Regarding energy ratings, keep in mind you will see two types of energy ratings and labels used.  One is the older Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)  and one is the newer Seasonal EER (SEER).   And when it comes to that 1 to 5 labeling, heck, it seems every A/C gets rated with a 5...not a hard feat to accomplish.

If looking at a catalog/brochure of specifications pay close attention to if an EER or SEER energy rating is being used....and the catalog showing a variety of manufacturer's A/C models may use both EER and SEER ratings depending on the model line.

EER is tested at a temp of 35C where SEER is tested at more realistic conditions where temperature varies 27 to 35C which gives a more realistic energy rating based on seasonal changes and day & night changes.  A SEER rating will be higher than an EER rating based.

So, when looking at the rating/labeling, look close to determine if they are using a EER or SEER rating so when you compare that A/C with another A/C rating you are comparing apples to apples versus apples to oranges.

On the 1-5 label it will say whether it's using EER or SEER, usually in the white space below the 1 to 5 half wheel....but in other cases it may be elsewhere on the label...and the label may or may not have English on it.   Wide variety of labels used.    You'll also see a "year" below the half wheel which will probably be 2011 or earlier is using an EER  energy rating and some date after 2011 like 2015 for a SEER energy rating.

Just look in the label area where it will say EER or SEER...which may or not be in English.    A typical A/C now days if using a EER rating will probably have around a 11 to 14 EER number, where if that A/C was rated on the SEER scale it would probably be around a 15 to 25 SEER number....same A/C...just different energy rating standard used.  And usually the smaller the A/C, the higher the  SEER rating.

So, don't pick an A/C solely based on the fact it's EER/SEER rating may be a little higher than another brand.  Heck, even cheap A/Cs now days have high EER/SEER ratings basically equal to the higher priced A/C, but that cheaper A/C may not have some features you want, not be as reliable/long lasting, a warranty not as good, etc.

I understand that Daikin & Mitsubishi are cream of the crop, but what about the Samsung inverter units. I've been seeing them everywhere & their energy ratings look pretty good. Any thoughts?

Just regarding Samsung A/Cs as a whole, below Australian webpage had them ranked on the lower end for overall satisfaction compared to some 6 other major brand.  But heck, they had Mitsubishi rated basically same-same in overall satisfaction and in Thailand I think Mitsubishi is considered the most reliable while also costing more than most A/C.   Plus, what do people in Oz know anyway

Many times these customer satisfaction ratings are purely based on comments like "Cools Great, Works Like a Charm, Great Price, etc" and then comments usually come within days of the A/C being installed versus a longer term view of satisfaction....like what do you think 3 years later.   Many of these ratings are just done for advertisement purposes and have little or no scientific testing information.
