Pattaya tunnel being repaired before it's even open

PATTAYA: -- The Department of Rural Road have been digging up the exit from Pattaya's much vaunted tunnel after they noticed water damage to the road surface.

The tunnel - supposed to finally open next month - has not had a single car pass through but is already being repaired.

The authorities blamed some rogue underground water.

It will all mean a delay of at least another week as the side leading to Chonburi is repaired.

The 800 million baht tunnel has been constructed over many years. Last month it was reported that it would finally open in August.

Siam Chon news said yesterday that repairs would take a week though they were unsure what that meant for the opening date.

That 'rogue underground water' has been creating a wet spot there for months. Even in the hottest and driest spells leading up to and through April, it was always wet.

Oh surprise, surprise! A bodge job and delays on a project in Pattaya. I don't know why they bother giving us "opening dates' for anything here, as I am yet to see anything actually hit the target. They would be better off just being honest and saying we have no idea how many cock ups we are going to have to fix, so it will open when it does. I am going to watch with great interest to see what happens when it REALLY rains. I suspect more pesky underground water will mysteriously appear.

There's rogue underground movements springing up every where; this is a job for the army.

I have it on good authority Pattaya Floating Market is relocating in the near future to a more "central Pattaya area" now I wonder where it could be..................:cheesy:

Probably the same natural aquifer that the 'engineers' have thrown in the towel at on Soi Siam Country Club just east of the market. There's about 3 of them between Naklua and Theprassit.

hmmm, if water is at the exit point which is a higher elevation than the inside of the tunnel, me thinks the water problems are from resolved and may become a chronic problem with frequent tunnel closures, the future of the tunnel is questionable.

I lived between Soi Nern and Siam CC for ten years and watched numerous attempts to solve an underground spring/aquifer next to the old Wanasin farm. Three different sizes of culvert and God know how much concrete never solved it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the tunnel "damp patch" is part of the same system making it's way down to the sea.

Why am I not surprised...traffic still running pretty smooth at the Suk\Klang junction however.

If it wasn't so pathetic it would be funny, but it ain't. As NanLaew said, that wet patch has been there for months, might as just fill the tunnel with cement and start on building an elevated road way.

These people are just............................ I don't have the words to describe how I feel about this.

Don,t hold back now...........

I think we can definitely finally be assured that this won't be the final delay...I wonder if they have found the skilled high tech tunnel systems operators yet ?

Most likely it will be the "DRY SEASON" when it actually opens............. LOL ..........

If it wasn't so pathetic it would actually be funny..... add this with SCC road and lets see whether the bypass road actually ever gets finished even though it's going great guns now I would expect the bulk of the money to dissapear shortly if not already dwindling

I agree.  They would have been better off narrowing the center median and adding lanes while improving the intersections along the road.

Me too.

The words "couldn't", "laid" and "brothel" spring to mind.

But yes it was indeed a pleasure driving around Klang and Suk today. If only they'd just left it like it was when they first started this whole tunnel fiasco. Seriously how many years have we had to put up with this crap? Must be close to half a decade.

I thought they had already hired him. Surely that's the guy sitting in the deck chair by the barricade at the blocked Northern entrance ?

.  this will be a disaster.  just wait for some real rains and flooding, the water that is now probably seeping below adjacent building foundations, under the roadways, etc

Tap the aquifer and any dry season water shortages are over. A silver lining in every cloud.

Another project, money troughs fill, all good.

There is an opening for a "fresh spring water" plant to take advantage of this naturally occurring water.

Of course they would need to properly filter it to get rid of the poisons, fertilizers and heavy metals and then supplement with tap water to make up the shortfall.  Pretty much like the western world.  Of course it would be hard to get western prices for water (Aust 150B/litre plus) but the likes of Coca Cola have this down to a fine art and would figure it out somehow.

Business opportunity anyone?  10% finders fee though.

Cheers

Construction disruption started around November 2014.

Seriously, you do the math.

Since both the the tunnel and the SSCC improvements were projects approved and issued during the last 'elected' Khunplome mayoral administration, I would suspect that the current, junta-appointed city administration is the reason why work slowed on the tunnel and totally stopped on SSCC.

Surely the money would have been allocated and all proceedings approved beforehand, how would the change stall the work? Genuinely interested not trolling... surely it would be in everyones best interests to get the projects completed

They noticed a water damage that has been there for almost a year?

I can't wait for the tunnel to be closed for flooding! Coming soon in a rain near you!

not surprised on the delay opening... just confused why not to build a bridge instead of "Tunnel"...?  555
