Birds in your garden

Featured Replies

Unfortunately no other useable pic.

I find it really tough trying to ID raptors maybe just a tad less challenging than leaf warblers.

Talking of colourful but common birds, I managed to get this photo about right of a White-throated Kingfisher. Rarely seen near water, happy hunting in fields etc.

The Doves, Mynas and even robins in my garden love "small breed" dog biscuits. I put any mango's that fall from my trees on a table which seem to mainly attract the Bulbuls and even butterflies. I've

I heard screeching Indian mynas out my backyard and knew something was bothering them. Grabbed the camera and made it to the backyard just in time to see this being mobbed by a pair of mynas.

Sorry for the truly awful pic but could this be Shikra?

Shikra for me, tail bars, hint of a red eye(male), 5 fingers. That said, Accipiters are difficult, but I have taken a lot of shots these last few months of a bird that hangs around my patch(see previous posts with images) and this one looks the same!

Getting to be that time of the year again! No not Songkran! Breeding time for our avain friends. Locally have spotted several Eastern Cattle Egrets with breeding plumage. The attached pic(not brilliant) shows colouring of head and the pink that develops on the beak and legs.

Happy snapping!

Yep. I had a couple Cattle Egret in breeding plumage over the weekend in Chonburi. Attached here, three Great Egret. One in the forefunt not in Breeding Plumage yet (Yellow bill and cere) but the two in back both in breeding, with black bill and blue cere.

Just some recent pics, nothing exotic.

Question about the Drongo, the feathers in the V of the tail, underside of the tail and breast were nearly white, first time i have seen this, is it common.

@BLACKJACK2

What I think you have here is Ashy Drongo (not Black) and probably the resident race mouhoti (or one of the other darker races of Ashy) rather than the very grey, white-cheeked leucogenis. See guide books or http://orientalbirdimages.org for comparisons.

Bangsaen yard list species #89. Oriental Pratincole flyover. Group of 10 or 11.

Please if you are a photographer and use the forum to try to upload your images.

Would you please try to help us resolve some issues, which have been plaguing uploads lately... we hope it will help pin point some problems.

Please take a few minutes to help!

Somewhere close by in the trees there a bird that calls almost all day and into the early evening. The best description I can give for it's call is a loud shrill  tooWEEEoh. It is quite piercing at times.

Generally the couple of greater couls with their Woopwoopwoop set it off.

I cannot get any sight of at all.

Any ideas?

100% that's it. I can copy the whistle back and it gets faster and faster replying and sounds really irrate at the end.

Still haven't managed to get a look at it though.

At times we get it, the plovers and the greater coul all going at the same time and it stops any conversation until they shut up.When the big tookay in the garage joins in you can probably imagine the combined noise.

Sometimes the GSD joins in with a howl and looks really sad when I tell her to shut up or even sometimes I join in. Wife thinks I'm loopy but laughs with it. Depends on how many GT's.

The Munia eggs in the nest on our lanai have now hatched and the nestlings are begging for breakfast every morning! Click the mp4 below to download, if interested.

Took a long time but finally a new species on my yard/patch list No 80:

Dark-necked Tailorbird

Not my best image.....but heh who's complaining as things very slow at the moment, probably seasonal, really hot and lots of storms!

What is this ?. Looks like a Russet Sparrow but i can only see its distribution as a winter visitor to Northern Thailand, i live in Saiyok, Kanchanaburi which seems a bit out of the way or am i completely wrong.

While similar to Russet Sparrow, what you have here is a Plain-backed Sparrow (male). Russet does not have the grey collar shown in your pic, but otherwise the birds are quite similar...except that PB has a a grey forehead & crown, which can't be seen in this angle.

Cinnamon Bittern: which is 81 on patch list. Had seen a couple of flybys and went looking for them, found a pair of the birds on a pond near the house.

I disturbed the birds(didn't see them in reeds) and managed to snatch one shot which unfortunately is not great as camera not set for BIF shots!

Beautiful coloured birds.

This from years back when I lived in Surin, but somehow this Cinnamon Bittern ended up under a bed in one of my spare rooms with my dogs going nuts. The bird was unharmed and releases moments after this photo was taken. Keep your eye out for Black Bitterns now, as they are wet season visitors.

Nice click AjarnNorth!

Any other birds to look out for in rainy season. I ask because apart from my Cinnamon Bittern things are a bit quite here!

The bigger question may be...any other birds to look out for UNDER OUR BEDS?!? :vampire:

Depends on where you are and what kind of habitat you have available to you, but Watercock and Blue-winged Pita both come to mind as wet season breeding visitors as well. There are others.

What makes me laugh is one of the rudest things to say in Thai is kee Nok
Bird shxt ! I always try to tell them if a bird Shxts on you in England it is considered lucky ![emoji846]
