CHIANG MAI: -- Police say there are dozens of victims of a Korean man and his Thai wife who set up a website offering marriage to South Korean men.

Thai women who wanted to go and work in South Korean applied in droves and were willing to part with 380,000 just to go to Seoul for the chance of marriage and work, reports Thairath.

But the fraudsters who set up the site just disappeared with their money and gave them nothing.

Arrested yesterday by Phupingkrachaniwet police was 38 year old Lee Yong Hei. He had been wanted on a warrant on charges of fraud and deception.

No news was available of his Thai wife involved in the scam.

The couple set up a marriage agency that would have allowed Thai women married to Korean nationals to go to the country and work legally.

They also offered the chance of a similar arrangement to people wanting to go to Japan.

The Chiang Mai police said there were dozens of victims nationwide and the case was not confined to victims from the north of the country.

Equal opportunity fraud I guess. Everybody got a chance to be a victim. Shows the extent of desperation here I would guess if one could interpret droves.

A fool is born every minute...why would anyone give $10,000 up front w/o tangible returns or evidence? Asking for recommendations or references of previous customers?

people are desperate when it comes to seeking love or work...

Yes, the level of stupidity required to fall for this scam is breathtaking.  But how in the world did these women come up with 380,000 bt??  If they were that desperate, I'd imagine it would be hard to come with 38,000.  I'd heard Thai women were really into Korean guys, but this takes it to another level.

Whenever someone offers me a job in America, the first thing they want is for me to read a bunch of boring documents.  I'd pay good money to not do that, too ?

Well, I hate to generalize, but from what I've heard, and from various sources, Korean men tend to be rather brutal and sadly, wife beating seems to be very common in that country, so I find it hard to understand why Thai women would be 'into' Korean guys, aside from the financial attraction of course.

We obviously do not read from the same dictionary.

Probably because the only thing they know about Korea are the K-pop bands. As for the fee, it was no doubt borrowed.

like the old saying about cons you can never con an honest person. Just shows us these women were making an investment, to assets strip some interested foreigner.

 too sad

Yes, a combination of desperation, greed, or hope for a better or different life. And many people really are not very intelligent and are just plain gullible and the scammers and predators and con men recognized these types.  any thing that requires you to pay money up front must be scrutinized.  Amazing in this electronic and information age that people still fall for scams in the numbers that they do

I know many Thai women that loved the Korean Soap Operas.  The gals in the local Thai massage shop I visited a lot loved the shows
