I had occasion to go into Central yesterday and went into McDonald's for a Burger.

On paying with a 1000 Baht note I was short changed by 500 Baht.

The girl put the money in my hand, no receipt, and walked around the back.

I was left standing there, other customers behind me.

Eventually she came back and I told her wrong change

She said you pay with 500

I known I paid with 1000 as I had just been to the ATM.

I told her I marked all my 1000 Bahte notes

She went into the till and got out a stack of 100 Baht notes and about half way down there was 1 500Baht note.

Obviously left there for collection later.

No apologue

Just a sneer

So be careful

And McDonalds

Take note.

They're always trying it on, got short changed 200 bt in a bar the other night.

Spotted it immediately, she pretended she'd made a mistake.

Whenever I pay for anything with a large note (500 or 1000)  I always say the amount I have given them in Thai as I hand it over. This normally evokes a response in confirmation and the correct change.... try it.

Mate, I've been short-changed in all the Farang supermarkets plus 7-11's numerous times. Before coming here I would never have dreamt of standing in front of a cashier counting my change but do it as standard now. Never had a problem pulling them up on it either. It's always a smile and a mistake and a slightly pissed-off cashier whose just seen a mini-haul disappear. Tea-leafs, mate. Don't let the smiles fool ya.

This is something you need to accept happens if you stay in Thailand. Count your change especially if you hand in 1000 and get handed back 100s (not a 500 note).

You have been short changed in "all the supermarkets" and 7-11 numerous times??  Sure OK.  I have lived here over a year and it has never happened to me.

On giving the benefit of the doubt some Thais are not the best at math.  I am sure there is some short changing but I have also actually been given more money back then I deserved.

This seems to happen dramatically more often in businesses in which the sales assistant is used to dealing with customers who are foreigners, most of whom are on holiday.

In fact these businesses often offer the worst service to go along with the short changing and other rip-offs.

Sorry, but as small beer bar and a McDonalds are not at all the same thing.

I am not a "specialist in MacDonald's", but I all saw them used the same procedure around Pattaya: you pay; then they give you back the change and put the ticket/receipt on your tray, so that any employee can check it at any moment to finish your order/command.

I never saw a McDonald's (or similar shop) not giving a receipt, and in case of problem with a machine they could easily use another one next to it.

I also remind the OP that these MacDo have cameras that monitor the service area, and have a manager who - at least in Pattaya - speak decent English, so...

Last point: While living in Pattaya for more than 10 years, it's funny how I never saw anyone marking his notes when getting them at an ATM in front of me...

I have been short changed dozens of times, especially if you pay with a 1000 baht note. They will try it on anywhere. Wherever possible use small change or check carefully any change as they give it to you.

Why does he need to accept someone stealing from him?  Is it ok that she steals from him because he has more money, or that he makes more money, or is it just that he is a white guy (foreigner) and we deserve it?

Do tell why we need to accept this?

It's happened to me in some tourist trap places but it's never happened to me at a 7-11 or Family Mart. Doesn't everyone that's where to go to change 1000s?

It is interesting to look at the past posts of many of the haters who claim this place is just a big rip off.  Seems their whole life is one big complaint or rip off.  Maybe some of you look like easy targets, who knows.  Or maybe, some are too drunk and have no clue?   I see many guys like that.  But hey OK,  just yell out "I gave you 1000 b" so everyone can hear you and the camera can catch it.  With many trips and now a resident, I have never had a problem with this.  Sorry to hear so many of you are victims.

Just because it hasn't happened to you, doesn't mean it hasn't happened to me. And judging by the other posts in this thread, I'm not alone. So your insinuation that I'm lying is ridiculous. And as for the bad maths, have a word with yourself. They're using computerised tills.

Not a hater. Not a victim. Not claiming Pattaya is a big rip off. Not complaining. Just commenting that short-changing is a reasonably common practice and it's worth checking your change. You should calm down on your generalisations, mate.

Yep OP "short-change" is rife.

The cashiers have nothing to loose and everything to gain.

Another big culprit of this is exchange bureaus'. They separate the loose change (up to 1000)  and the main stack. You get the loose change first. If you take that off the counter before the main stack comes, you haven't got a leg to stand on when and if you realise.

I guess you think this is a Thai bashing thread, and because it has not happened to you, then it NEVER happens. "No Thai would do that"

Oh my gosh my friend, you are a victim.  Being short changed in ¨all¨ the supermarkets numerous times and numerous times at 7-11s.  I have never heard of that.  I guess that is quite a bit of bad luck and you certainly seem to have been victimized or at least to have been an attempted victim. You do not think it is their bad math?  Then, I would make sure you ask the cashiers at these places why they continue to do this to you.  Also, ask yourself why this keeps happening.  I hope you can figure it out or get an answer and please let us know maybe this will prevent future similar incidents occurring to others.  Thanks, let us know.

Accept you need to spend an extra few seconds at the cash register counting your change in case you get short changed.

I got a moto-taxi ride once & the guy told me 80 baht.

I had to run in a Tesco for less than 5 minutes & asked if he'd like to take me back. Sure, he'd be happy to wait.

Got back to starting point & watched him almost break down (in his head) trying to add 80+80.

It was so entertaining that I gave him 200 baht.

You have been short changed dozens of times?      How is that?    I have been here going on 30 years and I can count on 1 hand the times I've been short changed.   Maybe you have "sucker" written on your face?

That's a good point. It doesn't happen that often, but it certainly does happen.
