I want to replace my two year old laptop, and three year old smartphone, will dealers accept a trade in, or should I go to a counter that buys old laptops etc.

Where is the best place to go for this, MBK or Fortune Town? What about Panthip, is it still there? Thanks.

You'll be better off selling your old laptop privately rather than trading it in.  They will not give you much more than 30% of retail value. Try The Thai Visa classifieds.

I was in Fortune yesterday and there is a huge selection of both phones and laptops from many retailers though prices do not seem to vary very much between retailers for the same product.  Always worth a try at bargaining.

If you were to buy both the phone and laptop from the same retailer ,you might be able to make a pretty good deal.

I have consistently found the best prices are often at "IT City" & "Power Buy/Mall", branches at most larger malls.

Avoid MBK.  Their asking prices are higher than anywhere else, then they'll offer you a "deal" that still ends up higher than at other locations.  Also, there are few laptop sellers at MBK, they concentrate on phones.

The "JMart and "TG Phone" shops at most malls are OK for phones.

I second virtually everything dddave said.

Avoid MBK, go to Fortune Tower. Many reputable chains have stores there, they usually publish a monthly flyer, prominently displayed at the entrance of their stores, with their offers and promotions listed on it, take it home, study it so you know what is being offered nowadays and at what price. Then make a decision and come back to purchase. Sell your used items privately (bahtsold or craigslist is always helpful)

There is a National chain of PC/phone shops called "Advice" they also have in-house repair centres.

Good service and good prices. They will do a deal if buying phone and laptop together.

IT City, pay 1,500 baht for their iCare warranty. Includes 1 year international warranty.

Must be very careful comparing prices between stores. Although they all carry the same brand name pc's, pre-loaded Operating System and s/w options, generation chip, memory size, etc. can vary and affect the price.

Yes, that's good advice, I will take it, but I cannot sell anything privately as I live in a village upcountry, and no one is going to travel to out of the way places, I have had my motorbike advertised for sale but when I say where it is, that's the last I hear.

I will try and buy both from the same retailer at Fortune. Thanks.

I am going to Bangkok shortly Charlie, Zeer might be a good one along with Fortune Town, I have already looked around Nakhon Sawan and Phitsanulok.

I have bought a number of phones via Lazada and found them to be considerably cheaper than the equivalent in a phone shop. They deliver free to your house, cash on delivery.

I also have used Lazada for phone, tablet and computer purchases and their price and service are very good. But, warranty service is/can be a serious problem, as the seller may be hundreds of kilometers away. Make sure that the manufacturer has a service center that is convenient to you or buy locally. My computers and phones are Asus, and I need to go to Bangkok (near Fortune Town on Rama 9) for service, as there is no warranty service available here, in Pattaya, and even getting parts for off-warranty service can be difficult locally.

For those residing outside BKK and far from cities, there's also the option to shop online with Invade IT, especially for laptops.

At a minimum, I'd check their website and pricing for the things I might be interested in before heading out to any retail computer shop.
