what my status was but when I opened the app it would flash on screen then close. I kept doing the recommended and optional updates (except for the language packs) and finally one day, nearly 3 months after they started switching to Win10, that computer finally got it's update as well.

The general consensus is a dose of the clap can be an improvement on Win 8.* however W10 still needs a bit more mileage and stability to replace Win 7 on a lot of people's 'legacy' installations including 3 of my machines.

Note those still extolling the virtues of XP need not comment here.

I am not that computer literate as many people obviously are on here. Technical terms are commonly used that are simply "double dutch" to me and thankfully I have outlived my desires to be completely up-to-date with everything I come into contact with. One thing has often struck me though....the amount of "problems" the people "in the know" seem to incur,........ where as I hardly get any?

Having lost count of how many times I have had to re-instal my Win 8.1 from my paid for disc, I wonder how I might do the same with the inevitable crashes of 10.

Regardless of how a crash occurred.

Same for install on a new drive.

Sorry if this his covered on the web etc, but I have NO intention of ever becoming a guinea pig for 10.

Not that I am a fan of 8.1 but needs must when the devil drives.
