PHUKET: The island’s top-ranking police commander has ordered Chalong Police to take action over the deadly intersection of Soi Thanuthep and Chao Fa East Rd in Chalong, where one foreign man died on Monday night and a woman remains in critical condition after colliding with a car at the intersection yesterday morning.

Chalong Police held a special meeting yesterday (Sept 6) to determine what action to take after receiving the urgent order from Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Teerapol Thipjaroen.

The move to prevent further deadly accidents at the site follows Chalong Mayor Samran Jindaphol yesterday posting videos of the accidents on social media, both which quickly went viral.

Traffic lights and stop signs will largely be ignored, as will the enforcement and B1,000 fine. A no right turn sign will only work if they put a concrete island in the middle of the road to physically stop vehicles turning right. Maybe also some speed bumps on the main road to help slow down the bikes.

That road is only one car wide, putting an island in the middle would effectively sealing off the road to all cars.

He's talking about the island going in the middle of the double yellow in the middle of the road, not the tiny soi.  So in other words, no right turn out of the soi onto the main road, which by the photos shown, is exactly what happened twice.  Impatient motorists decide to turn in front of an oncoming motorbike.

Ah, got it.

I did not understand, because that makes no sense to me People will simply turn right before reaching the island, so the right of it. As you said it looks like the car turned right in the second incident, coming from the soi, with the motorbike riding on the main road, but in the first incident the motorbike seems to have come from the soi.

Edit: no you're right, seems both times to have been the car coming from the soi.

all the parts of chaofa with island show that islands are useless.. People will turn into them while you are coming at 60-90kph with no regards.

Just let people get hit and at some point in 100 years natural selection will have won

That intersection is controlled by traffic lights. Either the car turned with a red light, or the bike went through a red light. One, or the other.

No it isn't.

I noted the speeding bike rider who died in the first accident was a falang.

In the second accident the car driver who pulled in front of the lady on the bike was a blonde farang female.

When does natural selection kick in?

How about getting some competent people in the government and police down there! They are all incompetents and corrupt!

How about changing the record? Live here- accept the downside as well as the plus side. Constantly moaning achieves nothing.

Speed bumps may, unfortunately, increase the accident rate among motorcyclists. The idea sounds good but the nature of no or ill trained motorcycle riders is what sometimes leads to accidents.

A motor cycle rider can quite often have the road rules on their side, but unfortunately dead or injured because of their vulnerability. Therefore the riders need to be more aware (street smart) when riding. Only training and experience brings that.

Also both cars were white sedans.

It has started; the weaker gene farangs end up in thailand and thus the western gene pool gets stronger.

The only way to save lives on the road is the remember that most of the population of this planet is completely dumb.

When remembering this important fact, the only possible solution is to install lane dividers in concrete for every single lane, allowing turns and change of lanes at designated areas only.  That way everyone goes straight until a change of lane/uturn/turn spot where there's also walls of concrete making sure you follow the lines and don't hurt yourself.

Another way to save lives would be to properly educate, train and examine road users, and then strongly enforce the rules to try to keep the idiots from self destruction. The bikers involved in those accidents weren't the only ones filmed going at speeds totally unsuitable for the conditions.

Fixing black spots is also a reasonable tactic.

Nice idea but.....The transportation authority wouldn't be able to keep up with the wall maintenance.   You ever see the condition of walls in parking garages, particularly on the ramps?

Something they could do to make that particular intersection safer would be to remove the old building and food stall from the road verge. They seem to be on/obstructing the inside traffic lane forcing vehicles to merge to one lane.

There's also a large tree right on the road's edge and the two things completely block the view for emerging vehicles until they are committed to go. Speeding bikes are always going to be at risk there.

How about the police moving to end deadly accidents countrywide  ?

Proper enforcement of traffic laws would help and not just at attention and publicity grabbing times.

Why do you say the shop is illegal on government land? It is behind the electricity poles.

I use that right turn quite often & there is a clear view of the traffic coming from the right. Anyway, a small barrier has been placed to stop cars going ahead to the turn & now have to turn left along the alley which can take you to the traffic lights for a safe turn or come out before then on a wider approach to the main road. The tree photo does not look like it was taken at ground level.
