I never thought I would stoop so low but in the last two years i have gone from black hogging safety boots to old trainers to fashion boots and the soles falling off have rendered them useless.

I have now succomed to flip flops knowing damn well they are dangerous from every aspect.

But now; a compromise is beckoning that still makes us know best.

What do you think?

 I have some motorcycle flip-flops they have a special reinforced upper pad so that it doesn't hurt to upshift.

I once went to a sawmill in Indonesia, where thet were turning all the teak forests they cut down into furniture. They employed 700 odd people.

No one wore shoes. All flip flops. 100 year old huge teak trees, big saw blades, all lifting, moving done by hand.

I was horrified that no one wore safety shoes and asked the managers (Aussie and Canadian), they said when they came they tried to implement safety shoes and their were lots of accidents. Went back to flip flops.

Yeah, but. . .  Insanity to wear these on a motorcycle. I once saw what happened to a guy's feet when he took a tumble off his bike on Koh Samui. an still here the screams -  not just his but those from onlookers appalled at his mashed-up plates of meat.

I saw a young bloke in Myanmar welding bare foot and asked him where his footwear was.

He pointed to his shoes about 3 metres away.

No way was he getting welding slag on his new Nikes.

Completely understandable.

Of course its all tongue in cheek.

Personally in all my years on building sites I had more "accidents" with a hard hat on.

Walking into scaffold ledgers its amazing how often you think it wouldnt have happened if my hat wasnt 25mm higher.

and site tradesmen, if i logged all the accidents ever, the most common by far was a wood splinter in fingers.

safety gear is more of a hazard than a help so often

When welding in flip flops or bare feet, you develop a sensitivity to what drops on your feet. You can tell right away if it is nothing or you need to shake it off before yo get burned. You got a second or two before it starts to hurt, Usually enough time.
