PATTAYA: -- Khun Chakorn, the District Chief, who instigated the raid on the Pattaya & Jomtien Bridge Club in South Pattaya on 1st February, has re-iterated that he intends to process the prosecution against the 32 Bridge players and allow a Judge to decide if anything illegal was taking place.

The news will come as a blow to those involved who were verbally assured by Police that the case would be taken no further. Passports of those involved were returned, although bail money is will being retained by Police as the case remains open.

The District Chief believes that offenses were committed in relation to the raid and a search warrant was issued by the Pattaya Provincial Court.

The warrant stated there were suspicions that offenses were taking place which contravened Section 8 of the Playing Cards Act of 1935 whereby excess numbers of playing cards were present in the room and Alcoholic Beverages were being served between the hours of 2pm and 5pm which contravenes the licenses held by the venue.

The only good that can come of this now is that this guy gets demoted when somebody outranking him steps in and orders the powers that be to cut the crap.

A number of restaurants were hit by I believe these same district officials here in Pattaya over the holidays. A rather big fine for selling alcohol in their restaurant between the hours of 2pm and 5pm. Easy money maker for them.

Is this bridge "club" a business or a private organized group of people who get together to play cards...is liquor sold at these gatherings...do they have a liquor license...do they adhere to the alcohol sale laws...do they also sell fags...they may have many questions to answer for.

I can only assume this is some kind of misguided attempt to save face........As a public relations exercise this guy seems determined to make a fool of himself.....he really should learn when to stop digging that hole.

He's on my Facebook...is he on yours?

Pathetic.A group of pensioners enjoying a game of bridge.

Why don't the police do something more worthwhile with their resources?Such as arresting the real Koh Tao murderer(s).

Quite possibly, but do you think running them down the nick and confiscating passports, demanding "confessions" is the right way of going about it?

Admitting he made a mistake seems to be problematic for this guy and many other Thai officials. He may be concerned that his underlings now see him as fallible or even a clown.

Also, he may have invested money in the raid confident of netting a handsome profit which has morphed into a net loss. He may now be chasing his losses.

As with the B2 case the enlightened one is powerless to intervene in fear of the consequences, and retaliation, or being posted to a new location, better to be a brat.wai2.gif

More & more despondent of the leaders, they spend all this time & money pursuing senior citizens for playing a card game yet appear to accept the fact that young people commit crimes (serious crimes) and their only excuse is they were high on drugs or drunk at the time. Makes absolutely no sense to me

The trouble is that they initially sent a load of police round to the bridge event and now somebody feels the need to justify that decision.

If alcohol was on sale then that changes the whole thing and it cannot be described as a bunch of pensioners getting together to play bridge, if however the pensioners brought their own alcohol and no alcohol was on sale then common sense says they were doing nothing wrong.

One is encouraged to see foreigners-of-maturity being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Too many of these nonagenarian delinquents are taking advantage of the renowned good nature of the Thai people, bringing in more than two packs of cards at one time, sipping shandy out of hours, gathering in groups of more than five. Why, if laws are not enforced, these miscreants will be stealing walking-frames, racing wheelchairs along Beach Road and raiding pharmacies for Kamagra nocturnally in no time.

This is the only way the police can save face. The damage to Thailand's reputation internationally has already been done.

DOPA is under the ministry of interior and was the first point of contact by Khunying Chodchoy. I was under the impression that the minister was now up to date on the actual legalities, that is it is an exception based on a later act from the 1943 one. The minister should be bringing him in for an attitude adjustment.
