Russian woman begging with baby in Bangkok sparks debate amongst Thais online

Photos of a foreign woman begging with her baby in Bangkok have sparked debate on Thai social media.

The photos show the woman, believed to be Russian, trying to sell photos of her baby around the Chatuchak area of Bangkok.

The woman claims she had been left broke and destitute after being dumped by her husband and was trying to raise funds to purchase and plane tickets so she could leave Thailand.

The photos posted on Facebook on Sunday have been shared more than 17,000 times and sparked much debate by Thais commenting online.

Some people came to the defence of the woman questioning how a father could leave their child in that situation.

Others said that it wasn’t the responsibility of Thai people to help the woman and that she should contact her embassy for assistance.

Some commenting had little sympathy for the woman and compared her to other so called ‘beg-packers’ who beg for money or sell souvenirs in order to fund their travelling.

Others questioned if it was legal for foreigners to beg in Thailand and urged an agency to get involved with the woman’s plight, for the sake of her child if nothing else.

One Facebook user named Angkhana Promyat said they had met the woman and had been in contact with the police who were trying to help provide some assistance in the matter.

Sorry, but she must be handed over to her embassy who in turn must either pay for her in Thailand or have her sent back to her homeland....

Try begging as an alien in the streets of some western nation and the same will happen...

Another quality farang who will plainly justify all the hassle at immigration counters towards other farangs on normal visits to the Kingdom...

Embassy's do not and will not pay for tourists to be sent home or pay for her stay here.

That's not quite correct.  Some embassies (US and UK) will provide a loan for repatriation if the foreigner is in danger and requires a flight out for safety reasons, if the foreigner is unable to raise funds for repatriation through their friends and family.  I'm not sure the Russian embassy would provide this service, but agree that she should be provided assistance to get to the Russian embassy to see if there is anything they can do.

I think Thai people and many farangs for that matter has a gut full of those people

who they claim have fallen on hard time and resorted to begging on the streets,

some without a doubt are in real need, while others are nothing more than

a scam artists and ruin it for the one that are genuinely destitute...

I'm not arguing whether it is or isn't the Thai's responsibility but how many tourists or Expats get hit up by a local who portrays themselves as less fortunate making you feel compelled to drop some money in their cup. Then when you don't give them anything all eyes around you thinking you are a Cheap Charlie Falang. What about all the double pricing for foreigners (National parks and tourist attractions) and the 500 baht airport tax (now built into your ticket price). Maybe some of this money should be in a fund for cases like this.

Shame where begging for a living is socially accepted and you can no longer tell the difference between those really in need and those who are scammers.

Deport her easy end of story

I think it is all about who is going to pay. A seat on an airplane equals money. I think this is what the topic is about unless I've missed something.

Hope she doesn't happen to be British then as she will be well and truly <deleted> in both suggestions.

selling pictures of her baby, that's wrong in itself. the ruskie authorities should take some kind of responsibility to get her home for the sake of the child. however, I suspect she is just a scrounging trollop. sorry but just my suspicion.

Ah... depends a whole lot on how backward your country is.

an Australian, in a position as described in the OP, will be repatriated by his / her embassy.

admittedly, it may not be free, but that would be sorted later, and as Australia is a welfare state (?), Despite trying to get payback, the government will probably foot the bill at days end

Never ever ever trust what a Russian says.

Do you know for a fact she is Russian? She can be American for all what we  know. As for trusting, when the US government say anything I dont believe them 99,999999% of the time. Although I believe Americans as a rule is honest.

Better not include Australia. Head over to Sydney and see the amount of beggars in the city from all over the world. And in a country where they fall over with handouts!

If she can't get family or friends back in Russia to help her out, she should go to the Russian embassy. Begging on the street with a baby in a poor country is rock bottom. You have to wonder about her mental state.

The British Embassy wouldn't that's for sure

Google is your friend.

28 UK residents repatriated from Thailand in 2013 ( their passports got confiscated such that they cannot travel without repaying the cost incurred... plus fees)
