I've been coughing non-stop for about a week now. 3 days ago I coughed and it felt like someone had stuck a knife in my ribs. Since then, chest region near the heart hurts badly every time I cough. Went to a local private hospital, thought I might have had pleurisy. Doctor ordered X'rays which showed all clear. He thought I had strained chest muscles, bad throat inflammation. Temperature and BP normal. Coughing up yellow/green phlegm lumps regularly, no blood.

He prescribed the following medications:

Roxithromycin 2/day

Bisolvon 3/day

Norgesic 3/day

Fluimucil 3/day

Mixture Tussis, no dose specified.

I haven't slept for 60 hours, and it's getting me down. After two days on the meds, zero improvement.

I was thinking of going back and asking for sleep, and more effective pain medication. Suggestions welcome.

Could be apples and oranges comparing my cases to yours, but when I used to have more frequent bouts of bronchitis leading to uncontrolled coughing, the best prescriptions I got were those with codeine.  It seemed to be a magic bullet for coughing.  The most effective were cough syrups with codeine. Granted, that is only treating a symptom (the coughing) but I would also get other meds for the cause (the bronchitis).

Thank you, I'll see if I can get one of the medicos to prescribe the syrup. I also have some Panadeine Forte ( 500 mg

paracetamol, 30 mg codeine ) which I've taken as we speak.

Really desperate for sleep. I can get an uneasy nap in a chair, but as soon as I lie down, it triggers coughing.

Good luck. Were you traving or it just came on?

Did you mean travelling? No, in CM all the time. Feel better now I've managed a bit of sleep.

Good news Bazza. Yes I meant travelling.

There is also a quite effective cough supressant available at 7-11s and all pharmacies - "Brown Mixture", green package with orange tiger on it. Contains small amounts of tincture of opium.

Maybe smoke related? Some time at the beach with clean salty air could help with that.

Thanks Sheryl, that was given to me ( Mixture Tussis ) by the hospital. Camphorated Opium and Glycyrrhiza. It seemed to make my coughing worse.

Perhaps I'm a codeine junkie instead, although this is the first time I've used it for cough suppression. Or it's the dose - tincture vs 30 mg of codeine.

Could be, although I reckon the smoke this year was a lot less than last year. Last year I could barely see across the Ping River from my condo.

A couple years ago we invested in some air filtration machines for our CM condo and they've made a big difference.  I knew it was time to turn them on this year when I started to develop coughing in February,  complete with bringing up hunks of yellow/green mucous.  It was sad, because the weather was still cool enough that we wanted to sleep with the windows open, but the air quality had deteriorated too much.

was a time when i regularly had this when staying in any pattaya hotel….seems they don't clean the aircon vents and this spreads infection.

I used to take Klarid/Klacid (clarithromycin) for a week, twice a day and it was gone.

Yes, important to get the aircon units professionally cleaned twice a year.  The crew comes in with a power washer and shop vac and disassembles part of the aircon unit to really get them clean.   We always do this just before we start them up before CM's smoky season.  They were amazingly filthy this year.  It will be very interesting to see what they look like with the Aug/Sept cleaning.  We also clean the filters every 2 - 3 weeks in the shower stall ourselves, too.

Get your 'Helecobacter Pylori' levels checked.

You may laugh but a pharmacist told me to try it...It worked....

Get a deep bowl about 10 inches across, fill it half way with any salt then fill with water, stir it up. Put it on your bedside cabinet, top up with water as it evaporates....Give it a week to notice the difference, keep it replenished with salt as it will be taken into the room..:stoner:

PS. Folk I have told this to are happy bunnies....Worth a try for little money.

Trans, I am confused. The system you describe will deliver a controlled humidity to the room - about 70%RH from memory for sodium chloride (salt). I don't understand how the salt component can be transported into the atmosphere sitting in the bowl - salt is not volatile, boiling point 1413 degrees C.

Update: Went back to the hospital and was referred to a specialist there. He changed my meds to include codeine, also put me on prednisolone for the muscle pain. I'm a bit wary of prednisolone because it has side effects such as confusion, memory loss and psychosis; however, it's only three days supply so that should be enough. Not something I would want to be taking long term.

My bedroom gets covered in salt dust. The bowl will eventually disappear, it will become  encased with salt, inside and outside, the floor around the bed cabinet will become covered with salt. For sure I am breathing salt air....:stoner:......I keep the ceiling fan running to move air about..

Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic, persistent cough: is there an association?

Abstract

INTRODUCTION:

Chronic, persistent cough is a common clinical problem, the cause of which sometimes remains unidentifiable.

AIMS:

To study a potential association between Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic, persistent cough.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

A clinical observational study with symptom analysis, including 162 patients whose main presenting complaint was chronic, persistent cough of unidentifiable cause (study group) and 42 patients with chronic, non-specific laryngopharyngeal manifestations not including chronic cough (control group).

RESULTS:

Active H pylori infection was present in 86.4 per cent (140/162) of patients in the chronic cough group, as opposed to 45.2 per cent (19/42) of the control group, as confirmed by detection of H pylori antigen in stool specimens. This difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). There was a significant improvement of the chronic cough of 75.4 per cent (98/130) of patients after successful H pylori eradication using appropriate medical therapy (p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS:

Helicobacter pylori infection may lead to laryngopharyngeal irritation, with several clinical manifestations including chronic, persistent cough. However, the exact mechanism of this requires further research.

Hi Sheryl,

I ran out of the hospital brew, and bought the suppressant you suggested. It's got tartar emetic in it, which the hospital stuff didn't have. Results were quite spectacular in terms of sputum production. The expectorant function kicks in well before any suppression.

Anyway, my thanks to all the contributors to this thread. Hopefully it can also help someone who gets the same problem later on.

Now, if I can just get a good nights' sleep.....Cheers.

The Prednisolone will reduce inflammation quicker than most anything.

Maybe so. The side effects are scary.

So far today, I have:

Locked myself out of my condo,

Forgotten my helmet when going out to my scooter, and ( this one I can't believe )

Gone into 7/11 to get Sheryl's recommendation. Walked halfway back to my condo with my shopping in one hand, and an empty 7/11

basket in the other. Our security guy nearly pissed himself laughing when he saw me.

It is no doubt very powerful.
