hi   my old / existing passport will expire the end of February 2018

i have just obtained my retirement extension in July 2017

the immigration has stamped it until the passport expires the end of  February so i need to apply again the beginning for February

if i get a re-entry permit then return to the uk in August and obtain a new passport and return in November what will happen when i arrive at bangkok air port

i will have a blank new passport and my cancelled old passport with the re-entry permit and my extension still in it

Just show both passports on arrival. they will stamp the new passport. On your arrival card where they ask for visa number write the re-entry number. You will then apply for a new extension of stay in February. When you return to your home go to your local Immigration and transfer your extension of stay to your new passport. It should be free. Depending where you live you may also require a new TM30 within 24 hours of your arrival.

after they have transferred my extension into the new passport i assume i then have to return to the immigration again at the beginning of February  and re-apply  for another year extension is that correct ?

if so will my extension then run from February to February each year

When arriving at Bangkok airport in November take extra care to fill the number of the re-entry permit in the departure card (in the visa field) and point to the re-entry permit at the checkpoint.

Check that you got the admitted until stamp until February (when your extension ends) immediately after the checkpoint.

Just looking at my last departure card and there doesn't appear to be a "visa field"  just name date of birth passport number nationality and flight number

You will find the "visa field" on the Arrival part of the TM6 Arrival/Departure card. You are looking at the departure part of the card - the arrival part was retained by immigration when you last entered the country.

When you return from the UK you will be given a new arrival/departure card to complete.

Yes it will run Feb to Feb.

You can renew your passport without returning to the UK.

UK Passports can be renewed 9 months before expiry without any loss of validity.

Up to 9 months will be added to your new passport, so you could have replaced it in May this year and received a full 12 month extension in July until July 2018.

Insert re-entry permit number in the Visa number section.

Once you have arrived safely back in LOS with your brand new passport, you will need to take it along to your local immigration office along with the old one (plus copies of both) to have a stamps transfer recorded in it. For this purpose they will probably ask for a suitable letter from the British Embassy which the With-It Tower Mob normally provide to those renewing their passports here in LOS as a matter of course. In your case I would suggest that you ask the Embassy as to how you can go about obtaining this letter by emailing them at the address given in their Important Notice at

EDIT: There is also a form which you will need to complete - the penultimate one ("Transfer Stamps To A New Passport") downloadable from post #3 in this pinned thread:-

I entered Thailand with a new U.K. passport in November 2016. I am on an Extension of Stay based on Retirement.

After consulting a colleague the Immigration Officer at Bangkok Airport gave me a permission to stay for 7 days and told me to go to my local Immigration office (Hua Hin) to get my extension of stay transferred to my new passport.

I had previously contacted the British Embassy in Bangkok and they emailed me a letter to print off and hand to the Immigration office.

I took this letter to the Hua Hin Immigration office and all was fine - they charged me 500 baht (no receipt).

I understand a lot of Immigration offices do not charge.

It would be of interest to many if you would scan and post a picture of this seven day stamp you claim to have received,

Did you have both passports on arrival - the old one with your existing extension based on retirement with a re-entry permit?

If so, it would appear that Airport Immigration is trying to avoid doing permission-of-stay  transfers on arrivals, though they often do them for new-passports (issued in Thailand) upon departure.  I would guess the "7 days" is to encourage the traveler to go to the immigration-office sooner rather than later, to get the stamp-transfer done.

They don't have to do any transfer on entry if a person shows both passports. Just do an entry stamp in the new passport.

what a great racket they have ! they realize full well that there is no germane grievance process and these visas/extensions are vital to us therefore we wont make trouble about them or the surrounding details

And did Hua Hin formally cancel the 7-day stamp with a suitable annotation in your new passport when you got your extension of stay transferred? If they did not then it seems to me that this 7-day stamp could arguably be construed as having superseded your extension of stay and that you could be in a mega-overstay situation as a result!

Apologies for the late reply. I have attached a copy of my passport page showing my multiple re-entry permit (transferred to my new passport by the Hua Hin Immigration officer on 3rd Nov 2016) valid up until 19 December 2016 (date my current extension of stay at the time was valid until).

As you will see, I was stamped in on 1st Nov 2016 and only given permission to stay until 7th Nov 2016. This stamp was put in by the airport immigration officer on arrival in Thailand. I was told to go to Hua Hin Immigration to get my stamps transferred to my new passport.

As reported in a previous post, when I went to Hua Hin Immigration on 3rd Nov 2016, the immigration officer told me that the immigration officer at the airport had got it wrong. He kept pointing to my original O-A visa in my old passport and at one point implied I had to go back to London and get another visa.

He then said he could sort it for me - think this is why he charged me 500 Baht at the end of my visit (no receipt!).

I have subsequently renewed my extension of stay until 19 December 2017. My (UK) wife accompanied me and did her extension too as my dependant. We were in and out of Immigration in less than 20 mins and sailed through the renewal and have done several 90 Day reports since, so all good!
