at15 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Trying to get wifi to use my computer in my apartment im retarded with this stuff. Im in an apartment month to month and you cant buy wifi from office. I dont want to buy high speed connection 12 month contract etc. Is my only option to set up hotspot on phone and use that. How much data will that cost me?! Or is there something i can buy at true shop or ais?
robblok Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 First off.. if your going to use that for downloading movies and stuff it will be real expensive. If its just for normal use it would be ok. But maybe someone has an other option. But setting it up would not be too hard if your computer has wifi.
at15 Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 I was gonna do my work like 6 hr a day. Normal web browsing. Maybe a little youtube nothing hardcore. The other option is a coffee world (free wifi) about 5-6 km away. Could take a motorbike taxi, im thinking like 40 baht??

Hotspot from phone is probably the best option. Any wireless device you get true, ais etc, will be the same as a mobile phone hotspot. 200-300 a month will give a a couple of gig data. The only other option is turn on the laptop and see what wifi networks are availible, if you are in a built up area there may be a true, dtac, ais wifi on the pole outside.

If its no hardcore use .. then just get a sim for your phone good for a few gig of usage and share it. I was just wondering if true or 3bb don't offer wifi. I know in other countries you can get wifi only subscriptions.
at15 Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 No TRUEWIFI signal here and my phone wont let me do a hotspot. I guess coffee world it is. There is a Starbucks closer but they want 100thb/hr screw that
orientalist Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 You can get a little wifi gizmo from True and put a SIM in it with a non-stop Internet package. That would cost from 199 baht a month to 699. DTAC and AIS probably have the same gadgets.

xtrnuno41 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 it should be possible to do something with "thetering" on your phone and connect your phone to comp, tehn you should be able to run internet on comp
kokopelli Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Should be a simple matter to get an internet connection in your apartment? I use 3BB which is via a phone line. Other companies access internet by cable. No contract, just month to month. About 600 Baht. They supply the WiFi router.
gandalf12 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Do you have an internet cable connection in the apartment? If so you can connect a Wi-Fi Access point. That would cost around a Baht 1000 if you get something like a basic TP-Link. Alternately you can buy Wi-Fi access on a weekly basis from 7-11. I don't how good that is but it may be worth looking into.

Mangostin Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 If you are on AIS, give a try to this, it will cost you 14 B for 24 hours, max speed 384kbps. Press this code on your phone's keypad *777*738# then press the CALL button.
tonray Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 1 hour ago, Argus Tuft said: You run through a couple of gigabytes a DAY doing web browsing and a few youtube videos?? It depends on how long the youtuve videos are and at what resolution you are viewing them. At 720 or higher (HD) you can easily do this. At 360/480 with short videos 30 minutes or less...then maybe less than 1 GB. I know because I use my phone as my only internet and I buy 12 GB per month so I know exactly how much I can use each day.
Wilted Flower of Scotland Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 The 'MiFi' wireless pocket router is definitely the way to go here if you don't want a 12-month contract.Telewiz/AIS have very good ones for 3,000 Baht of so with a 3g or 4g connection, plus varying data packages on a month-to-month basis. Here's some devices 3G and 4G to buy online :https://3g.vivaonline.biz/product/pocket-wifi-4g-3g-zte-mf90/
Wilted Flower of Scotland Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I've tried tethering my phone before a Sony Xperia and found that for some reason it burned right through my monthly data package in a day!
thequietman Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Wife uses CAT sim card. 99 baht a month and she is never off the phone. When my internet is down, she lets me tether. I can surf and do Skype calls also. Easy peezy.

There are some phone packages which, although providing expensive phone network data, do also include unlimited Wi-Fi. Most people find it in the shopping Malls for example, so the OP need only use his phone to see if there are any wireless networks available. Then just needs to confirm his computer has wireless network connection, not all desktops do. Someone with better knowledge may be able to confirm whether these Wi-Fi spots are accessible from a non-mobile platform, he should certainly have the log-on information. Even if that is an issue picking the internet up wirelessly via phone then into the computer via USB is possible. Then the option of using phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot, taking data via phone network... usually limited and pricey. There used to be dongle sticks available to plug directly into computer USBs which come with a contract. Easiest is surely find out which company (3bb, True etc) is prepared to run a cable (fibre, coax or ADSL) into the condo and of course supply a wireless router.. He may need to check with building management to see if it is OK, and some other residents to see what they have.

OP mentions he doesn't want a cabled in / contract solution as he lives month to month. He also mentions using internet a a local coffee shop, therefore has a laptop with wireless.
userabcd Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Do you have access/signal to a public wifi such as True, AIS or some other open internet provider in the apt block? If yes, you could buy and cheap router with wisp function and set it up in your apt in wisp mode and subscribe to a cheap internet package with the internet provider.

mrwebb8825 Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Buy an AirCard - plug it in and you're off. Works like a cell phone with either a monthly bill or pay as you go like 12Call.

Why bother with a dongle when a pocket router allows you to connect 8 or 10 different devices with the same SIM card and data package?

Cook my sock Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I have True broadband and pretty sure I can cancel at any time.
