LAMPANG — An accident involving an 18-wheeler truck and a car prompted police in Lampang province to disband one of their traffic checkpoints.

Witnesses said the crash on Monday took place because the truck could not make a stop in time for the checkpoint, located on the downhill slope of the road that runs between Lampang and Prae. A local police chief said Friday they were considering a safer location for the checkpoint.

nice foresight for the original location; takes a crash to make it rub-your-nose-in-it-obvious

We noticed these checkpoints all along the route to Chiang Mai from BKK last time we drove up there.  Almost all of them were unsafe--we usually had little or no warning at all that we were coming to one of them.  They need to re-think the whole thing.

Thinking things through is an alien concept in Thailand. I know of a place in Kalasin where one U-turn has been blocked off (so why build it in the first place???) and another further on is used instead, situated nicely close to a bend so there is a restricted view of oncoming traffic. Sheer genius.

I think the police deliberately try to catch motorists out by the choice of location.

its normally planned (And I use that term very loosely) so that there is no escape or exit for the motorist.  That way they can get maximum revenue (If its one of those type of checkpoints)

In CM they especially target bike riders and there is a well known checkpoint just out of town heading North.  Lots of tourists head that way to go to either Pai or Tiger Kingdom.  Its a right little money spinner....

I bet their idea was to catch people off guard so the bad guys could not slow down or stop or throw stuff away or whatever.  So put the checkpoints around blind corners, on down slopes, etc.
