Thai students won 34 medals at the Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest 2017 held in Hong Kong from July 15-20.

The students, accompanied by teachers and Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) deputy chief Suchitra Pattanaphum, arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 10pm on Thursday and were warmly welcomed and congratulated by their parents and teachers.

Besides the Suteetorn School's team of four, invited directly by the organisers, Obec sent three other teams to the contest, Obec's Bureau of Educational Innovation Development head Nitwadee Charoenkiatboworn said.

Besides the 34 medals the 16 Thai students pocketed from 19 contest categories, the Suteetorn School team also won the cultural performance award, she said.

The contest brought together 36 teams from Thailand, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Bulgaria, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia, the US, and Australia.

In spite of a govt School rather than due to, probably all went to Kumon or similar on a Sat morning, or maybe genius level then they hardly needed any help from the start. Last time I was at the airport a young Thai girl serving in a shop needed a calculator to add up 35 and 10, and took a while to do that!

I think that's great. It's sometimes unfortunate that students don't graduate from primary school, but high school.

...2 questions....

1)...'Won' or 'were awarded'....???

2)...Did anyone at the 'competition' not walk away with a medal....???

A couple of those boys could pass as university graduates. What are they doing in primary school maths competitions?
