Altering IKEA curtains

Featured Replies

I am looking to buy some IKEA curtains off the shelf. Not bad price but they are too long. ANy ideas where I can get them altered in Bangkok?

Bangkok is a big place.

Best bet is to ask around locally, there must be hundreds of ladies with sewing machines doing clothing alterations etc. Shortening curtains should be easy.

I regularly pass such a lady at the soi 23 end of Soi Cowboy.

Just wondering if they can manage the material which is probaby thicker than normal?

Or am I over thinking this?

Asked and they only adjust with other materials... and nothing very interesting plus hesitant to order something without seeing it first. Will it acutally block any light? Etc.

From your last post I assume these are heavy blackout curtains, so yes, you may end up needing a specialist :(

How much too long are they (can you get away with doing nothing)?

25 cm or so.... so pretty significant

I'd be tempted to try them as-is, you will be able to find someone to alter if really necessary.

Where in BKK are you?

Thonburi. Near Wuattakat BTS. It has been suggested that I take them to Little India district of BKK.

When I moved to Bangkok almost five years ago I brought a bolt of material that I had in the USA and never used, but liked. I did some research and found a company named Infinity Design and gave them a call. I was very pleased with the drapes they made for me from the bark cloth material I had. They came and measured everything, made the drapes and also came and professionally hung them when finished. I do not remember exactly how much I paid but it was very reasonable, I think less than 4,000 baht for everything. I still have their card with the email and phone, if you are interested private message me and I will give the contact information to you. If I remember right though at that time I needed my Thai girlfriend to call and make the arrangements because they spoke primarily Thai. However the service was great.

Ikea have an in house alteration service (it's actually subcontracted out).

After you pay, turn right after the till and go as far as you can. The alteration service is in a room just behind the home delivery counter.

They recently did a whole building full of curtains for the company I work for. Every item was finished as required, no complaints.

The girls don't speak much English, so if you want anything a bit complex take a Thai speaker. Have cash - their card machine wasn't working.
