CityNews – The Nakorn Lanna Cooperative who manage the Red Songtaews in Chiang Mai have announced a total overhaul of their services that will be rolled out this month and completed by August 30 after a new policy was announced at the Sustainable Urban Transport Conference.

At the Chiang Mai Sustainable Urban Transport Conference on June 5, a new policy was announced that will reorganise songtaews around the city. All songtaews must now be re-registered as commercial cars (Car 30), all existing standard routes will be removed and they will be limited to staying within the second ring road.

All songtaews will now be free to drive anywhere in the city and must not charge more than 30 baht per person. If the songtaew is hired privately, the price should not exceed 200 baht and the driver must not pick up any other passengers during that trip.

To justify the standard 30 baht fare. Passengers will have to accept that the bus will limited to the city area within the ring road. That's my reasoning.

But first, wait and see if this order is obeyed, after all, TIT.

Sustainable? I would have thought they included measures to reduce if not eliminate toxic exhaust, fumes from the sooo many songteaws.

What disappointment!

Make as many rule changes as they like, drivers (and their "management") will do what they want to keep the income level high. They don't bother with traffic lights, indicator signals or looking in the mirror when they stop or pull out so why should they care about other rules?

You're getting ahead of yourself. Let's first see whether it even gets off the ground.

Uber is eating their lunch and it is as it should be, times change, They are major polluters on Chiang Mae streets and one of the reasons I moved on.

I think it would be pretty cool to see people start filming the bad polluters along with their license plates and start posting them to a Facebook page along with the DLT.  Some of those heaps are way beyond bad and very illegal.  And yeah, the drivers are mostly shit for road manners.

Clearly they are doing this overhaul to fight off the competition from Uber. If you want a private ride 200 baht is still too expensive in the city centre compared to Uber .
