So a few days ago I got a new passport (US). In my old passport I have a Non-O multi-entry visa that still has a few months of validity left on it, and I have an entry stamp that's good for about another 60days. When I got my new passport, my embassy gave me a note explaining that I had to go to Thai immigration at Cheang Wattana and have the stamp transferred to the new passport.

So I headed out there and got all the correct copies and forms. The copy shop knew exactly what I was talking about, the immigration office "front desk" person understood perfectly, and provided a form just for the purpose, and they checked over my photocopies. But when I got to the actual immigration officer, they had no idea what I was trying to do. After I tried to explain several times, and my wife tried to explain (in Thai) several times, the officer finally just gave up and told me I'm supposed to use the old passport (which is obviously canceled) when leaving Thailand and that nothing else was required.

Obviously I'm skeptical, the officer seemed completely wrong about basically everything they said. So does anybody know what you're really supposed to do? Should I go back and burn another day to try and figure this out? Or is it all just a big waste of time (but why in the world would they have forms and procedures for it then)?

I used my old no valid passport some years ago with same visa and just gave the immigration at the airport both passports and no problems.

I am actually going to Pattaya immigration tomm to transfer my retirement extension and multi-entry to my new passport.

See how that goes.

They do not transfer visas, just permits, which in your case isn't necessary.

Just show both passports when leaving and the IO will transfer your permit to the new passport and stamp you out.

When re-entering, show both passports. The visa remains valid in the old passport until the visa expires.

i have a similar situation coming up.  i'll be applying for a new passport in the next few months.  i just obtained my first extension of stay-retirement along with a multiple re-entry permit (so slightly different than a multiple entry visa, my visa is history).  i thought i had to do some kind of stamp transfer described by the OP.   is my case the same as the OP ?  i'm pretty sure i had to transfer a visa exempt stamp back in 2008 when this expiring passport was issued.

No, it's different.

You need to go to immigration to have your permt (extension) transferred. They will probably not transfer the re-entry permit, in which case just show the old passport when re-entering.

Is going to Chaeng Wattana optional when you get a brand new passport?

It would be good if I could just carry both old and new passports through airport or border crossings than have to waste time at Chaeng Wattana just to have an extension of stay stamp transferred.
