Second big fire in a day hits Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Fire ripped through the headquarters of the Provincial Water Authority in Chaeng Wattana Soi 1 yesterday evening.

 

Some 15 fire engines took nearly two hours to finally bring the blaze on the fourth floor of the four story building under control.

 

Police and firemen had been alerted by security who had sounded the alarm. The area of the fire was used as offices and a record storing facility.

 

All employees had reportedly gone home and there were no reports of injuries.

 

Several loud bangs were heard in the area and Thai Rath said these were believed to be air conditioning compressors exploding. This led to firemen and foundation staff to exercise extreme caution.

 

The cause of the blaze is as yet unknown. It was finally brought under control at 8.45pm after having been reported to the authorities at 6.50pm.

 

Earlier in the day fire broke out at the Fortune Town complex in Rachada, Bangkok.

Probe into Provincial Waterworks head office blaze

BANGKOK: -- Forensic investigators on Tuesday morning inspected the Provincial Waterworks Authority’s head office in Bangkok's Lak Si district after a fire there on Monday evening.

 

Engineering Institute of Thailand representatives will also inspect the structure.

 

PWA governor Seri Suparathit said a fact-finding committee would be set up to probe the fire. 

 

Seri said police would speak to security guards at the office as part of the investigation.

 

The fire broke out at about 6.45pm on the fourth floor of the second four-storey building at the head office. 

 

No one was hurt. 

 

The blaze was brought under control in about two hours later and firefighters kept dousing it with water to prevent it restarting. 

 

Police said the whole affected floor – comprising the office of PWA officials, the PWA-attached branch of the Office of the Auditor General of Thailand and a document storage area – was damaged and the roof caved in.

The day before the building that is now the Intercontinental Hotel in Bangkok was due to open an air conditioner exploded and caused a massive fire when led to people being airlifted off the roof by clinging on to the helicopter runners. scary. There was a sprinkler system in place as required by law, but there is no law that says it must be turned on. Guess if it was turned on.
