Universal remote for air con

Are they available in Thailand, and if so, where would be a good place to look?  I need to replace a faulty remote on an older, no-name (not even a sticker with model/serial #) air con unit.  When I looked at Amorn (Pattaya) for a replacement remote, I didn't see universal remotes there.

Hmmm.  Doing some more research, I'm wondering:  Do they all have to be programmed with a code from a chart of manufacturers?  I don't know the brand name of the generic air con units I bought so long ago.

I have two identical air cons and one of the remotes works.  I had been hoping the universal remote would be like a universal TV remote I had a while ago where you aimed a working remote at the universal remote and it picked up the code.   I see one listed on Lazada which says "with digital automatic code search function" -- do you suppose that is what I'm looking for and/or it would pick up the correct codes directly from the wall-mounted evaporator unit?

The universals with code search fire control codes at the unit until it powers off (you press a button on the remote when it does). Then test to see if the remote works as expected, if not continue the search function.

I just had an unexpected surprise:  This whole search for a new remote is for the sale of a condo which I'm in the midst of closing.  The day the buyer came for inspection, the one remote totally went berserk -- flashing all the LED symbols with any button press.  A few days later I arrived and it repeated the performance.  Yesterday I returned to the condo and now the bloody remote works again.  Naturally the buyer wants a working remote.  I'm going to try to find a universal remote, and if not, will keep my fingers crossed that this one holds out.

I just downloaded the iOS Zaza app and it appears I need to purchase a piece of hardware since iPhones don't have built-in infrared?  Also, since my outdoor compressor says "Mitsubishi" I selected it from the menu and there appear to be >100 different choices??  Oy, vey.

Have you tried taking the working remote to a few air-con repair shops? They will probably know exactly what it is and where to obtain a replacement.

My time here (Jomtien) has been limited but next week I'll be back, if I don't find one at a market, I'll give that a try.  By any chance, any recommendations for an air con repair shop?   (Jomtien area would be convenient.)  I did try to look up Irish Air Con on the internet, and they seem to have vanished.

I've been a human ping pong ball bouncing back and forth between Hua Hin and Jomtien, spending a day or two in each before returning.  Between fixing a leaking toilet and replacing the remote in Jomtien and doctor's appointments in HH (for a bum foot, so I'm not fully ambulatory) it's draining my energy.

I'd like to think the remote has self-healed and will remain that way, but my gut tells me it won't.  I didn't mention it in this thread yet, but I've tentatively sold the condo and we should be closing the end of next week and the new owner wants (and deserves!) a working remote.

Actually, I did post a pic in another forum section and was trying to tread carefully around forum rules about cross-posting. BUT, here goes:

Anybody recognize it and can vouch for an air con brand/model that it controls?

(And, further to my "unexpected surprise" mentioned above about it springing back to life, it only does so with certain functions.  About half the buttons are unresponsive.)

Looks like a universal one.

Maybe silly question but have you tried putting new batteries.

I've got two of them just sitting here and not being used. Less than 300 baht a piece so they are easy to find. I'll probably throw these two away. Cost more to mail it than they are worth.

May I ask where you found them?

There are many air-con service threads in the Pattaya sub-forum. Have a look back through them.

Irish Air never bothered to reply to me a few years ago, so I wrote them off. Subsequently I have tried several companies, most of which have been very inconsistent. Consistency and professionalism seem to be very rare commodities here.

This place is the one I favour at the moment, though they are quite expensive for cleaning (about 600B).

Thanks for that referral.  In fact, that is one place I was going to check out for replacing the air con in the bedroom.  ISTR reading about someone being satisfied with them.  (May even have been you, KK?)  Maybe if I talk to them about replacing the remote after discussing buying a new air con, it will motivate them to help.

Also, while I'm shuttling between Jomtien and Hua Hin, I've been using the Suvarnabhumi bus by Food Mart and yesterday I sat on the right side, and noticed right there between the bus terminal side and Food Mart is an air con service place.  VERY easy for me to check with them when I step off the bus next Wednesday.

I bought a universal remote and am now back at the condo.  I tried all 500+ codes, and none of them work.  When cycling through the codes waiting for one of them to beep, one does turn the air con off, but if I keep that code active it does nothing else.  Won't even turn the air con off again.  Oh, well.  It was worth a B350 gamble.

Re the shop quoted above:

Sure had me fooled.  There is no air con shop there.  Only a pharmacy.

So, time is ticking out as the deadline to close the condo sale looms and I still don't have a working remote to give the new owner.  I tried a couple air con shops in Hua Hin, as well as Big Kiang (where I bought the universal remote) and HomePro and struck out.  I'm hoping the weather improves here (Jomtien) tomorrow and I'll hit a few air con shops here, and see if Amorn can at least temporarily fix the existing remote.  They "fixed" it earlier this year, but about a week ago it went totally kaput.
