Chalong Thongkleub, captain of the Ao Payom speedboat that capsized offshore Trat on Tuesday evening, recalled the ordeal on Wednesday, saying that strong wind and waves and heavy rains had forced him to anchor.

He said he let the boat sink after urging everyone onboard to don life jackets and to hang on to buoys and ropes until help came.

Following the accident, which occurred at 6.55pm three kilometres from the shore of tambon Ao Yai of Trat’s Muang district, six crewmembers and 20 tourists were rescued by a passing fishing boat. By 9.30pm, marine police and the Navy had transported the tourists from Koh Poo in tambon Nongkhason.

strong wind and waves

maybe he should have considered this before setting off and putting 20 peoples lives in danger. instead  number one - his pocket and profit

Prosecute him

If there were strong winds, large waves and generally bad weather, why the hell was he putting to sea in the first place.Peoples lives are way more important than the timetable. This is the sort of stupidity that gets people killed. Very lucky to get away with it. This time!

....how did this guy ever become a ship captain...

One day, the boss said, "now you are the captain" and he was. There might have been a hat involved too.

So only as the boat was sinking did he tell his passengers to put on their life-jackets ?  They should have put them on the moment they boarded the boat, and it was his responsibility to tell them to do so

But he is a qualified captain, is'nt he ?
