NAKHON RATCHASIMA: THE Northeast's first bicycle lane was officially opened yesterday in Nakhon Ratchasima's Muang district.

Ten more bicycle lanes are slated for construction throughout the province by the end of next year.

Nakhon Ratchasima has received a budget from the Transport Ministry and the Tourism and Sports Ministry to build 11 bicycle lanes.

The 10-kilometre-long lane opened yesterday runs parallel to highway No 304 (Don Kwang-Pho Klang) near the Royal Thai Air Force's Wing 1.

The construction of the 11 lanes is an attempt to boost safety for cyclists, given more people are cycling for health and fitness, while also reducing pollution, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said at yesterday's opening ceremony.

The Highways Department built the Bt30-million lane launched yesterday. It comprises two two-metre-wide lanes that are separate from the highway.

They start from the intersection near Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo and finish at the intersection near the 2nd Army Support Command.

The lanes - equipped with lights, traffic signs and beautifully landscaped - lead to attractions such as the zoo, Korat Fossil Museum and the resort district of Wang Nam Kheow.

Arkhom said the Department of Rural Roads would build two lanes in Wang Nam Kheow - a 9km-long lane at the Wat Bu Phai intersection in Tambon Thai Sammakkhee and another one near the Lam Phra Phloeng 1 Reservoir.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry would oversee the construction of eight lanes in districts such as Pak Chong, Sikhiu and Sung Noen, Arkhom said.

Korat needs ring roads, not bloody cycling lanes. Does this mean that motorbikes wont be allowed to use them? Ill thought out waste of money.

I hope we receive an update report in 6 months detailing :-

usage, both in terms of traffic and by vehicle type,

surface condition, tree roots, etc.

blocking incidents, e.g. pick-ups using it as a convenient parking spot.

law enforcement, fines handed out to motorcyclists, etc.

I won't hold my breath.

Hint : Look at the budget for its construction.

Wow, I'll go the other way.

Great news. Thailand needs more opportunities to get some exercise outdoors without putting life and limb in danger.

Correct more and more people get obese in Thailand. So i applaud this but on the other hand i share the views of the pessimists too. But that is the same with anything that is done here. The problem is that the police never enforces anything.

But that is no reason not to build them that is like saying roads should not be build because cars and bikes will drive too fast and the police wont enforce it so its better not to build them.

Pessimism is one thing. Wishing for failure is different.

I'm thinking happy thoughts, hoping reality aligns with them. And if it doesn't, I was still happy. And that's better than walking around with a black cloud following me.

Cycle lane in Chantaburi. It ain't got a chance of working. A total waste of money IMO. You're just going to have a 10km verge of noodle stalls parked in it.

These scofflaws should be fined and removed by tow trucks!

Typical responses the world over. Bike lanes are built and drivers are immediately offended. Sorry, drivers it is not always about you.

If there were ring roads around Korat there would be much less traffic in the town. That would do more for cyclists safety than cycle lanes that will, as mentioned, doubtless be used for parking trucks and market stalls. Motor bikes will be using them for sure.

Way too wide, it will be filled with pick up trucks and motorbikes after the first week, if it goes anywhere good.

How do you know how wide they will be?

I notice in Sisaket they've made a long bicycle track around the dam near the aquarium. It's away from traffic and has bicycle hire if needed. It seems popular.

What is wrong with Bungtalua lake? No problem with cars and motorcy's there...

good idea in theory, but i feel its just another lane for traffic at rush hour. Since when have Thais bothered about which part of the road they use? And which way, as well.

Song taew's will definitely use them as a means to dodge traffic hold ups.

going the wrong way, as well....you will need to be just as vigilant, bike path, or no bike path...
