Replacement tailgate for Toyota Truck - copy ok?

Featured Replies

Bashed in the tailgate on my older Toyota Tiger pickup truck and looking to replace or repair it. I am on Samui, so costs are high and not so many second hand parts, although Surathanee is a source. So far I have one quote to repair damage and repaint for 6,000+ baht and one quote of of 2,650 baht for a new copy (they said made in Taiwan) tailgate. My preference was to find a second hand original Toyota part but haven't got a lead on one yet. Two questions for the forum:

Anybody have any idea as to the quality and durability likely of the copy version?

Would a second hand one potentially  be a problem if the vehicle had been in an accident that affected the frame and warped the tailgate also (or is that something you can spot)?

Thanks for any knowledgeable replies.

Maybe you can Check the material in advance. If they use the same material copy should work the same.

There's so many of those around there has to be a source for a good used one....Just driving around

CM there's 4 or more wrecking yards with truck beds strewn about just in passing by.....

There's also some groups on FB you might put an inquiry on....

Copies are notoriously/often of lesser quality than o.e.

Both in treatment for longevity/rusting out and for performance under crash conditions....Many countries won't allow them to be fitted without proper documentation & disclaimers - if at all.....

The tailgate on a pickup is not gonna effect crash performance.

The biggest issue is will the non OEM tailgate dimensions / shape be accurate for it to fit properly.

Agreed on the crash part.....

Unsure on the load holding - bearing & locking functions part....Depending on actual hauling or usage for the vehicle....If used like a truck....

Back in the UK you could buy virtually any panel that was a "pattern" part. Never a problem fitting them. If your guy quoted you for a pattern part l would assume he has fitted them before..I would go for it...:stoner:
