Law enforcement, technology can cut passenger-van accidents, say experts

Enforcement of the law and education will reduce some carnage caused by the  tired, drunk, drugged and "privileged drivers"  Thailand needs to invest in improving highway engineering. I drive Mittraphap Road.  When you have stop lights, u turn lanes & turn lanes and permitting slow speed motorcycles access to a major traffic artery it is set up for accidents.  Improving highway engineering ($) education, and enforcement will take the death toll down one day, maybe(?)

Have been driving a lot around Chiang Mai during the holidays. Came by a lot of "Check Points"... which either had no police or just officers sitting on a chair looking at the traffic or their phone. 

 

Might be effective if the officers actually did their work...but this will never happen.

 

In one week all this will be forgotten and things will be back to "normal"...

During a recent trip to UK I was impressed at the general discipline among all the bus companies that we used, inc phone apps and digital displays in bus shelters showing exactly where the next bus was and if necessary explaining why it was held up. All had tacho's, internal CCTV and even had wifi for passengers...

Until Thailand is really serious, and not fake serious about dealing with traffic safety,and removing the death trap White vans is the start,the country is still third world and foreigners should steer clear of most forms of public transport!

Once again Thai academicals unashamedly showing off their knowledge to the rest of the world!
The likes of Honda, Toyota, Mercedes & the rest of the global car makers must be quaking in their boots at this revelation, maybe the millions of Yen, Euros & dollars invested in vehicle safety has been wasted as Thailand has the answer yet again!

It lays not in automated car safety features, all that's required is GPS tracking, self auditing, hand written log books & police checks to curb suicidal drivers, combat weather conditions, brake failures not to mention tour buses that are prone to "flipping" in the vicinity of klongs or bends in the road.

Well done gentlemen, pat yourselves on the back... your Nobel prize notifications are in the post!

How about proper driver training; yearly inspections of passenger vehicles; maintenance; enforcement of passenger numbers carried; ensuring all driver's hold specialised licenses; zero drug and alcohol content; (same as for pilots) with testing for same at irregular intervals.  Also fit tamper proof GPS and speed inhibitors.  Then get the lazy police get of their fat proverbial and  enforce the law, and carry out the duty of policing for which they are paid for.

 

When stopped at check points do what it means, CHECK for license, fatigue drugs and alcohol, roadworthiness of vehicle and registration and number of passengers.  If any breach, ground the vehicle and make sure the company involved provides another vehicle and driver, as well as issuing heavy fines against the company and original driver but do not let the vehicle proceed.   How hard can any of this be, it's only common sense, which, unfortunately, given the brain waves that form the basis of this story, is not very common.

Passenger vans are a good service if they were controlled and policed, of course they are not. Almost all western countries and several asian countries have technology assisting in lowering fatal accidents, not only GPS but engine governers which restrict their speed to about 80kmh, seat belt technology which stops the engine if they are unconnected during travel, Restricted drivers' hours. A 6 hour maximum is enforced in many countries so that a trip lasting longer will have a relief driver somewhere en route. Compulsory breath testing of drivers, and although not technology but common sense, tyres replaced every certain number of km, certainly thosands before they look remotely getting bald. Another system is a cut out of the engine if they exceed speed limits.

In addition to my previous post I have just been informed by friends in Australia that considerable coverage has been given by the media on the horrific road toll in Thailand which now has the record for the worst death rate in the world. Here, any news on TV, BBC,CNN, etc. on the road toll is blocked out. The only reason why the government should do this, as it is surely in the interests of road safety to show all here the carnage being committing, is fear of losing the tourist dollar, money before lives. Don't the brain dead realise that every potential tourist is readinbg this anyway.
