Well here in the local starbucks there are some cheap time hookers that hang around...the free wifi helps them to be online on their postings!!....

But apart from that, I do not see anything much more attractive in Starbucks?!! Maybe I am a bit disconnected?....Nevertheless, the sales gals are more cutie chestys at the local Burger KIng:passifier:...But to get back on topic....640,-- in BKK can be realistic, if it's just for food!!

But, according to some, you're a "snob" if you spend anything over 30K a month

Each to there own but I would have thought that boiling water all the time is wasting energy. If you get 2 big 6lt bottles of water and 6 1lt bottles from a supermarket once you won't be waiting plastic. I carry 2 about once a week so it ant that bad. I would never consider boiling 12 liters of water of week when I don't have to this must be terrible for the environment .Also all the plastic bottles get recycled hair so I wouldn't worry about that. And it sounds more of a pain in the Ass then carrying the water its self. But I suppose we see things differently.

Yeah this is why I insist on living no more than 50m from a 7-11.

I'm within 25 meters of a 7-11 and a Family Mart here so all good

Carrying 2 X 5-liter bottles of water in 35-40 degree heat more than a few meters is too much like hard work.

I'm thinking long and hard about getting a filter plumbed in, though.

boiling water is wasting energy, bad for the environment ?  i have a feeling energy is used to produce the bottled water, not to mention transport it (which is bad for environment).  so i'm sure my method is the least use of energy/best for environment.   not all the plastic gets recycled, just look at the beaches in thailand.  plastic bottles come in with the tides quite often.

Perhaps more to the point would be not just how much you spend, but what your monthly income was.  (Lets assume you do not use savings and investments for your monthly outgoings). If you are under 50, and income is only say 20,000 baht a month, as an expat you are walking along a very narrow path on a steep mountainside. Don't slip if you have nothing saved up.

This discussion is going down. The OP clearly asked about his budget and how to live with that or even reduce it.
I don't know why some snobs (yes, I continue to use this word) have to add some bragging comments just to profile themselves.
If you don't have to contribute something better be quiet.
Continue wasting your money at Starbucks and enjoy to pretend playing golf

as mentioned many times in these threads, the best answer is the 65,000thb that immigration requires for long stay visas.  that gives you 10,000/wk for food, entertainment, etc...  and you've got 25,000 left over for rent, health insurance, and maybe set a bit aside for a trip somewhere (trips are cheap if you stick with domestic travel).  and i relate this to bangkok cost of living (as did the OP).

Why do you need to be rich or stupid to live on Sukhumvit? It is convenient, all the amenities are close by and certainly there are areas which are not expensive? So which part of that makes some living there rich or stupid?

Yes, if you are a fat, lazy farang like myself who only eats out.

Food in Thailand is extremely cheap. Fact. There are so many things you can make with super cheap chicken and veggies it's really a crime. I was actually calculating this the other day and if I cooked the meals myself I could eat like a boss for 200b a day.

But I don't.

The whole area is overpriced. From cost of rent, food, etc...
The real estate prices are ridiculous.
What can you find there that another cheaper or not so central area not has?
To back up my example, I live in lower Lad Phrao road.
Rent 7,000 (which I think is already expensive)
7-11 in front
5 min walking distance to MRT
Big C Supercenter nearby
Central and Union Mall 1 station MRT or bus
Chatuchak market and JJ green nearby
Not far to IMAX at Major Ratchayothin
A lot of restaurants and bars in walking distance, even some with non-thai food
Convenient to get to Mo Chit bus station and Don Mueang Airport
If you should be interested in some "bars", even there are some nearby.

So why should I want to live near or at Sukhumvit?

And if you don't want to cook, look for a university near your place. Given the amount of uni's in Bangkok the chance is high there's one within walking or cycling distance.
They have food courts or canteen where you can get a meal for about 35 Baht (rice+2 toppings).
Also don't forget to calculate the small things everyday.
I used to take the Motorcycle taxi almost everyday to MRT station.
Only 10 Baht one might think.
But calculated over a month it's reasonable amount.
So now I use my bicycle and lock it at the provided parking for 2 wheels.

I work in the centre so i dont want to be commuting to lad phrao everyday. It is convenient for my lifestyle, my spare time and my work to live near sukhumvit. Lad prao would not be convenient. I drive so being near mo chit has zero bearing. I travel indeequently and when i do it is from swampy which is convenient from sukhumvit.

In summary i think you are trolling.

totally agree on the food and cooking for yourself, who wants to do that every day, all year.  i feel a little ripped off when i pay 500thb for a great restaurant meal plus a beer.  i could do the same at home for far less.  at least you meet new people every now and then when you eat out.

You protest too much.

Live where you like. I don't call you a pauper for living in a 7K room that you actually consider overpriced but you shouldn't call me a snob or stupid for paying the 35K I pay for my place on Sukhumvit 23.

I can't get the following living in a backwater like Lad Phrao

World class malls EM Quartier within a 5 or 10 minute walk

High end Virgin Active and Fitness Frist gyms nearby

High end cinemas at Emporium and T21

I can get PG Tips and other British faves at Gourmet Food Markets, Foodland and Villa which are 5-10 minutes away.

The BTS and the MRT are within 3 minutes walk and that I can get to any part of Bangkok with minimal hassle

When I stumble out of a club at 4am, the taxi drivers never have an issue with my destination.

When I come out of my condo, I can stick out a hand and have two or three taxis vying for my fare.

I hardly ever have power cuts because the electricity company makes sure all the businesses at Exchange Tower, Interchange etc have 100% uptime.

All the late night clubs are close by

There are dozens of coffee shops (including Starbucks) within a couple of minutes' walk

I can buy a bottle of vodka at 2am from the store on soi Cowboy when I bring the party home with me

7-11 and Family Mart within 25 meters

I think all those things are worth having close to hand so I gladly pay what I pay.

i like the clubhouse on 23.  and i go to the open air place across the street with the high priced craft beer.  the food is also priced a bit high but quite tasty.  thai ron is in good shape on 23.

Sorry, could not resist two things.
A car in central Bangkok, well that's clever...
Flying from Swampy means you rather tend to use Air Asia...

Haha, I can tell you the location of these bars.
No ladyboys, cheap beer and girls on par with cowboy and nana

Completely agree which is the crux of my post on the stupidity of your original comment.

I have a car because i play golf a lot and like to travel around on weekends and holiday.

I travel mostly for work and if given a choice prefer national airlines. Most of these fly from swampy.

I spare my thoughts about people who play golf...

There we go again, another thread in this forum where someone asked about to rent near his workplace for 15k, family with children. And immediately someone replies if he can't get a decent job with adequate salary.

Not sure why you continue with this attack.

I already suggested you ask the guy that posted the comment as to what was meant by it.

Yourself and one other made a reply to me on my reply to the guy that posted the comment that you object to. I just thought he was joking.

It seems you lack  much more than a sense of humour.

Almost everyone is off on a tangent here.

The OP has money, he just wants info on how much you can survive on for his own "Blogging" purposes.

Time to stop squabbling and do something useful,  like stop the wife washing the car with a pan scourer for instance?
